Sleeping (dreaming/nightmares)
« on: February 08, 2006, 07:01:29 PM »
Well I don't know if this Idea has already been requested, but I always found it odd that Noone on Layonara seems to sleep longer than 30 seconds (like 8 minutes IC I think...) and that's just during rests. Here is how my Idea would work:

Sleep: Well in the emote wand selection (or by clicking on a bed possably, this might even be more beneficial than sleeping on the floor) you might select "Sleep". The player will need to sleep once (for 8 game hours per day or else his WIS (ability to detect or hear) and STR would decrease by 1, they would continue to decrease every day they forget.

Dreaming/Nightmares: Well I think it would be fun to talk about dreams or nightmares when you woke up. Also who whole want to spend 28 minutes staring at a black screen?! The solution is to roll a d4 die and 1-3 get youi into a dream and 4 gets you into a nightmare. The other people who are asleep will also land in "Dreamland" and that way you can continue to RP and not be adventuring solo on floating mountains or whatever. Don't we all say "Hey, I saw you in my dream last night!" anyways? Of caurse you cant act as though you were actually in the same dream, but you can act as though it was coincidence that you shared a similar dream. Nightmares would work quite the same way, only in lands of horror. In Dreams or Nightmares you cant die and are instead woken up in "real life" (now this is getting confusing, heh) making it actually still an inconvinience to die in a dream, since it would be 1-2 IC hours before you can go back to sleep, and back to "Dreamland".

Body: So does your body in the "outside world" simply disappear when you get teleported to the dream world? Well you could make a copy of the players exact apperance (like in NWN HotU Chapter 1, The Hall of Mirrors, one of the Southern Mirrors makes a copy of you, armor, stats and all I think...) and make them appear to be sleeping, clicking on them, attacking them, or casting a spell like Horzekiels Boom (if thats how it's spelled and called, I usually dont play as a spellslinger, at least not with this spell) Great Thunderclap, Wail of the Banshee (saved of caurse... dead if they fail the save) will wake them up (unless they canst silence on themselves before sleeping). This would make Bloodstones nightraids actually far harder to fend off, if they arnt already.. heh... also it would end that annoying scene where everone is perpetually not tired.

Elves: well they have Sleeplessness... so I have no Idea how to do this... I guess they wouldn't need sleep but they couldif they wanted...

I think its a pretty good Idea and it would enormously enhance RP, and add depth, and once more, night raids would be more interesting.

Thanks!

Interesting ideas, however I'm not sure we want to be implementing any significant new systems at this time. What you're suggesting involves a fair amount of work, and while it may be interesting, it may also be annoying to some. One of the many things we have to balance is the "fun" factor.
Requiring sleep for 8 game hours/game day means characters would have to sit idle for pretty long periods of time, and for those who may only have 2-3 RL hours of play time on any given day, this is a serious handicap and would completely kill the fun of the game. Something like this would drive players away at an alarming rate, and I'm pretty sure we don't want to do that.

Alright, good point, I never thought of that, sure, that makes sence.
