How to price items?
« on: May 12, 2007, 12:43:54 AM »
I have looked around on here, especially in the trade forums, and I cannot figure out how to price something I want to sell or purchase from another player. I know about the pricing lens but that doesn't always help. For example if I wanted to sell a box of aloe is there a particular going rate? or lion leathers? spider silk? I know for some of these things you can post and people make offers but what happens when you cant seem to find out how much something is going for? Is there somewhere else on here to look? I am asking because I Have been hmmm scolded shall we say, for selling things to cheap. I have also had some folks send me tells, nicely, saying I am selling to cheap and that one can get in trouble for that. Any input would be appreciated.

I usually do a search on the item and base my price off of what I see there.

Generally I just check the trade forums and see what they have been recently going for...  Thats about all you can do because the lens can and is off quite a bit on certain things.

Stickied in this very forum is "Zero's rough pricing guide." While not everything is there, a great deal of information about the about pricing is available there if you can sift through all the mess of posts. Also, I'm no going to guarantee everything there is current. Perhaps I will work up a new pricing guide... oh, wait... I have to have free time first.... =P

Seriously, though, somewhere in there I posted about the prices of several raw goods. My prices were disputed, and rightfully so as I've worked the layo market much longer now and tend to agree with the critiques.

One thing you have to address is demand. If something is highly sought after, the price should increase. Demand for an item is what determines it's value. If nobody wants something, it's worthless, but if everyone wants it, it's priceless. Aloe, for instance, is often in a fairly high demand. As such, it should be sold at fairly high prices. Eggs, oddly enough, also have a tendency to become a hot commodity, and as such I've seen a box of eggs sell for as much as 10,000 gp. Way too high you say? Not if you consider their demand, and that demand determines value. (or at least it does in a RL setting. thanks to an infinite supply of gold coins, sometimes prices in Layo can get inflated as the value of money decreases because everyone has lots of it... which is again an issue of demand)

Anywho, hope this helps.

I found prices change all the time, just like in real life too. Like the price of the PS2 coming down due to a new shiny PS3 coming out.
As Milton put, it's all about supply and demand, if everyone had boxes of Aloe, Aloe would be quite cheap. It's like skeleton knuckles, I can easily get a boxful in one trip, or almost a box, and get about 250-350 trues for it!

So yeah, just look on the forums or ask players. I don't think players will try and con you into making it cheaper.
