    Hot and/or Cold
    « on: June 30, 2006, 01:47:33 AM »
I have been using common sense to determine it up until now, but with the sky darkened I am wondering a bit just how much the temperature has been affected.

Also, I wouldn't mind seeing some method of letting me know what the temperature is so I can dress appropriately. Doesnt have to be terribly accurate, or any in-game script, though that would be neat. Maybe just a few latitude lines on the map of layonara marked with an average temperature for each season.

I think I should add a bit here. I know there are ALOT of variables. What I am looking for is an average based on a few factors that dont add in things like deserts, we all know deserts are hotter in the day and colder at night, and that mountains are cooler the higher you go, etc.....

I guess what I would like to see is an average based on open, sea level land leaving the rest to us to realize that certain enviromental factors influence the average up or down.

You can get an idea by looking at the terrain of the areas.  To the north, the Barbarian Islands are freezing cold.  To the south, the island of Alibor is covered with steamy swamps and jungles.  Everything between is temperate, which is most of the places people tend to travel.  It would probably be that the northern areas, like Leilon and North Point, are cooler than the southern areas, like Fort Velensk and Lorindar, in the same way that Boston is cooler than Miami, generally.

EDIT:  And check out the month by hovering your cursor over the compass.  That will affect the temperature more than the latitude for most places.

wonder if we can get the cold script added to other places like Berhagens and such. when the "Dark Age" and the minor ice age and all id think it fits.

Well of course Ive been using common sense to figure out where its real cold and real hot. The main thing I was interested in knowing was how the temperature has been affected by the new sky just didnt know where to ask it and got the minor idea of knowing what the temp was by some means at the same time.

As far as the months go different people would get a different idea of the season based on where they live in the real world, however, US based server so Ive been going by US based seasons on Mistone and attempting to adjust based on where the continnents would be on a globe not flat.

But, lately the sky is covered and the season is changing into summer, and mainly I just wanna know how my characters are supposed to be reacting to current temperatures. The idea for a way to see it is just a sidenote, and since I didnt know where to ask the question about temps I lumped it in here.

The thing about the cold script is an interesting question too. If the temp is really affected badly are we going to start seeing places change to snow and use the cold script? Yikes. but neat if so.

The correct answer to this is that pretty much the entire globe is affected by reduced temperatures.  How much? Well, likely 10-20 degrees F (5-11 degrees C) at a minimum and everywhere across the globe.  Climates change at a very slow rate in general, though this one is precipitated by a catastrophic event which blanketed the in a cloud of dust and volcanic ash, thereby blocking out the warming rays of the sun.  Over time, assuming the cloud does not dissipate quickly (and there's no reason to believe it will), the compound effects of the lack of direct sunlight will start to rear their ugly heads....such as shortened and moderately productive growing cycles in equatorial regions, non-existant growing seasons in the moderate lattitudes and potentially ice caps that creep in from the poles.
We are in the early stages of this ice age.  Remember that here on Earth, even volcanic ice ages took a while to get started and a while to recover.  The planet is big....climates do not change over night.  Really, it's cooler everywhere, and it's probably going to get colder still.
As for additional world changes due to the cold...I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Well, and Earth's Ice Ages were caused by climactic shift and/or multiple meteor/volcanic eruptions.  Krakatoa blanketed the skies with ash when it exploded, and resulted in a 10-degree worldwide temperature drop for 10 years - not an ice age.

I've not been to the Barbarian Isles. However, you could always have a "cold script" running, just like the one that does you 1 point of cold damage per minute on NWN:HOTU:Chapter 3 if you don't get near a heat source quick, or wear the appropriate clothing. Similarly, you could have a look at the Sands of Fate modules to see how they implement the thirst / heat effects system in the desert adventure. It's really cool.
