Orienteering: New Player Welcome Event
« on: April 07, 2006, 12:57:33 PM »
You notice a fresh sheet of parchment carefully nailed to the wall of the Wild Surge Inn. In remarkably clear writing, it reads: Ifion Witseeker, the 11th best known half-elven bard in all of Northern Mistone, is proud to present his impending tour schedule.  Wild Surge Inn ~~ Hlint  Caring Hope Inn ~~ Fort Hope  Scamp's Mug ~~ Port Hampshire  The Freelancer ~~ Point Harbor (weather and tides permitting)   You can travel with the bard and attend all performances for a mere 500 pieces of gold, payable in advance.   Below the sign proper, in smaller print, is written:  Currently seeking musicians to perform with my supporting band, "The Hickory Chimes." Training and musical instrument will be provided. Be at the Wild Surge Inn this coming Tunar evening. The most skilled and dynamic among you will be selected for this unique bardic odyssey. Pay to be negotiated.  ////////////////////////// This is an event specifically for players new to the server, part of "Orienteering", a series of player run "welcome" events  Tuesday April 11 7 pm PDT / 02:00 Wed April 12 GMT  Please sign up using this Calendar Event   For this event to meet its objectives, the following draconian ground rules are necessary:  Levels 1-6 only please Party Size Limit: 6 Max (priority is signed-up, then roleplay, then dicebag, party size has never been a problem so far) No running (except from monsters) There will be a "mandatory role-play period" at the beginning and possibly during at least one "tavern intermission" Please arrive with arrows/bolts, food, water, potions, flint, tinder or whatever you need to last the trip The goal is for everyone to survive the outing, so patience, restraint, and caution will be necessary (At least one person has died on each of these so far, and in most cases, it could have been avoided)  This IS: A chance to see a little more of Mistone and learn how to move safely between Hlint and the wide, wide world An opportunity to ask in-character questions about world events and locations, NPC quests, where to find CNR, whatever A good place to ask in-character those questions people on the forums tell you to "ask someone in-game" A great time to trade crafting items and resources with people who can't use items better than the ones you can make A setting in which to meet people to go adventuring with later An acceptable time to use OOC tells to ask questions about the more frustrating aspects of the game's mechanics (eg I just can't get my character to fish ?! )  This is NOT: A GM run event (which means no GM granted XPs) Run by a player with extensive knowledge of all worldwide happenings An opportunity to "kite" or "draft" behind a high level tank character, soaking up XPs for fast leveling A chance to quickly group up and go 'hunting/bashing'

// No, this is not for bards only. Anyone of any class is welcome to "Chime" in. Why? Because the worse you sound, the better I'll look. * wink *

If this doesn't sound like something your character would do, think of a different reason to come along. We could use mages for magical special effects, fighters for protection and to carry gear, rogues could juggle? Use your imagination.

Ifion sat in the Wild Surge, tuning the strings on his mandolin. He remarked to himself, "I do hope I'm able to hire some protection. I'd like to take the shortcut through the middle of Mistone, rather than go all the way to Fort Llast. But the Sielwood is no place for me alone."

He slowly plucked the instrument, checking that it was once more in tune. His songs, nice and short, were almost ready. "No matter," he thought to himself, "The journey is its own reward."

*a young elf in blue robes sits down at Ifion's table*

*smiling, she says* I'm sure more people would be interested if you skipped the fee... Isn't the opportunity to perform more important the gold?

*a Gruff looking dwarf approaches and chimes in* Aye , I have reason to accompany you, I seek a temple of Vorax and have lost me way, I cannot pay the fee in coins. I could aid with blessing given unto me from the Father of Battle.

( brand new to the server my Fiance' and I would like to accompany you...she still needs to submit a character concept but will likely be playing a druid, the 500 coins is more than my starting coin or hers as well I would assume ... )

*Owen sits down and reads the note posted by Ifion*

Hmm.  Protection eh?  I bet I could get Iradril to come along and maybe even Tha.  Of course, there is no need for more protection than myself, but the more the merrier I say.

*Owen stands up and adds his name to the list of travelers*

While stopping off at the Wild Surge for a quick drink, Ifion notices the comments added to his notice.  After a good, long chuckle, he mutters "Even I don't have 500 gold for this kind of dalliance. Only a fool would pay that, and I don't travel with fools. Entertain them? Of course. And the show would be worth it. And if not, well, there's a reason I'm a traveling performer. Best not to stick around in one place. But never would I travel with a fool. By the gods, not on a trip this dangerous. Quite the opposite. "  He carefully corrects the notice to make his intention clearer.  [SIZE=+2] Anyone willing to provide me with valuable services, musician or mercenary or otherwise, will not be required to pay the 500 gold fee. Rather, [yellow]I[/yellow] will pay [yellow]you[/yellow] a fair recompense for services rendered, not to exceed 200 150 gold coins, nor to be less than 50 gold.[/SIZE][/red]
