Question about ears.
« on: April 27, 2006, 02:02:02 PM »
I have a question about ears.

What kind off ears are there in-game? I mean What kind off languages can a character know?
And is there A language of the dead? Might be usefull for a character I'm creating.

There are I think 18 language ears available in-game. Each primary mortal race (elves, dwarves, halflings, etc.) has its own language, except humans who get Common like everyone else. Some subraces have their own language as well, like Sea Elves can speak Underwater. There's also an ear for animal, thieve's cant, sign and a few others that a new character is not likely to know, and which few established characters know.
There is not currently a "language of the dead"...I'm not really sure which language they'd speak, as I would assume if they could speak, they'd speak what they spoke in life.

     Patience :)
Though I just can't figure out what a giant would say except for "FOOD" and "SMASH"...which is not really much basis for a language. ;)

;) Please note that in the layanora handbook, it lists giant as an automatic language for half-giants.  I doubt many of them ever learn another language.

In all seriousness, it is on my list of things to do.

That should be changed, IMO, speaking as someone who plays a half-giant.  "Giant" should only be given to HGs raised by giants, or have spent a considerable time living with them or dealing with them.  The typical half-giant raised by humans should know only "Common", and for most of them (given the INT difficulties), even there they should have some troubles.

It's not like you're born knowing a language... you have to be introduced to it enough to be able to speak and/or understand it.  The same half-giant, if raised as an orphan by a community of halflings, would probably know "Halfling" and maybe "Common" if it was used frequently where he grew up.

Hmmm... now that I think of it... there's a fun charatcer idea for NWN2/Layo3... a HG oprhan raised by halflings.  All of the halfling personality traits, but at 3-4 times the size.  Might be worthwhile just for the comedic relief value...

Oh, I agree with you Faldred.  Mikey should not yet know giantish.  But, (you knew the but was coming, right?) the end result of his recent CDQ leaves him in contact with a giant.  Mikey very much wants to learn Giantish at the moment.  I was just pointing out that the rules for learning a new language state that you must learn it from a PC, which cant be done at the moment.  Even more importantly, can a half-giant with less than a 12 adjusted int learn it all if they dont start with it.  Sorta strange that some can and some cant, dont you think?
