Monsters Spawn too Close
« on: March 24, 2007, 09:35:23 PM »
This is as a result of this thread: Layonara Monster-Spawn System

I will post the areas where I believe the trigger for monster spawns is too close to the actual spawn point.

The obvious first area to check was the group of spiders that spawn outside the entrance to the Silkwood Cave, seeing how I have experienced this more than once before. I exited the cave (I was there when I logged on) and spotted the Eyeball up ahead, as well as the Ettercap a bit further along. These two monsters are always there, and do not appear out of nowhere (unless you have killed them and wait for them to re-spawn). Important to remember is that I saw both of these from quite a distance, proving that the character's visual range is not to blame for what is about to happen.

I ignored the Eyeball, and walked closer to the Ettercap, until it spotted me and came after me. I disposed of it quickly and started moving, slowly, toward the exact area I know the spiders appear in. One step at the time, stopping with each one in order to give them a chance to appear in case of server lag. When I was only a few feet away from their spawn-point, 5-7 spiders appeared out of thin air, and because of my near proximity, they all came after me, making short work with Cederic's already-battered body.

I realize it could have been one of the "bad timing"-occurrences, but I can assure you that this has happen more than once before. I will, however, attempt it again the next time I am in the area, if you require further proof (I can also capture it in video).

I would think this specific area is already known for this, seeing how it's right in between two Spider Cocoons, so if this spawn-point has already come to your attention, I would expect as much. I will report other findings as I come across them.

Really, I've always viewed this as one of the more RP-appropriate "right on top of us" spawns.

While the ogres who used to infest Hlint seemed to have the unrealistically uncanny ability to jump out from the ground itself, I figure forest + spiders = spiders' nest in trees above you, hidden by the leaves.  Thus the spiders drop from the trees around you, and do literally "spawn in on top of you".

That's the way that I've always played that one, anyway.

I do want to make something clear. In some cases (a fair few mind you) ambushes and spawning "on top" of one is expected and is as intended. A classic example are spiders coming from trees or elements appearing from the ground or beetles coming from various places or umber hulks coming from stone/rock walls. Those things will not be "fixed" as in many cases they are as intended.

We will also take a look at the respawn time as it seems those may be problematic as well.

Oh, I understand. It make sense, just like you say. It would be ideal if there was some way to spot them "in the trees", though. Maybe the nearby spider webs will work fine for that, however. This is good to know, for future reference. Sorry for taking up your time.

No problems.  It's good to ask.

For what it's worth, I did a scan of the respawn timers, and while that one was not in error, there were a handful of encounters that were indeed far too short on West, Central and East.  These will be fixed as soon as possible of course, so in asking the question, you drew attention to the issue which will ultimately help everyone! :)

I really think this spawn is okay and when I was looking at it I can see where you would have been "ambushed" coming from the cave to the encounter as the spawn point is near that end of the encounter trigger. I adjusted it some, but not very much.

I don't think this is a bug but I gave it a benefit of the doubt.

Heh, that 'ambush' didn't used to be so bad! I just got pasted there by handfuls of arachnids, when I used to be able to take on a couple at a time in order to gather that precious spider silk!

Despite the hassle this causes me, I think the spider ambush is great. It makes perfect sense and adds to that fearful atmosphere that enormous arachnids should always be accompanied by.

I'm still having trouble with mercenaries near Fort Vehl attacking travellers on the road. Two days ago, I do believe, there were two graves on the road there, right by the AT into Vehl, and my companion was slain twice on the same road - resulting in the loss of a lot of gold, as we were trying to bank it! (Both owners of the graves, and my companion were about level eight.)

I know I saw Kirbiana posting a similar comment
somewhere, as well.
