Hello all

Hello to all who remember me *waves*

Since I had heard that V3 had been released I have been getting a slight itch to begin to play again, but I've struck a serious dilemma that I hope to solve by asking for advice from the Layonara community. This is first and foremost a question to people who have been here for so long that they cannot remember what life was like without Layonara, but only because they might have faced a similar dilemma, so others are welcome to voice their opinions as well. Because, honestly, I am a bit lost.

So the question is, whether to bring back my old character or begin a new with a totally new submission?

The history, the effort put into the old character, all of the time spent playing him - this is both a pro and a con for continuing with Rufus. On the one hand it enriches the playing experience, on the other, it burdens it with problems that go back years into the past.

Starting a new on the other hand requires a lot of time and dedication which is often difficult to find. A solution for that would be to begin in a group with other characters, but I am ashamed to say that I have started and ruined such an attempt. So I would like to use this post to apologize to the people that were involved in the said project.

So the question is, what would you do in such a situation?

Retire and begin a new
Make Rufus an NPC and begin a new (with permission of course)
Continue playing only Rufus
Continue playing Rufus and begin a new character as well?
Kill Rufus and get the hell out of Layo (really hope there won't be many of these :) )
Another option?

Another question that is tied to the first one, how many from the WL list are actually actively playing at the moment? (Well besides Ozy, we all know the elf is immortal and never quits :) ) The answer to this question should prove whether the epics usually grumble and talk a lot on the forums, but never actually play heh.

Thank you in advance for comments!

Well, I've seen Plen, Bris, Connor, Varka... Och. A pile of 'em. Athus is the only one I don't think I've ever seen in-game, even since the V3 switch.

As to your question? Well, I am a bit biased, considering that I have a character hovering on the edge of deletion if the apprenticeship doesn't pan out... But. :)

I think, even setting aside my own reasons to want Rufus around, that you should continue playing Rufus from time to time, but also start a new character. You'll have an alternate... A choice of who to play; of what kettle of fish to crack open. My advice on that? Well. Something different from Rufus... ;) Perhaps an Aeridinite?

How about: Kill Rufus and reanimate him to guard the ummm....temple? ;)

Just kidding, of course!

That's really your call. I'd personally advise against the killing/NPC route until you're sure you don't have anything more to contribute to him.  Keep him around, if offline, for at least a little bit.

Keep Rufus. I liked him. He's in my opinion, all a wizard should be ;)

Argh !  Kill off Rufus???

Undeniably one of the coolest Layo characters..

Really it's a personal choice, but I think you would regret loosing Rufus completely and the old man still has much to contribute.

Good to see you back btw

Begin a new character but keep Rufus around. Its definitely the best of both worlds.

Since a lot has changed in V3, you'd get to see the new world through a new characters eyes, but Rufus would still be there if you ever felt the need to go back.

I haven't been around all that long but I would vote for the option that gives you the most flexibility and fun.  So probably keep your old character and make a new one.  You can see if you have the time to put into the new character or if you don't then you will always have the old one.  No need to burn a bridge that you may regret later.  :)

"Continue playing Rufus and begin a new character as well?"

That's my choice, plus I always liked traveling with Rufus.

Good to see you back!

Yeah, keep Rufus in the back, and start a new one with me. Besides theres a  certain voraxian that could always use a good corathinte to protect him from time to time. *wink* *wink*

I'm going to say "Retire Rufus as a NPC and start fresh" because I know you well enough to say that with Rufus around and his duties aswell, starting a new character (you've tried) won't be easy.

Rufus is awesome, so I'd enjoy having him around, but if his duties stop you from enjoying Layonara, then so be it.

The Corath temple needs a Rufus around.  Keep him even if it's just for short RP sessions only.

If youre keen for something fresh, something new, start one up as its the right time to do it.

Agreed with Polak, I have heard of Rufus and it would be a shame to see him go. But I  always maintain it'd a good idea to have a good/neutral/evil aligned characters, so I can choose whoever when the situation warrants it.

I'm a big fan of having more than one character so I would advise you to keep Rufus around.  I can also understand that sometimes proper in game roleplay creates character responsibilities that are nearly impossible to keep.  I think most people that play here understand that...not to say that it's not dissappointing when you (meaning everyone involved) can't meet the objective/task/meeting/adventure/quest because of real world commitments or pressure.  I think most players do what they can in game and try to have fun and enjoy it while it lasts.  Getting back to the starting other characters part...after playing a variety of characters I think I enjoy and understand the game better for having more than one type of character although it is a lot of extra work.  Hope that helps and hope to see you in game with whatever you decide.

I miss Rufus! Old school evil done right! And we haven't finished nudging him  back to the light, yet. :P

I completely understand foreseeing issues with keeping the old character though, so...have to echo the "your call," I think. I don't really think he should be NPCed just yet...

It's hard making a new character and trying to play anything except the one you've put so much time in, but on the other hand, Rufus is probably going to get seriously lost when you play him the first time, so it would probably be good to start up a new one at least to explore around. That way a new one can be confused instead of the intimidating wizard. ;)

Definitely keep him around and maybe even make a stable of finely groomed villains to do your bidding from afar... Meanwhile go right ahead and make a new character if you have the open slots!  I'm furiously planning one right now, given how all the starting areas are so different, it's a shame to just barrel through them with my higher lvl characters.  Variety is the spice of life.

G'day Ar7,

Not sure how anyone else can answer this for you, we play this game for fun ... wouldn't you choose whatever option strikes you as the most fun?

Having said that, i'm a bit with lonnarin. Two sexes, thirty classes, thirty races, eight playable alignments ... there is 14,000 odd character options with which to experiment!!

Whichever you choose, welcome back and I hope you enjoy v3.

Cheers,

Also setting aside my personal reasons, I say keep him. You got all of the hard leveling out of the way and are primed for great role-play and enrichment of the world and other characters. Have him available when the itch to play him arises, and start a new one to use when you feel like it otherwise. He's a totally cool PC on many levels...

heh, touching on Acacea's comment of "old school evil," I want to metnion that there's a whole new element and generation of "evil" among the PC's. One that is more ragged and disrespecting than the coniving (sp?) and devious "evil" of the past. It might be nice to juxtapose the two, and perhaps to take in new disciples to teach the old ways. =P all that said, Rufus may find an interesting niche if you keep him around. And he may find himself at odds with more than just the "goodly" peoples.

My suggestion is to bring him back and play him. I can't go in to all of the reasons why but that is my suggestion.
