Dwarven Beards?
« on: February 26, 2007, 12:29:38 PM »
Do dwarven women have beards in Layo? I know in NWN Dwarven females are beardless (which seems utterly wrong to me).

What is the official line?

Beards.. Beards... da longer the bedder
*laughs spilling half his mug of Ale onto his own beard then slam the mug on the table spilling some more on it*

besides, there are some heads for dwarven female with beards... not long enough but still there is some (now I don't know if these are Layo or CEP specific or not, didn't tried with the standard NWN)

I have always imagined it is up to the player, since there hasn't been any official position on it and each person comes at it from his own perspective built upon previous experience.  In other words, since people talk in-character about bearded Dwarven ladies, it's not impossible or even uncommon to see a Dwarven woman with a beard.  But beards aren't necessarily as important among the women as the men (which might be because of Clan traditions, or just personal preference), so many do not have beards.

I would say that, to a dwarf, a beard is just another part of the hair, at least in terms of women. Some might wear it long, some short, some shaved off.

And then, there might even be dwarven women who don't grow beards at all.

Ok with you so far, but the point I am asking is that biologically dwarven women have the ability to grow beards as rich and fine as their male counterparts?

I would imagine it being a bit like with humans. We probably only have 20% of the body hair of a standart dwarf. ;)

Females will grow beards that are less rich than those of males. Still, they are able to grow them, and there might always be exceptions.

I think it's alot like armpit hair and leg hair is for human women.  They CAN grow them, but the majority of adventuring and travelling one shave them off for cultural issues.  Back at home deep in the halls they may be more likely to let their beards flow, far from the taunts and stares of squeamish surfacers.

I think that the type of dwarf subrace that they are would also dictate this a little...  Duergar males tend to be beardless and bald, and Ed states specifically that FEMALE Duergar don't have any facial hair on their racial forum entry.  (which means some males might be hairy, but its rare) Golden dwarves tend to value their bears more than any other subrace, and keep them well-groomed, so there may be a few blonde bearded lasses in their lineage with nice, silky manes, softer than a baby's bottom, smelling sweet and flowery like a spring morn.  Shield dwarves are the standard Voraxian type, and probably the least apt to remember to shave or groom their beards.  These would probably be the most frightening of dwarven women; even the stoutest of warriors best proceed with caution carrying gifts of ale and mutton in abundance.

If you base it off of various novels (From Forgotten Realms to Dragonlance), dwarven women grow beards, but not as well as the males. Now that leads to whatever you want and gives you the freedom to tailor your character however you want. If you want a female dwarf with a beard that rivals any male, then go for it. If you want a bald headed and bearded female dwarf, go to to http://www.balddwarvenchicks.com...hehe serious though, go for it.
