    Mining & Wood Cutting
    « on: October 20, 2006, 08:31:07 AM »
I play a bard, and i think many of those that do play acharacter is kinda annoyed with the fact that you need extensive weapon training to be able to chop wood or mine... This probably been said before, and been taken up, but id like to add my voice to it... Layonaras crafting system is loads of fun, and i am reluctant totake  martial feat with my character due that it feels wrong for her to have extensive weapon training in "heavy" weapons... and to my point a commoner shouldent need to learn how to wield a katana as a example just to be able to mine...

    So my suggestion is...
All classes can use the light pick, please allow it to be used for mining and wood cutting... just call it light miners pick and light wood cutters axe, light black smiths hammer etc... It will be a handicap to mine and chop wood with a D4 + 1 in miriels case, but atleast i can. ill just be wery bad at it, ewen mages using bulls strength will be bad at it, but they can...

    Thanks /M

This has indeed been said before and I actually know how it feels (playing a cleric so can't mine things/chop wood either).

Previous suggestions have been like, -10 AB, -5 damage and so on. But the end answer has always been a no.

I could dig up the old threads, if you want, to show the old arguments for and against this and the reason of why it has been rejected.

      Weeblie...

What i ment is, the light miners pick that can mine gems, bard, cleric and wizard(i think) can use it... it does a whooping D4 points of damage, im NOT asking for the use of the BIG MINERS PICK, just the little one, and as i understand it all that would need to be done is add a TAG to that little pick item and a propriate name, and people could use it...

I did understand what you meant. :)

But I don't think it would matter how little damage it would do. The answer will most probably still be a no on this (with the same arguments as in the previous threads).

Edit: This is an old thread I found which suggested another "workaround": http://www.layonaraonline.com/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=29418

      And to quote Dorganath:

The classes that cannot wield harvesting tools can burn a feat, if they really want to go that route, or hire someone to harvest for them.  Druids should never take such feats, nor take advantage of such items, as their class weapons are a matter of oaths and dogma, not ability.

I'm seriously unsure why it's so difficult though for such classes to buy that kind of CNR off of others, or work out some kind of trade agreement, to get the things they can't normally get.  I know lots of crafters who have done this, and dare I say, I believe this system was designed with that in mind.

This type of question comes up fairly regularly
Adding to what Weeblie said, part of the issue here is game mechanics, and while I agree that katana skills have no bearing on chopping wood or mining, we're limited in choices as to what mining tools can be.
A "light mining pick" doesn't make any sense for mining ore, either from a conceptual sense or a mechanics sense.  On the latter, ores have DR, and 1d4 can never beat that DR unless strength bonuses come into account.  Similar things could be said about a light axe.  A light smiths hammer doesn't make much sense because metal work is difficult and requires force.
I understand the limitations and the desire to not burn feats to do such things, but nowhere is it written that every character should be able to do any craft without making some adjustments.  Some crafts depend on class, some on alignment, whether the requirement is for being able to equip the tools used or for the spells required or just explicitly required in the recipe itself, and the same goes for gathering CNR.
There's nothing wrong with getting help from others to gather your materials.  My character used to go mining with his sister who is a bard/rogue and could not equip the mining pick.  So he'd mine and they'd split the ores.

I still say there should be a crafting feat.  The crafting feat gives you a weapons proficiency similar to elf weapons proficiency.

Crafting feat: Weapons proficiency heavy pick and wood axe.  Also something else that works good with crafting like +1 to all craft rolls or + 5% to your chance of success.

I just think it would be way cooler to have a special craft feat then taking a martial weapons proficiency.
