I'm just writing this to raise awareness...it's great when a new person joins and stays. So I'm just appealing to anyone who doesn't already, to look out for new people and send them a tell when they come on. If you don't recognise the login name on the server status page then try and make them welcome and show them around a little, maybe lend a few pointers. I think this would be really great for the server and its longevity.

I've been doing that with anyone who is lower level than me

I remember when i started, it was great when people came and showed me around, or helped me learn to rp better.

I think I've been helping New Players since I was able, still love to, too.

had druid class outside hempstead a few nights ago to help the new leaves relax and feel moe a part of the world

Especially wanted to mention people sending a few tells about things like deity relations and other rules/rp restrictions...especially if yours is hostile explain it to people and why your character is annoyed/disliking of theirs. I think many people are taken aback by this...from what I've seen and a few friendly tells stating the deity rules and how they work could go a long way. Figured I would mention it here, forgot to in the original post.

It's good to hear some people helping out the newbies. I wonder if we could start a thread for new people where they could either be added by someone watching character submissions, or they add themselves and we keep an eye out for them?

i watch out any who submit druids just because i play druids so much and its easier for the younglings to have someone to help them out with the basics

That's great, more complex classes with many challenges need an extra hand and if people take care of their 'own' then it spreads it out across and gives them an RP place to call home, as well as some friends OOC.

we had i think a four almost five hour session just wandering over a few areas, camping and showing some people druids arent scary and helping honoras son with his pet garter snake

well sometimes i can be scary but only after i watch you kill a panther cub and leave it to rot

Can I add something?

While the intentions are clearly in the right place it can be really daunting to get tells from strangers when you first join. Sometimes it's best to not come on too strong with new people. I now that when I'm in a new place I like to fade into the background a bit and watch how things work until I get comfortable enough to make friends. Friendly welcoming tells are nice but there is such a thing as being, well, too friendly.

Maybe make your introductions and offers to help in character, if possible (as in go to the starting cities and seek them out, and have your character offer to help theirs.) I remember I had both situations when I first joined oh so long ago and I was pretty freaked out by getting a "Hi there! Are you new?" tell five minutes into logging on for the first time (I really just wasn't ready to talk to anyone yet), but I was extremely gracious when another character stopped what they were doing to show my character around-- all in the game.

That's cool I guess....but in the end what I'm trying to create is a helpful atmosphere, this world can be daunting sometimes with the sheer volume of lore and rules and I think a hands up is good. Personally I would've welcomed it **laughs**.

I guess if I do offer to help you and you don't want it then just let me know and I'll leave you alone

When I'm on regularly, I notice new player names a bit more... And, as several of the folks in this thread can attest to, I have this habit of sending a tell, usually saying "Welcome to Layonara.

While getting tells from random folks can be daunting, there's a lot more about Layonara to be daunted by - we have a fairly exacting (*tips his hat to Darkstorme*) standard for Character Submissions, and at least three and a half piles of rules to sort through, before you can even write one up. In the end, Layo's not right for some folks... But it's more than worth the effort, for others. For those others, a little helping hand, or just a smiling welcome(!) can be enough to get them past that rough acclimation period.

The best thing about Layonara's the community.

layo is worth the effort, even though i didn't read half the rules until a few das after playing , it's definatley worth it.
Definatley, if it wasn't i wouldn't have spent 25 hours on it in trhe last 4 days at least.

I agree with Miasma regarding the tells. hat maybe a better idea is to include them in your RP when you can and keep in IC. One of my more enjoyable moments when I first came to Layonara, was meeting with the scary with spiders crawling over Daralith, Rhynn/Lia/Kei combo and the cynicism of Ozymandias.

All of them 'didn't' hide away in their houses or seperated parts of the world, but rather intermingled with the world. They stayed completely IC which made it all the more fun.

It also depends on if your character is one who intermingles with people and stays to themselves or if he's a 'people person', if he keeps to himself or is perchance slightly agrophobic then sitting in public places is perhaps not the best thing, if it doesn't make sense... I believe that many new players would welcome a friendly tell, but they just have to say no if they don't.....

Many I had spoken to believed people didn't care and that the epics and upper levels didn't want naught to do with them IC and OOC, which is what prompted this post initially. There was a genuine and true feeling that there were no opportunities for RP or group play from many newer people.

I have previously and will continue talking to all the new people to the server and give them a heads up on how the world works and a warm welcome as I believe this helps them want to stay on. If I was to try and do it only IC there's a good chance I wouldn't see them or may miss them despite trying. This isn't to say it's all OOC, I often use tells to find said new person and then do it IC taking them on a quick tour and giving them suggestions on places to train or tasks that need doing, sometimes sending them on tasks (I don't need) for a little coin.

@Krell, True, the character may not be social. They may not be in social places. But what about when people are walking across different areas and meet up with one another? That is an opportunity to intermingle IC.

I find that receiving a tell can be totally out of whack sometimes and receiving it out of the blue well can be a bit strange. Keeping IC, makes things more fun and adds immersion to the world. And that in my mind what makes Layonara real and fun.

Oh I agree, but sometimes it's hard to find people. I try to when possible, use tells to meet up with someone.
