Renaming a warhorse
« on: June 30, 2006, 11:25:26 AM »
I looked in the forums but could not find a way to rename my warhorse. Is it possible to do? If so, can someone enlighten me as to how?

Come now Michaelis. Paladins aren't supposed to get jealous are they?

Paladin's aren't, but nothing says I can't ;)

But seriously, I'm curious about this Q as well.

I can't speak with great authority on this, but I have a strong suspicion that it is not possible.
If my understanding is correct each time you call your warhorse the engine generates a new incidence of a warhorse - in a similar way to a summoning. So, if you were to rename one, the next time you whistled for it the name would have been lost - it being to all intents and purposes, a new creature.

I guess that a function could theoretically be added to the Whistle, that performed a rename function after completing the summoning. However given the small number of paladins of suitable level, I doubt that this would come high on the teams to-do list (which is pretty full *grins* )

Of course, I could be totally wrong ;)

The mechanics of calling the warhorse are correct and the reason why you can't name one already is likely right on as well. Unfortunately that reason also means it probably won't be done in the very near future.

How a paladin calls a warhorse is correct...it's much like a summons rather than a possession. As such, a name doesn't really make sense, as it's not really the same horse every time.
However, having said that, we -could- technically utilize the whistle to remember a name, and when the called horse was created, the name could be given. There's really nothing stopping it, except that it doesn't pass the "makes sense" test, given that they act like summons, not possessions, and would thus not be the same creature each time.

In the game mechanics yes... but I always figured it was like zorro, ya know, he whistles and the horse comes rushing up?

Basically, yep....though that was Zorro's horse and he wasn't a paladin by any stretch.  :)
Anyway, my comment was mostly on whether or not a name could be given (and it could with modifications) but it only makes sense if we treat them like possessions, which we don't. AFAIK, there's no real penalty to the paladin if his warhorse dies somehow. Like summons, a new one will come the next time.
So can we name warhorses? Yes, we can.
Will we name warhorses? Probably not.

Thanks for the replies. Being an old codger, I'm in the AD&D 1.0 & 2.0 mindset.A paladin gets a new warhorse every ten years under those rules (after reaching fourth level). And the horse could die and the paladin would have to wait the ten years to get another one.

Well if Michaelis ever gets a warhorse (around lvl 24), I was going to RP it at least that unless the horse is killed it is the same one every time and give it a name.  The horse tag will still say "Warhorse" or something like that but I'd still RP it having some name.
