The year after Confederation, the Governor General declared July 1st "Dominion Day", a celebration of the creation of Canada as a nation.

Various things led up to today's firework displays, bands, and whatnot, and in 1982 the name officially changed from Dominion Day to Canada Day.  It's basically a "aren't we happy to be Canadian" day, a stat holiday ('cause everyone likes a long weekend), and an excuse to drink beer, party all night, and set off fireworks.

Also, the CBC usually has some fun programming on.  They kind of have to.

Big ups to all of Canada!  I was in Ottawa for the big bash, and once again it did not disappoint.

Man I miss the motherland.  My parents decided to move down here in Florida when I was 2, but we always used to visit every summer for at least 3 weeks between late july and early august.  Now with college and work, I can't afford the time to take off to the great white north during these blasted Floridian heatwaves.  It's bloody 92 degrees F right now, and I work in a warehouse....  I can't stand the heat, at least in the bitter cold you can slit open a bantha and sleep in his intestines for comfort...  down here you can run around naked and still melt to death.

But most of all, I miss Hostess ketchup & pickle-flavored chips.  Sure they cause 2nd degree chemical burns on your tongue in mass quantities... but they're totally worth it.
