PC Troubles - Looking for help
«

My PC went belly up on me yesterday. Im using my wifes laptop at the moment, while I try and figure out how to get my pc running again.
Yesterday when I went to turn it on I kept geting stuck and getting error messages before windows would open up.
Here are examples of the messages I was getting
the registry cannot load the hive (file) \\systemroot\\system32\\config\\SOFTWARE
its corrupt, absent, or not wrtiable
I tried using f8 and stating in safemode, and using last know good configuration, both times I get this message.
Windows could not start because the following fine is mising or corrupt: \\WINXP\\SYSTEM32\\CONFIG\\SYSTEM
Then it tells me I can attept to repair this file by starting the windows setup from my windows CD.... well I finally got it to read the CD right away and I got it to start up this repair mode..... But I cant figure ut how it works at all!!
I'd appreciate any help from the community... in walking me thru this and geting my PC back!
Thanks

Following the instructions in the link and I cant get past screen 6.
They said its aother poorly worded screen and not to wory that I am still on the right track but I cant figure out how to get past here....
If I hit ENTER it looks for a disk with a previous version of windows..... if I hit F3 then it just takes me out of the prograa]m completly.
what am I doing wrong... .or not doing to get to screen 7?

Does it find a previous version of Windows? or does it just continue to look?

From another document
here
:
Next, Windows Setup will find existing Windows XP installations. You will be asked to repair an existing XP installation, or install a fresh copy of Windows XP.
If no installations are found, then you will not be given the option to repair. This may happen if the data or partition on your drive is too corrupted.
If it's not finding an installation your only option might be to re-install XP. What happened before this problem started?

SpinRite
should tell you the physical state of the hard drive, but you would have to be willing to pay about one hundred US dollars.

Guardian, you may want to start by making a backup of your hardware profile (save hardware profile) just to give you an extra fall back point. Given your issues, I'd also recommend a full backup of any critical data for a worst case scenario.
