Absence Due To...
«

Just wanted to apologize for my lack of Kinai-ness on the server as of late. I've switched to a Linux system and realized soon afterwards that
1. I don't have a single NwN CD for installation at home, just have the files on my flash drive for moving from computer to computer
2. NwN is a .exe and so I have to find a way to start it up without using a single disk.
3. There is no 3. Thank goodness.
To all quests, commitments, jobs, and any roleplays Kinai may be tied to, I just want to say sorry and that there is no guarantee right now that I can make any. If you need a roleplay reason for her absence, just assume she's taking care of Seras or sulking around due to Hawklen's vanishing from in-game that we are all aware of on such OOC.
Most likely, if this works, I'll have NwN running sometime tonight, but since I switched to Linux two days ago, I highly doubt I'll be able to get on... I'll probably end up messing things up worse.
Beautiful system though. I'm in love with it.

All your base are belong to Tux.
Just be sure to carefully follow the nwn->linux guide on the bioware boards. I often have an issue with the SDL libraries during installation, but that is because I run an x86-64 version of linux.
Have fun.

Ick. That stuff on the Bioware boards is a mess. I was thinking about using a totally different site. *giggles*
In the meantime, I need a tissue. Allergies are killing me.

Don't hurt me for saying this, but I'm using Ubuntu!
My friend was trying to talk me into Gentoo, but I wanna be able to actually use one of them before tackling on the uppity tough ones.

Good choice on distro. I use the server edition for our systems, its great. Love it.
Just did a quick google for running NWN on ubuntu. Found something from the Ubuntu boards....didn't have time to read it fully but hope it is of some use to you:

As Tanman said, it's a good distro. The popst he referenced is also great! The author of the post has a script that will ease the install of NWN on Ubuntu. If you need any help, just ask.

Well, managed to fix up my NwN installation enough to log on, but half my visuals in-game are chromed, all my portraits are missing, and I can't get out of fullscreen. It's irritating, but I'm dealing.
In the meantime, does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this particular new and insane twist my Linux and NwN mix has pulled?
In other news, my birthday is tomorrow *grins* June 30th.

Well, from what I know of NWN you should be able to switch the settings from Full Screen to windowed when you start NWN, but I know nothing of Linux so that might not even work.

You need to change the setting in nwn.ini, you need to add FullScreen=0. Did you run the fixinstall script?

Yes to both, Nyra.
Seem to have a current problem of chromed out things, lag in general (which is rare considering during Windows, I had zero lag), and I crash after a while. Whole system shuts down. Kind of weird for Linux to do.
I just forgot a line in the nwn.ini for the windowed mode.
AllowWindowedMode=1 line.

Chromed out things sound like missing textures, and since you mention lag - you are using proprietary gfx drivers, right?
As for portraits, it sounds like either permissions or case problem...

Why does it sound like Linux, which I agree to be better then windows, is more of a PITB then Windows when you first start using it?
Case problems, permissions... coding, editting ini files. What gives

Inertia, what kind of Vid card are you using?
And Shiff, it can be but as an example, a party of 8 or so of us went to do mithral and emerald a few weeks ago, I was using NWN under Linux and never crashed once in the 5+ hours we were playing. Crashes do occur but in general NWN under linux is more stable and uses quite a few less resources than windows does.

ATI with SGI driver things, I think. I switched to flgrx (I think that's correct) for a while, but Beryl didn't agree with it. I just changed back.
"proprietary gfx drivers, right?"
Got ATI Accelerated things here.
Just beginning to wonder if it's a "PEBKAC" >.>

Does NWN work with fglrx and without Beryl? (note that Beryl has decent impact on OpenGL apps' performance)

It wouldn't be a problem if I could just turn Beryl off when I run NwN, but the fglrx keeps it stuck on Gnome's Window Manager (Metacity, I believe), and doesn't allow me to use Beryl at all.

Interia,
I'm familiar with a few of your issues, here's some suggestions to help.
If you haven't already done so, be sure to run "fixinstall" from within the NWN directory. This can be done from within the NWN installation at a bash prompt. Simply type "./fixinstall"
You _may_ get an error that the file "patch.key" was not found. If so, create an empty text document named patch.key in the root of the NWN install folder. Re-run the ./fixinstall command. BE CERTAIN to delete the patch.key file after running the install, or you'll get an error when you launch nwn (at least I have in the past).
The above should take care of the chromed texture issue (hopefully). If not, there may be a potential issue with you video card drivers. If you have an NVIDIA based chipset, be sure to download and run the latest install bin file (or whatever is provided by UBUNTU, I'm rusty on the app-get process). Information is at the nvidia website.
For the full screen problem. 2 steps are required.
Edit the nwn.ini file and under [Display Options] set FullScreen=0. Be certain that you edit only within the display options and not under the [Sound Options] or another block - nwn has been finicky on that before. Next, add in AllowWindowedMode=1 just below FullScreen=0.
Save your changes and you should be good to go.

Geesh. I'm from the time I had to use WINE or CEDEGA to run NWN, no port to Linux. Oh well.

Hmm. Maybe I'll just use WINE then.
I have a feeling I need to get the actual CDs from my friend and reinstall.
