After 20 years, I have finally ascended in Nethack.

*sobs a little*

*shakes a fist at the DevTeam*

*pats his lucky blessed wand of polymorph on level 14 that gave him 3 wands of wishing*

Now...  I'm going back to it, perhaps in another 20 years I'll ascend once again.

If you have no idea what I'm so happy about, move along, there's nothing to see here.

What's Nethack?  Is that an old-school MUD like the one I used to play, AVATAR?  I made it to Hero, my roommate Freshman year hit Lord, but we both dropped out before the re-moprh to Titan around when NWN PWs and college girls became an issue of contention.

As I mentioned above, I've been playing it for the past 20 years (I played Hack until I found Nethack) and it's the only game that has replay value for me as it's fun, no matter how many times I've died (10 to 30 tries a year, you do the math) trying to ascend.

Oh, there are 3D clients that even have a soundtrack and sound effects but I prefer the standard x11 graphics.

I've come so close, and failed twice.

Once, I made it to the astral plane with a gaggle of dragon pets, several restore mana potions, and a real effective knack for charming the various priests and acolytes to take care of the three horsemen.  I saunter up to the middle altar and sacrifice the amulet... but due to a complete lack of presense of mind, I got my dieties confused and sacrificed the amulet on the wrong altar.  I believe the score page gave me credit for escaping but not ascending, with the caption "escaped from the dungeon in celestial disgrace".

The other time I made it to the astral plane, I got cornered by "Famine", and was starved to death not more than 50 paces away from the altar.
