Jake Saltpetre - Captains Log

Hunt Day, Junar 13 1397

I've lost me eye, me ship, me crew, and me wench.  But I count me blessings that I not fish food.  Me wench decided to play Jack Ketch cause I looked over a beauty elf lass.  She ran me through and cut me eye out for nery a reason.  But I count me blessings.  I've had a lucky escape and a second chance at life.  Plus that fiesty little elf lass Cat (Catalina Seregon) is fairly easy on the good eye.  I was saved a meeting with Davey Jones Locker by Cat.  Turns out she is a priestess of Mist which was a lucky break.

We washed up at the feet of some golden dragon.  Blimey he was a big one!  Asked me to save the world or some hornswaggle.  I told him I'd help him out and he sent me to Hlint.

Hlint is a landlocked town.  The landlubbers don't know their fore from their arf.  But their is a bit of work to be had.  Me beauty Cat and I skewered a blimey large bildge rat of the local tax lass.

Me rapier work is a bit rusty since I lost the ship.  I'm Jack Tar till I brush up on me skills.

I’ve been landlocked for many endless months, which have draggged into years.  I‘am trying to save up enough booty to weigh anchor.  Harrgh!  Tis a terrible place Hlint.  Tis only me beauty Cat make it bearable.  I finally saved up enough coin for a berth on a passenger ship to Point Harbour.  I sailed with Captain Casper, ne’er been a finer privateer, but a right mean old Sea Dog.  He got himself a government licence these days running the passenger route between Port Hampshire and Point Harbour.  He were happy to rub me nose in the loss of me ship and me eye.  We spliced the mainbrace and a laugh at the old days.  I remember when I tried to overhaul his Corsair, he slipped away into Mistone water the sly seadog.

T’was a terrible monster of a women, Karana, on the ship into point harbour.  Looks like she’s not been long out of the Isles, still a barbarian that one no matter what she bellows about.  I’ll be staying well out of the way of her Axe.  Harr!  I’m glad I left the Isles and me fishing village as a lad.  I could have been married to a monster like that.   Arrgh!  I do miss the pleasant features of Jessica, even if she had the ‘art of a witch.

Twas admiring the view in the Freelancer, mighty fine barmaids they have, when an nasty seadog walked in.  I knew him, or his type: a pirate, slaver and around evil bastard.  Don’t know how he managed a berth on Captain Galray’s Jolly Roger.  He claimed to have been the only survivor from the crew.  His ship sunk by a demon fleet.  If one bilge rat survived over would have too.  He claimed to have been picked up by slavers.  A likely story I though, where were his shackles?  He said he knew the slaver and manged to sail into port a freeman.  He most likely sold his mates into Slavery and Old Galray with them.

It seems the beauty barmaid is running some hornswaggle, messing with Bloods demon fleet!  At the close of the night I figured I’d straighten out the nasty sea dog.  I got him a berth as a swab on Captain Casper’s Privateer.  Took the last of the whiskey off him to make sure he didn’t get drunk and disorderly.  I asked Casper to give him the special treatment on account that he was a scurvy slaver.

The scallywag ran out on Casper and came back to the Freelancer to bloody me nose.  Avast!  He sobered up a might quick!  Complained about getting a beating from Casper, but there was ne’er a mark on him.  Beat me to a pulp near twice!  And I didn’t even swing a punch at the bilge rat.  I hope that one dances Jack-Ketch soon.  He got the local pub crowd on his side with some whine about being sold into slavery.  He didn’t have a mark on him.  Wonder what he did to get Casper so riled?  Casper sent his men in to find the scallywag.  Except a scuffle broke out with blades!  That mountain of a woman Karana went down to the sailors blades.  I ran them through with me rapier.  I probably saved the ugly wenches life.  Ne’er a word of thanks for Old Jakey, just more pointing the finger of blame.  With the death of Captain Caspers men that barmaid will be in trouble.  The free lancers a rough crowd, but ye can’t kill privateers without some repercussion from the government.

The barmaid came to her senses, she’s told me her name is Lee.  She’s looking to hire me.  Best someone with some deadlights keep an eye on that bidge-rat slaver.  Finally got his name, Haarvard.  I’ll be brushing up on me rapier work.  The sword fight didn’t leave me with a scratch but the brawling left me half dead.

I met a beauty named Kesa the other day.  She was prospecting for copper.  I was searching for a Goblin with a bounty on his head.  Ahh the prospect of some work for me rapier, and booty for me coin pouch.  Kesa, knows a few tricks with her sword.  She has offer to tell me about then, and I'm willin to listen, just to 'ere the sound of 'ere voice.  Fiesty lass.  So I'll be jack-tar for her for a while.  Ne'er thought I'd be sqabbing for a landlubber.  But she is a fine swordswoman.  Perhaps she might even make a good sailor.  Though she'd sink like a stone in the heavy armour she wears.  She gave me some heavy armour and a heavier sheild.  Not really me style, even after I got the local washerwench to add a few silks to it.  Ah well when on land ye do as the land lubbers.  If I could only get me footwork back then I wouldn't need this tin can suit.  As soon as I do I'll be dumping this overboard.  Har! Better not tell Kesa or she might run me through.

Saw the brute Karana again.  I started the cogs turning in her lumbering mind.  Perhaps she will see straight after all.  Blimey!  I wouldn't want her bust as a bowhead!

Arrgh! I be getting me ship back.  Spoke to Captain Set about some work.  Looks like I'll be sailing again.  I'll be following the trade routes.  Captain Set gave me some coins to loosen some lips and find me a crew.  Me best bet would be to win back Jessica's Heart.  I'll start in Lorindar, doubt I'll find anything there.  Then to Hurm to check the shipyards.  There been a mightly lot of activity going on near Hurm.  Building lots of fast rigs they are.  I wonder if Jessica is involved?  It will be good to see me old crew.  Bet I'll give em a shock, comming back from Davey Jones locker.

A toast to Lady Doom.

I've found me a Bosun.  Hired that ugly brute Karana for the job.  Figured if she can scare me pants brown, she will do just fine keeping me old crew in line.  She wants 500 coins for the mission and a double share of the loot.  If she doesn't pull her considerable weight, she'll be swimming for home.  She looks like a strong swimmer.

I have been doing some travelling in the last few weeks.  I visited Ravens Watch and me old haunts there.  I left a message with Frozen Pete to arrange a meeting with Jessica.  Arrgh! I doubt she expect Old Jake to turn up to that meeting.  Will be good to see me crew again.  And me heart misses me beauty Jessica.

Then I was off the Hurn to visit the shipyards.  Didn't find anything I liked, but I'm sure there are ships being built somewhere nearby.  Just got to make contact with me old friends.  Left a meeting request with Red Bear with an old fence of mine.  Told em I was looking for work.

Arrgh!  What a typhoon.  Twas visiting Captain Set at the Freelancer to let him know what the jig was.  Brought me new Bosun and Jack-O-Coin ta meet him.  There was some nasty rabble listening in on our conversation and I couldn't get a moments privacy.  Sat down to have me supper and I was cut down from behind.  Jack-O-Coin will get a double share fer bringing me back from the dead.  The Bosun didn't do much to help me, wonder if she has an eye on the Captaincy?  She'll be passing one of her shares to the Bosun I be thinking.

Figured we best get on with buying our ship and getting some work with Red Bear.  Arrgh the pirates cove inn in Hurm is a charming place.  But seems like Captain Set's friends ran into some trouble with pirates while we inside.  Spotted Marcouth and the Captain of the Trueflight (an angel with the devils tongue) comming out of a private room.  I though Captain Set was going to get us hired working fer them.  Instead he tried to do a deal.   All the while they kept loading their ships with supplies.  Bound for Karthy I wager, there was a fair load of supplies and arrows onboard.  Best we hold up those ship from shipping!

Avast!  Well at least me rapier works improving.

“Arr, I’ll have these windows just the way miss Lee likes them” Longtooth mutters to himself. As he removes the dust from the front windows of the Freelancer tavern he peers out into the harbour at the ship coming into dock. It’s a mean looking mizenmast frigate built for speed and battle. Another, similar ship has dropped anchor out in the bay. He looks again at the closer ship, the name has been deliberately covered by a white cloth, but he still recognises it, a cold realization of doom grips him. “That’s Marcouth’s Ship!”. A warm puddle of yellow liquid forms around his feet, as the fear takes control of his bodily functions. The recently hired janitor flees for the backrooms, leaving the windows half cleaned and a dubious fluid on the otherwise polished floors.

A well dressed figure in brightly coloured silks strides down the gangplank of the docked ship with a sailors gait, as departs he barks clear order the crew, he is obviously the Captain. The figure gazes over the dock with as single piercing blue eye and strides directly towards the freelancers’ tavern. He is joined by the second boat Captain who arrives by longboat. The second man moves with the crisp precision of a military captain. Together with a small escort of bodyguards, including a large axe-toting woman, they arrive at the Freelancers tavern. They head directly to Seteece’s office.

“Arrh, Captain Set, I have a ship fer yer, and news on the alliance with Red-Bear” Jake declares to Seteece.
“This here is me old friend Captain Han-Wai, formally of the Rodlem Navy, now serving under Red-Bear” Jake continues.
“Firstly ye freelancers got ye self a new trading partner, Red-Line shipping company, under the directorship of Red-Bear. Red-Line shipping will be the carrier for all goods shipped by the Freelancers. Guaranteeing delivery of all goods, and offering aid in recovering the previously lost shipment of goods. Further, he has offered his fleet as yer navy in the war against Blood. In return the Freelancers will sell goods provided by Red-Bear through their shop fronts, no questions asked. Red Bear has kindly offer ye a 25 percent cut of all his goods sold through ye stores. Furthermore the Freelancers are to assist Red-Bear in the removal of the slave-trade operating out of Sauradia after the war with blood is finished. Finally he has offered to sell yer a frigate. It seems he had to remove one of his Captains, Marcouth for an offence punishable by death; slavery.”
Jake grins wickedly.
“Yer can tell the piss-smelling bilge-rat Longtooth that he no longer has a contract on his head. Well I think I covered everything. Yer barmaid will have any details I missed. Yer might want ter give ‘er some shore-leave, as she did a fine job but appears to be falling apart at the seams. Han-Wai, is here to collect payment fer the ship. As agreed, I’ll be keeping the ship as payment fer me work here. Han-Wai and I will set about finding yer lost shipment and the information yer were after.”
Jake seems happier and more energetic then their previous meeting.
“The Bosun though to call her the ‘Freelancers Bargin’, but I think me new ship will be the ‘Elven Arrow’”

Jake sits in the Captains cabin aboard the Elven Arrow, which is currently in Dock in Point Harbour.  The maintenance of the ship is going smoothly as the skeleton crew go about their chores of Caulking and Cleaning.

A freshly drawn map sits infront of him.  On it is a small island just outside the forsaken islands ring.  Marked on the island is a note and an insert; “The Hideout of Ghant Vodoun”.  The insert describes a cave system deep within the interior of the Island.  Sitting on the map is a skull of a half-ogre and a ruby ring.

Jake opens his log book and writes.
[/yellow]

Tis been a good year fer adventure.  I have part of the treasure of the legendary half-orc pirate Ghant Vodoun.

Twas working fer the RedBear again and with me beauty Liselle Arcanbow.   I picked up a likely bunch of lubbers in Hurm.  They be a horrible set of scum, a dogboy, a black robed mage and his swordsman crony, Arkolio the rogue, the half-gaint Pig, and the lovely Akki,

Ter reach the Island of Vodoun’s hideout we had ter sail deathly close ter the Forsaken Islands.  Twas not entirely unexpected ter be beset by the spirits of the dead.  We lost a few crew overboard as they were dragged screaming into the Mist.  The firey enchantment on me rapier did the trick, reducing the ghosts ter goop in a few thrusts.

The island was overrun by Pygmies, deadly with the bow, and poison.  They killed a few of the shore party, but no great losses.  We reached the entrance ter Vodoun’s lair, at which point the mage died in a puff of deadly poison.   The dogboy and the lovely Akki deserted us as the place got more deadly, disappearing back into the Jungle.

Inside were a series of fiendish traps, deadly spider, choking vines and ghastly undead.  Fortunately Arkolio found and triggered the traps, Pig and Liselle were handy fer the brawling adding support ter me rapier.

We reached the grave of Vodoun burnt by fireballs, lighting, beaten, choked and poisoned.  The grave posed a tricky riddle and deadly trap.  I used this ter me advantage.  The gaze of Vodoun smote me ter near death.  Liselle came running ter gather me in her arms, and I spend a few moment looking into that fierce gaze made suddenly tenders.  Arrgh it was a beautiful moment.

Vodoun it seems was back from the grave as undead.  Not a moments rest and me rapier was called fer again.  He was send ter rest permanently this time.

We collected a ruby ring, a ruby necklace and greatsword from his treasure chest.  Liselle secured a mysterious box fer the RedBear.  I wonder what was within.

Jake Saltpetre, Ex-Captain.
Wedlar, Novlar 18, 1411
[yellow]
Jake approaches the Elven Arrow, which is once again in Dock under maintenance in Point Harbour after a light skirmishes with a vessel bearing a Silver Crescent banner.

“Sorry Sir this is Private Property” commands a burly guard on the gangway.

“Blasted ye lubber, yar blocking the gangplank ter me ship, the Elven Arrow” growls Jake as he gestures to the ship.  A small man in neat business attire who was engaged in hosting a new banner on the main mast turns and approaches the commotion.

“Good day, you must be Mr Saltpetre” the man notes, with a smile.

“Aye, I be Captain Saltpetre” replies Jake peering as a strange crewman hoists a new flag up the main mast.

“Yes, well I’m here to inform you that your services as Captain are no longer required” the businessman continues.  “I represent the Freelancer Corporation, and have the pleasure to inform you that we are giving you a very generous settlement.”

“But the Elven Arrow is me ship!  I worked for years ter pay it off, I own it” retorts Jake.

“Actually, this ship is the Pheonix Rising.  Your contract states that, ‘services rendered for a period of two years on the agreed vessel, with payment for services being the agreed vessel, or similar vessel.  At any point in time the services may be brought out in true coin for the value of said vessel.  Ownership of said vessel remains the property of the Freelancers during the term of service, and in case of a buy out’.   If you had bothered to read the contract thoroughly you would not be surprised by this.  It clearly states that we can buy you out at any time and that time is now”
The man pulls out an envelope with a parchment inside.

“Here is a bank-note with a nice sum, the current market value for this ship as independently priced by the World Bank of Layonara.  You can cash this at any branch of the World Bank.”

“But ye can’t buy a mizenmast frigate, like this, this is Marcouth's old ship, she be a classic.” appeals Jake.

“That’s not my problem; it’s all in the contract” the man replies, with a bored look.

“Where are me crew?” Jake says looking for support if he is going to retake the ship.

“They are in the Freelancers Tavern, enjoying a complementary drink” he smiles as he puts Jakes final piece in check.  He hands Jake the envelope and small yellow piece of parchment and comments “Here take this; you look like you need a drink”.  Jake looks down at the parchment, it is for a complementary drink at the Freelancers Tavern.

Jake Salpetre, previously Captain of the Elven Arrow, stomps off to the tavern with a plan to get very, very, drunk.

{Quest: Escape and Capture, Part I and Part II, pirate series by Dezza}
[yellow]
Jake sits in a private room, in the Pirate Cove inn in Hurm.   He is surround by the luxuries of riches, expended on well paying customers, yet his face seems drawn, and his gaze inward. On the table in front of him is a freshly drawn map.  It marks the location of the Silver Crescent Slavers main hide out, a remote island, just south of Molten Island.  The insert shows some details of this remote island, including a bay where the TrueFlight was found.  [/yellow]

It started as I was waiting in Hurm for Lissele and the Trueflight to come into port.  There had been reports of clashes with the Silver Crescent Slavers.  I knew in me old bones something was wrong.  Instead of the Trueflight two other ships came into port, the Soulreaper and the Seareaver; captained by the Lion and Kayid respectively.

Liselle had been captured and the Sea Witch Tikkri had escaped.  Two boat loads of mercenaries were sent forth to recapture the Tikkri and free Liselle from the heart of the slavers strong hold.  To rescue my love I joined the second boat headed for the slavers hideout, on a remote island south of the Molten Island.

The slavers harassed our passage, but their ships and lizard man crew was no match for the freeblade mercenaries that Redbear had hired.  After an intense sea battle we reach the slavers main base.  It was a small city, bustling with all the activities or slaves and slavers from around the world.  Here was the heart of the despicable trade in Human, Dwarven and Elven flesh.  We manage to arrive by longboat into the main harbor, unnoticed amongst the hundreds of other mercenaries and sailors.  It seemed that the place was run by beholders.  One such beast blocked our passage deeper into the island.  A bribe of gold and jewels and he let us past.

I saw some despicable acts of cruelty exhibited there.  Small children used as manual labor.  The mercenaries that made up our group quickly became separated, and disorganized.  Finally we encountered a group of lizardman within sight of the trueflight.  Battle ensued.  The lizardmen we dispatched easily enough, but I fell to a counter ambush of Black River Pirates.

I awoke stripped and bound in a cell.  Almost all the mercenaries had been captured or killed. In horror I watched as a Demon from the darkness nightmares appeared to torment us.  It planned to kill us and revive us many times using its unholy magic’s.  I recall hearing the voice of the Sea Witch; she may have referred to the Demon as Zithgarlock.  But my mind was hazy and my senses drugged.  I tried to remove another of the captives bonds; the swordswoman Annie, sensing my intention the Demon smote me with unholy magic.  My mind went blank and I passed once more into oblivion.

I awoke once more, this time freed of my bonds, but at the bottom of a deep leech infested pit.  The cloaked figure of Avatar had found and released us.  We were dropped into the pit to be drowned as sea-water flooded the underground cave system.  With our bonds free we made our way through the cave system, groping our way through the darkness.  I made a dagger from a brittle human thigh bone.  With this crude and grizzly instrument we fought our way past mushrooms and giant leeches.  The water continued to rise around use, first it was but a puddle around our ankles, then a swift flowing current around our knees, then at waist height.

In the darkness I found the source of the water.  Large pipes had been installed to allow sea water to fill the cave system as the tide rose.  One of the pipes was not filling.  As we treaded water up to our necks we clambered into the open pipe.  The finally we were swimming in open water.  The mercenaries were free, we washed up on a beach not far from the bay where the Trueflight was anchored.

The sailors of Captain Kayid had found the TrueFlight and were fighting a desperate battle against the Slavers to launch her into the water.  Arkolio who had managed to avoid capture by craven self preservation, told me my love Liselle was alive and aboard the TrueFlight.  I ran and boarded the TrueFlight.  Some of the mercenaries decided to stay behind and look for their equipment.  We set sail with the slavers giving us a hostile departure, leaving behind Annie, Ireth, Aiden and Rodlin.  Once aboard I found that Liselle was indeed whole and had recovered and stored the missing equipment in her cabin.  I took time to reacquaint myself with my favorite cloak and rapier.

Liselle was not as joyous as I expect to see me.  I suppose torture could do that to a soul.  I find it strange that she wasn’t kept in the same cells as us.   Most likely she was kept in a more secure facility as a highly valuable prisoner.  Still I must find out how she escaped, and managed to secure all our equipment!  She is a great woman, yet to escape unaided from the heart of a Demon’s fortress this truly is a remarkable tale that I must hear.
[yellow]
Jake sits uneasy in his luxurious room; his unwritten worries more telling then his journal logs.  He suspects that his beloved Liselle Arcanebow may have turned.  Something is not right.  She told him that she never broke under the terrible torture, and revealed little of Redbears plans, and did not disclose the location of his secret hideout.  Perhaps she spoke the truth, but words she spoke did not explain her miraculous escape.  Something smells rotten, and it isn't the fish.

The Rescue
{Quest: Escape, Capture and Rescue}

Success!  The captured free-blades are once again free.  Weeks of planning in closeted rooms, and the plan succeeded.  Once again was behind the helm of me old ship.  The rescue was carefully hidden within the guide of a normally shipping run for the Pheonix Rising.  I had prepared two sets of rigging ter change her profile on the water line.  I picked up a powerful crew of freeblades at a rendezvous location in the Bay of Carosca.  We sailed hidden by magic to Onregado.  The Freeblades cut a path of destruction through the slavers camps.   From the ship I tracked their progress from the raising palls of smoke. I kept the ship hidden, though we were assaulted by ghosts and undead sailors.  24 hours later I picked them up fighting a fierce retreat out of the slaver camp.  They had taken several casualties, but they carried the bodies and the prisoners out of slaver territory.  We may haste for North Point having given the Silver Crescent a bloodied nose; the slavers non-the wiser for my involvement.

The Eye of the Deep
{Quest: A Pirate Series Quest by Dezza}

Jake stares at the lump of molten gold in his hand that was until recently one of the most powerful artefacts in the land, the Eye of the Deep.  Jake writes:

There is a superstition among sailors that should you see the Eye of The Grey Delver then you know that your life is coming to an end; as the Eye is the last thing you see before the monster of the deep sweeps you into its maw.  The legend of the Pirate King Ghant Vodoon includes reference to the pirate hunting and slaying a Grey Delver.  According to the tale he cut the eye out and through tribal vuju magics used it to create an amulet of power; the Eye of the Deep.

We were to acquire the Eye of the Deep from the lair of Ghant Vodoon.  Han Wai recruited a crew of mercenaries for the job.   The artefact was to go to Savier Morgensen, Regnant of Hurm; a bribe from the Red Bear to seal the alliance between Hurm and Redline shipping.

The motley crew of freeblades that Han Wai collected were powerful, destructive and incohesive.  It is no surprise then that they destroyed the precious artefact.  Now the alliance teeters on the brink.

Jake smiles to himself, and then continues to write in his journal.

In time of chaos the blessings of the Lady are the strongest.  With luck I may still be able to salvage something from this storm wreckage.

Lansport

The alliance between Red Bear and Hurm is made.  The Bear is now admiral of Hurm.  Tis a busy place now, with the rebuilding of the fleet and the reforming of the navy.  I've been considering buying meself a commission there.

http://www.layonara.com/rumour-has/116191-admiral-hurm.html

In the meantime I have some fishing to do, Lansport is the perfect place.  The tavern is full of old fishermen telling tales of the biggest catch they have found.  It seems like a quiet little town on the surface but its waiting for the storm to arrive.

The fisher-folk follow me Lady Doom.  I have heard them tell tales of the Gray Delver, of the terrible creatures of the deep.  Not far below the town is a hidden shrine to the Mother Ocean.  The sea elves are a peaceful lot, good of heart but lacking the spirit the fisher-folk.   The war between Me Lady Doom and the Mother Ocean is ancient.  The sea may be calm now, but it is only a matter of time before the squall arrives.

I have found a disrepaired old fishing boat, barely bigger then a dingy, but deep enough of keel for the open ocean.  She will be me home till I have her repaired.  I told the locals I intend to do some fishing here.  They listen to me tales of the sea, and think that I be a daft old sailor.

I be after bigger fish.
