The planes server - Is it really worth it?
« on: February 20, 2007, 02:20:54 PM »
I keep an eye cast upon the server status page as i go about my day. And I can't help noticing that the planes server is almost NEVER used. Even when it is there only ever appears to be one or two people on it.

I was therefore curious as to how people would feel if it was destroyed and a new server created to act as an over lap for West & Central - catering for levels 9 to 14 for example.

I realise that for whomever has spent hours toiling on the various areas and scripts on the planes server this is un unsettling question and no one like to see their hard work go to waste, so perhaps the planes module could be run on the quest server when its not needed for questing.

I was just curious as to how everyone felt it.

We may consolidate the "Planes" onto the East server and stop using it as such, but the chances of an "overlap" for West are probably pretty slim. I see where you're going with that, but having an overlap is exploitable...and of course I won't say how.
Though I suddenly realize that you may mean this "overlap" server doesn't really run either West or Central but some "inbetweener" areas.
Please clarify a bit, if you don't mind.

I like that idea. Put Alindor and the islands of the south onto it to free up space for more on west and central.
Edit: If nothing else it could help to take some of the load off west since it will be a smaller module

Sorry Dorg what I actually meant was areas that are neither on West or Central at the moment, but where the PC levels on the server are designed such that:  West Server designed for levels 1 to 10 Central Server designed for levels 10 to 20  New Server designed for levels 8 to 12.  Geographically it would be unique (Maybe strip Dragon & Serpent Isle from West along with Krashin, Bastil and Black ice Islands and enlarge the scope of them somewhat ). I suggest maybe add more islands - heck it could be called the Islands Server!  West could then have other areas added to it to take into account that these islands have been removed.  I was merely trying to present an idea to maximise server usage for the many rather the few elite. There will always far more PCs at lower levels than there will be in the elite range. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few!

Actually, that sounds like an amasing idea.

Let's hear it for the Islands server!

Though, of course, this would take a heck of a lot of work.

I have no doubt that it would be a lot of work, but then I don't think Layonara has ever been considered a short term project. It would be nice to give PC's in that critical level 8 to 12 range more possibilities for adventuring locations.

Especially if there was a (relatively) convenient way to travel to the area and a good "assembly point" or "loitering" area (i.e., shops, bank, crafting hall).  That way, PCs in these levels could "hang out" there when in the mood to go adventuring.  Lord knows, Zug would hang around there if/when I had a couple of hours to go off in party mode...

I may be wrong Dorganath, but isn't the East module run on a smaller server than West and Central? I ask this because the last couple of times I have been on East with a party of 8 or more we are experiencing a good amount of lag in battles. With 2 separate parties on East it is rather aggravating. By throwing Planes and East onto the same server we take away the chance for one out of 2 groups on East to avoid lag by making a trip to the Planes.

I suggest to leave it as it is or to upgrade East before throwing Planes on that server as well.

It is run on the same server specs, with the same amount of memory. So all is the same. The issue is that East server is not rebooted for hundreds of hours because it is rarely played on--and thus people do not ask us to reboot it.

If it is laggy, let us know and we will reboot it.

All game servers have the same specifications (HD, Memory, Processor)...I just spent $5500 to make it like that (well several months ago I did that).

There are a ton of ways to get to the planes server.. it is just not as obviously accessible as say bouncing to central(there are portals on east and central both and some of the planes are non hostile). I built the planes server for the higher levels that had done thier tour of east and wanted something more challenging. I would rather see people branch out and use it more rather than the months of work I layed into it go down the drain.

With all of the Drow we ought to make an Underdark server with a starting area for the Drow, like a city close to the surface. Some servers do that with some success.

I like that idea :O and make it rather hard to reach the surface so they'd have to be level 5-8 to do so!
