Vol II Num III
Seplar 1401
~~ From the Editor ~~
Although events of significance continue to swirl around the Dragoncalled, this writer hears only sparse whispers with few conclusions. I fear our lack of coordination will lead to blood spilled in the wrong battles. I encourage the veterans amongst the Dragon's chosen to get word to me, Bumblebee, of milestones in our cause.
In contrast to that, I welcome whispers about milestones in other regards from our disparate community. At least two weddings approach and perhaps some have passed without fanfare. Surely some babies have had the fortune to be born to Dragoncalled parents. Equally sure am I that some of those amongst us have not returned from ventures afield, their final soul strands torn asunder under the gaze of comrades, enemies, or just the gaze of the stars upon high.
Let history record all of these on the pages of The Dragon's Whisper. Time can scrub much clean beneath its patient hand, let us try though to aid the present and preserve the past by marking it down in word.

This issue is one for fireside reading, with several tales of lore followed by Lyle's regular column. The first tale, narrated by Ozymandias, describes some of the details to Bloodstone's arrival. The second is a more obscure bit of lore, shared with us by Andreleth Shadowfeather.
Look for more details on the state of the people in Prantz (formerly Pranzis) in the next issue, due out in a few days. Also, whispers are reaching us regarding the Berylites and we hope to share that in the forthcoming issue as well.

Death, even when one feels the inexorable press of the Soul Mother's gaze, is never expected. Never is it welcome. Always is the lost soul missed by those left behind. It is with much sadness that I share the passing away of Elrend Starfire, the Whisper's head of security. After this sadness then, it is with equal relief that those destined for execution were spared that fate. We, in turn, were spared the grieving. Do you curse or thank the one that spared us this grief? Do you curse or thank the ones that put themselves into such a situation? Let us just be thankful.

Can you imagine a darker time for yourself than to be incapable of making choices? You choose a trade to pursue. You choose to fight or not and when. Will you travel the lands or care for friends or just sit and gossip? Now take those choices away. What if your day's labor was not of your own choosing but of anothers? Go through your day, now, with shackles to your ankles and a whip to your back. Karthy has chosen to bind people of the land into slavery. There in that city slavers sell their frightened wares on the dock. What choices will you make?

An overwhelming sight. That is the only way to describe The Great Library and its row upon row, stack upon stack, of documented history. The deities, the races, the legends, all there. The tower itself standing as if it were a goblet from which one could taste the essence of time and its lore. I admit to drinking deeply from it that day. Oddly, the refreshment did not quench my thirst but only increased it. "Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it." ~~ G. Santayana Let us learn together.

Bumblebee - Thank you, Ortheus for the opportunity to sit down and talk to you. The Toranite faith has been the subject of many rumors and controversy lately. Ortheus - I actually want to thank you, Bumblebee, for letting me clear the air and let the truth be known. Lately there has been a lot of controversy, you are right. I want to assure you that no matter what you may have heard, we are still here and we will remain here. Bumblebee - As long as we are talking controversy, can you explain what happened to stir this trouble up in the first place? Ortheus - *sighs* It started before the fall of Pranzis. There were some among us who, for whatever reason, chose to ignore their vows and oaths to Toran and became concerned only with themselves. I can list many incidents where those who carry the name of Toran exhibited unacceptable behavior. We thought that we had removed those individuals and were moving forward. Bumblebee - Then Pranzis fell... Ortheus - Yes. When Pranzis fell, I was still in the temple. We held out for as long as we could, but at a certain point, we realized that we would not be able to keep Broegar's forces from taking the temple. I got as many of my brothers and sisters out of a secret exit and then closed it and covered it up. The only one who stayed with me was Sherinde. Bumblebee - Why didn’t you leave with the rest of your people? Ortheus - The temple had many artifacts and relics that I did not want to fall into enemy hands. So Sherinde and I hid what we could and then we barricaded ourselves in a room. Eventually, we heard Broegar's forces inside the temple, but they never ventured too far into the lower levels of the temple for some reason. I imagine they had to reinforce the lines where the heroes had tried to protect the city. Bumblebee - *nods* How long were you trapped then? Ortheus - As it happened, my counterpart in the Fort Llast temple, here, had contacted Michaelis Draego to investigate the temple in Pranzis. When he arrived in Pranzis, he was alerted that our people were hiding in the Citadel. They told him what had happened to us and he decided to attempt to rescue us. Apparently, as they were coming to the temple to rescue us, they found it surrounded by Drow that were being led by Navarre. Bumblebee - Who is Navarre? Ortheus - Navarre is...or was, the First. Bumblebee - The First what? Ortheus - No he was The First. The First Paladin in the Toran order. It was Navarre who laid down the code that we live by. He was a hero to all of us. Bumblebee - But he was leading an army of Drow that surrounded your temple? I don’t understand how that could be. Ortheus - Regretfully, Navarre's tomb was raided by those loyal to Baraeon Ca-Duz. They performed some dark ritual and brought him back to reign in terror and lead an army of Drow. They corrupted his mind and turned him against us. It is...it is not something that we were proud of and we kept it hidden for a long time...even from our own. Bumblebee - *nods* That is understandable. But he was there when Michaelis arrived? Ortheus - Yes. He actually confronted Michaelis and offered to let him into the temple. Bumblebee - Why would he do that if he had it surrounded? Ortheus - No one knows the truth, but most people believe that he was so arrogant that he did not fear Michaelis or his friends. Navarre had already sent a group of his Drow into the temple. There was no way in his mind that Michaelis could stop him. I believe differently though. I believe that even in his current mind, Navarre still held some regard for Toran and let Michaelis go because of it. Bumblebee - But why was he there? To get you? Ortheus - No. Navarre was there for the same reason that Michaelis was. Michaelis was there to investigate the temple as I said before, but he also had another reason. The Holy Ankh that stood for so long in our temple in Pranzis was still there. It is a great symbol of our faith and Nathan believed that it could rally us together. Bumblebee - What do you mean rally you together? I understand that your temple was broken, but did your faith fall apart with the building? Ortheus - You could almost say that it did. When Pranzis fell and our temple attacked, the faith split into three groups. There were those of us who wanted to rebuild and help the people of Pranzis and of all Layonara in truth. The fall of Blood has left us all in disarray. There were some of us who felt that the most important thing to be done was to make sure that Justice was done. No matter the cost or crime, Justice was the only way to bring back order. And the rest of us? The rest were left to the side to see who would gain an upper hand. *Ortheus shakes his head and remains silent for several minutes* Bumblebee - I can see that this is hard for you Ortheus. Continue when you are ready. Ortheus - I'm sorry Bumblebee. It's difficult to see everything that you believe start to crumble around you. As I was saying, the faith was split. Nathan was only trying to bring us together when he sent Michaelis to retrieve the Ankh. And Michaelis was successful. However, he had a Rofirein follower transport it back to Fort Llast. And unfortunately, since Navarre did not get his hands on the Ankh, he took out his anger on the temple and destroyed it. Bumblebee - I don’t know that much about the Toran faith, but aren't you and the Rofireinites allies? It is hard for me to tell the difference between you sometimes. Ortheus - Yes we are allies...or were allies. There really was not much of an issue with a Rofireinite bringing the Ankh back here. Maybe not the ideal solution, but it should not have been an issue. However, one of my assistants from the temple decided to voice his opinion of how Michaelis handled the situation. It so happens that the High Justicer, Tormand, was in earshot. He used this opportunity to make a power play and demanded Justice. Bumblebee - Justice? For what Michaelis had done? Ortheus - Yes. Tormand was simply using the situation to fuel his ambition. If he could sway a majority of us to his opinion, he would be able to prosecute his plan to enforce Justice at all cost. He was disillusioned by his ambition and blinded to the consequences of his actions. He put Michaelis on trial. And in the meantime, the Ankh was delivered to Nathan, who kept it hidden. I don’t condone what he did, but with Tormand parading Justice as he was, I suppose I cannot blame him. Bumblebee - So, the Ankh was delivered already? Ortheus - Yes. Yardislan and Ralinda used arcane magic to shrink the Ankh to the size of an amulet. Then Yardislan teleported from the temple and back here to the temple. He delivered the Ankh to Nathan several days before Michaelis returned with me and the other refugees from Pranzis. Bumblebee - I see now. So Nathan had the Ankh, but was afraid to reveal it because of Tormand? Ortheus - Exactly. Tormand was demanding that Justice be done and went so far as to put Michaelis on trial. During the proceedings, it was revealed what Nathan had done. As I said, I don’t condone what he did, but I can understand his intent. Unfortunately for him, he had to atone for his actions. He was banished from the temple. In the midst of that, Judge Moorshan gave Michaelis a choice of either bringing Navarre down or accepting whatever punishment his peers deemed necessary. Michaelis stepped forward and made us all proud by going after the First. Bumblebee - When you say 'bring Navarre down' do you mean kill him or ? Ortheus - Here is where something interesting and wonderful happened. Michaelis was good friends with Nathan and it hit him hard that Nathan was to be banished. He spoke to Nathan one last time before he left to face Navarre. Nathan gave him the holy symbol that he had worn for countless years. He told Michaelis to follow his heart and Toran would listen. Yet, at the same time, Tormand, the man who just recently had been pushing to punish Michaelis, decided to help him. He handed over a Justicer's Blade. It was obvious that Tormand's intention was to have Michaelis kill Navarre once and for all. Bumblebee - No offense, but I am surprised that this didn’t come to blows. Ortheus - Several times, it nearly did. But as I was saying, Michaelis left to face Navarre. I still don't know every detail, but Michaelis confronted Navarre and by the grace of Toran, convinced him to renounce Baraeon and ask forgiveness from Toran. Bumblebee - So, Michaelis did not have to kill him? Ortheus - Thankfully, no. They traveled back here. This should have been a momentous event because Navarre had returned. Instead it was infamous. Tormand intercepted Michaelis as he entered the temple and took Navarre into custody. His ambition knew no limit! He was going to prosecute Navarre. The First! He even included the Rofirein church in his plan. And they went along with it. Bumblebee - Ok I see now. That is why you said that you were allies. Ortheus - Right. They assisted Tormand with no regard to the consequences. They even tried and executed Navarre. Bumblebee - Wait. I thought that the Baraeon Drow raised him from the dead. Wasn’t he already dead? Ortheus - I was not there so I cannot say exactly what happened. I can tell you what I believe. I believe that when Navarre asked for forgiveness from Toran, Toran accepted him back. However, Navarre was undead. There is no other way to say it. But, I think he may have been as close to life as one can be after what had happened to him. I also firmly believe that in that moment, when he was in the hangman's noose, he fully gave himself over to Toran and gave up the will to live on. Bumblebee - So Navarre was executed. Tormand got his way. So where do you fit in all of this? Ortheus - Tormand returned to Fort Llast, triumphant. He paraded through town with Navarre's body in tow. He was flaunting the First like he was some prize to be displayed. Tormand had lost his way and so had the Justicers that blindly followed him into this situation. I had seen enough at this point. I met him at the top of the stairway to the temple and I stopped him from entering. Bumblebee - You barred the door? That was a bold move wasn't it? Ortheus - It was a bold move. But we had suffered enough and I would not see it go on any longer. I barred the door and told Tormand that he had gone too far. He was no longer welcome in the temple and his authority had been stripped. He and the rest of the Justicers were to remove themselves from the temples as they were no longer under Toran's domain. Bumblebee - I can imagine that this did not sit well with him. Ortheus - No it did not. It very nearly resulted in violence. I had prepared for that though and had the guards escort him away. Michaelis was also there and I believe he helped diffuse some of Tormand's willingness to instigate action. Bumblebee - so, the Justicers are no longer under Toran's domain...Where does that leave them? Where does that leave the rest of the Toranites? Ortheus - I am glad you asked that. For too long I think that Toran has been in the shadow of Rofirein. At best, they were thought of synonymously. What we stand for has not changed. We believe in what is Right. Many times the Law agrees with us. Sometimes it does not. Do we still prosecute under the Law if we do not agree with it or feel that it is Right? Or take for instance a situation where someone broke the Law but in the end, made things better. Do we punish this person? Justice is no longer our concern. We follow what is right. Bumblebee - And the Justicers? Tormand? You didn’t answer that question. Ortheus - I have not seen or heard from Tormand since that day. I fully expect that he is still around. His anger and ambition will prevent him from seeing what he has done. That is not my concern though. My concern is the healing of my faith and the healing of all the people in these times of unrest and uncertainty. Bumblebee - Thank you for your time, Ortheus. I think you have a rough time ahead of you. I wish you luck. Ortheus - Thank you, Bumblebee. The All Watching keep you safe.
