Make your own quests!

I was just thinking...It would be very complicated to do but I thought of it when I was on holiday last week....

Basically, maybe somehow include a system where you give minor quests to players.
For example...

A level 1 player wanders along, and not sure what to do. And you need some skeleton knuckles.
You somehow tell the player or use an object to make the quest offical and ask them to collect 20 knuckles.
They get rewarded 100 XP and some gold.

It's just to make the world more spontanious, I know we have a fantastic group of GMs who make quests but I mean for the new players/low level players. They have the NPC ones, which are great but what if you make a new character - You still have a small idea what will happen...

I hope I'm making sense! I'll describe more if I can!
Edd.

not that its a bad idea, but it would be abused. Im sure it would be abused. As for something to do, just R, filling th gaps for you char and have fun with other chars. Lvl's will come, dont rush them.

If those quests are also giving XP, the system will surely be abused as LoganGrimnar wrote.

But, without XP... erh... Why not just tell them "Collect 100 skeletons for me and I'll give you 1000 gold"?

that will still be abused. i can kill 100 skelitions in a matter of a minute. so collecting all there gold, and then selling there fingers for another 1000.. ill make alot of coin... with totale safty. If something was to be added id like to see more NPC quests. Anythin else could be explotable.

This is actually something I have thought about for nearly a decade and yeah it is ripe for abuse no doubt. However, after many long years on running the server, watching players, finding/seeing the loop holes I do think something somewhat similar to this could be done. But it would have to be at a controlled level in a controlled way. I do agree that it would sure add a lot to the world and immersion, we would just have to do it right.  I think I have that figured out, but it is not an overly easy system.

Aye, I didn't mean it to be abused, like set limits that you can only do X amount in a day or something...Or you can only give a certain amount of quests to someone per level...

Oh, no, no...

You misunderstood me...

What I meant was that we already have the something-for-money player quests today. "Trade and Market Hall forum" or "in game trading"! :)

Hm... After thinking about it a little more...

Even if we had scripted player quests, it wouldn't be so very bad for the economy (especially if you add a 50% tax or something like that).

Sure... LoganGrimnar would probably be very rich after collecting all those knuckles, but at the same time, the quest-owner (the buyer) would become rather poor... The number of GP in circulation would decrease... :)

And, if one only want to help new characters. Add a way to set a "maximum level" limit! ;)

Or maybe if there was a way, just make it so that the quests given get harder depending on your level, and to stop high levels from helping the new characters so much make the quests so that the difficulty is changed depending on the highest level member in the party or base it on some sort of average level in the party or something?, that way the high level characters wouldn't be given the easy quests and reap the easy awards so easily...

This could conceivably be a two-birds-with-one-stone situation.  Release a general-practice API for simple scripted quests.  Scripters could then send in .erfs with the necessary characters, conversation, scripts and items - and hey presto, Johann and Co. get to have a break, and new NPCs get a chance to shine.  It's a thought, anyway, and it would prevent people from saying "What is the Quartermaster going to do with 40 000 goblin ears?"

I hear he is making a sundress.
And as for the idea, the PC quests for we high level characters, which oddly I've never submitted one for Llu, probably because I don't want to get some tells over 2,500xp, seem to be working well enough. Maybe they should be opened up further to allow for other levels as well?

*looks slightly confused*  What you're suggesting, Philospher, occurs everyday, just not necessarily by Gm's.  In fact, what Weeblie suggested about in-game trading works, but in there are other rewards besides gold and XP.

I, and I know others, make it a habit to "run a quest" nearly everytime I'm in-game.  and I'm not a GM.  Nor are most of my "quests" posted on the player calendar because they are nearly always based around spontanious events.  Cole's "apprenticeship program" is a good example of this.  New fighter-type players/characters find out about Cole in some form or fashion and seek him out for training.  In return he offers a task-oriented curricullum, guiding and explaining the importance of each situation, experience, etc. The schedule is as they encounter Cole in-game.

There are hoards of things to do, and if you advertise yourself in-game with some skill or another, someone who needs said skill will pick you up and off you go on an adventure.  A quest.

I dunno, it just seems to me that we don't need the Gm's to handle a bunch of spontaneous whatever, when we as players can do that quite on our own.
