Customizing Shields
« on: December 18, 2006, 09:13:43 AM »
Hello, Layonara Brain Trust!

I'm new to Layonara (and loving it), and have no experience with using any of the crafting/customizing options for armor and weapons.  I have the basic crafting certificate and the smith's hammer, some metal dyes, etc.  I've successfully customized a melee weapon using the customizing bench, but can't seem to figure out how to do the same with my shield!

When at the bench without the shield equipped, the bench says, "You don't have armor or a shield equippped."  But when I equip the shield, it says, "You aren't standing near the tool you need to do this."  If I hold the smith's hammer in my other hand, it customizes the hammer!

So what am I doing wrong here?

Thanks, guys!

Julia

Moved to the proper area

First make sure you have purchased a shield crafting kit thingie from the craft vendor

Equip your shield only and stand close to the forge in the customization area

You can click on the forge to bring up the menu or use your radial menu to bring up your crafting skill option and menu

Rule of thumb... the loom for cloth, the tanner's pool for leathers, the forge for metal and the bench for weapons.

sometimes lag interfers so keep trying

While minerva's rule of thumb is good, it seems to me there have been times where I had to try one of the others to get it to work right for whatever item I might want to alter.  Another suggestion, is that there are rings that are normally dropped by the goblins and others that are designed soley to aid in customizing armor and weapons.

What exactly is the "shield crafting kit thingie"?  (Although I greatly appreciate your technical jargon!  ;) )  The craft vendor has various forms for armor available, but I haven't been able to find any craft vendor with any sort of shield crafting "kit."

I've got the recipes and books for both armor and weapons.

I'm trying to customize a copper kite shield.

Thanks, guys!

I believe its on the crafting vendor, just look around at his misc. wares. Costs around 20 gold, you need to have it in your inventory with you shield equiped standing next to the customizing forge to customize. *deep breath*

um just a quick one even though it could be a bug but if you go to the table to change weapons and shields it works everytime but the forge not always

Another suggestion: Walk up to the crafting station of choice (for clothing or weapon customization) Click it, but dont click any options yet, and turn yourself around so your character is facing outward and you can see their face. If you dont do this the customization station usually takes a really strange camera angle.

Ah ha!  For some reasons, I figured out that it would let me do anything I wanted (with sword, shield, etc.) as long as I was also wearing my armor.

Go figure...

Thanks, everybody!
