Discussion on the name of gold...
« on: October 04, 2006, 11:46:14 AM »
I was just thinking about this after seeing posts here and there on the trade forums.  I see the term "queens gold" or similar terms being used now and again.  And I know there has been a discussion on what gold is or should be called in game.  However, I was wondering, what queen is referred to in the "queen's gold"?  Does it have anything to do with the previous rulers in Pranzis?  (My lore is not the greatest I admit.)  If it is related to the past rulers of Pranzis, wouldn't Lord Broeger have the currency changed? or at least the name changed?  Just curious.

Broegar is probably having his own coin minted as we speak  lol   ;)

He strikes me as one who wouldnt use anyone elses coin... he'd make his own.

What to name it though?  ;)

I figure he'd use True, and just stamp HIS face on it instead of the other Dregarian emperors'.

I believe that the coin should not have a name as there is no rational reason for it to have one. In the medieval times, and Layonara is really close to it, there was no difference what the coin was called or who minted it, because the bearer of value was the metal itself (be it gold or silver) and not the source of power who minted it (Queen, King, Baron etc). So for the average human it will still be a "coin" and the mug stamped on it would not make a difference.

The second arguement against naming the coin is that there is no single currency in Layonara. All the official powers are probably minting their own money. So the Queen, the lost King, mayor merchant towns like Leilon, Hampshire and Lorindar, the elves on Voltrex all have their coins. So if you still want to give the coin a name you will have to figure out many names for each coin and also figure out a way to distinguish them.

My opinion is that a simple "coin" fits a lot better than a artificial name *shrugs*

I'm curious....
has it ever been discussed bringing back the standard D&D Monetary system - ie, copper, silver..etc.?

It would probably be a difficult tast but I'm a huge fan of it.

It's utterly vexing that the Truths of the wicked are greater in sum then the Virtuous, but never more valuable.

Well, as fun as it might be, it'd also be needlessly complicated.  Who'd ever use a copper piece in transactions?  And electrum?  Plus, it'd complicate the banking system as well.  There are implemented coinage systems, but the Powers What Is decided (wisely, I think) to opt for gold-only.

Agreed. Before Trues, I just RPed with platinum coins, heavier gold, and even a mithril coin once, for different denominations of GP.  Now I carry around notes from the bank for X amount of gold.

In this time period I belive a Farmer might see about 300 copper as a years wage

Layonara currency is not the same as D&D currency, each gold coin is worth less than in the standard D&D setting(s). It has to be to reconcile the prices of some mundane goods.

In layo currency I'd put the daily wage of a farmer at 2-3 true a day. Which still doesn't quite reconcile the price of a bottle of ale.. but that price is a compromise between realism and CNR balancing since Brewing is a craft.

Well that does actually make sense... seeing as Farmers tend to be one of the poorer producers
