Last flash of the duellist
« on: November 16, 2008, 07:20:03 AM »
Sad rumors start to spread quickly from Dalanthar to northern parts of Dregar and further, as a pitch black heared man wearing a blue fullplate enters the town carrying lifeless body on his arms. He walks with determined steps through the town as the towns folks around looking at the sad scene, whispering to each other. Strong arms carrying a lifeless body of older, silvery heared man through the city. They can been seen leaving the city, heading north, towards Willows Weep.

A few days later a tall woman, well dressed except for the blackened hem of her dress, and red hair beginning to streak with silver walks into town of Willows Weep. She is seen heading for the monument at the edge of the town.

A few later report hearing the haunting melody of a flute and the woman's voice. Some even can recall the words.

A rose is left on many of the markers in the buildings, including the newly intered man.

A woman garbed in veils of the desert , head to foot, finds once more the path to willows weep. She notices the newly grafted tomb of her old friend, last of this place, this world. And she cries. For many hours, she cries.

Bending down, she lays upon the constructed grave, a single coin that those who knew him may recognize.

With a wisp of the wind, she turns, and is gone once more.

An elf, oddly devoid of all colour and wearing only black walks quietly through the trees towards the site as directed. His eyes, rubbed red and raw from hours of crying look dead and lifeless as he approaches; in his hands he carries a golden harp.

Reaching the spot the elf falls to his knees and the tears flow once more. For a day he knew would come, the emotion fills him all the same. Through tear-strewn eyes he places his fingers on the strings of the harp to play one final sombre tune. The melody is slow, the strings plucked lightly and at times not at all as the emotion overwhelms the player.

Finishing his melody Karn curls up beside the monument and remains there for hours to come sitting close all through the night.

At dawns first light he mutters a final farewell to his love,

"Luck t'ye lad, now an' forever...I love ye..."

The elf takes off his feathered hat and hangs it on the monument before heading off deeper into the woods, seemingly disinterested in his destination.

[INDENT]After a time, a wet fog begins emanating from the resting place of the most recent dreamer in Willow's Weep. Puddles of condensation form, rippling with the faintest of sounds reminiscent of the singing waters of a distant wood. Three tiny elfin creatures pull themselves out of the pools, an iridescent sheen to their watery features, and "wings" not meant for flight but for brief twirls and glides above the surface arching from their backs.

After looking around, whispering amongst themselves and pointing, they turn and retrieve a star shaped diamond, glittering in the mists. "A present from the princess!" one whispers to the monument, as if it could hear. "Lucky..." the other mutters. "Not so lucky if he's dead!" the first retorts."Shhh!" hisses the last to them both.

"This diamond, but a memory," she explains as they press their burden to the stone, pale webbing showing between stretched fingers. "It passes not the grave," another adds, and moisture darkens the area surrounding it as a tear forms in the center of the gem. Slowly it sinks back into the stone, as if the erosion of water were taking place in a moment. The three messengers step back to admire their handiwork, the star now set as though it had always been.

"Was that it?" one whispers anxiously. "I think so," murmurs another. "We forgot to say thank you!" the last exclaims, gills fluttering at her neck. "Thank you?" the first offers in a helpful voice. The one in the middle pushes at the first, who dances up and back out of the way with a quick outstretch of gliding wings. Each of the queer little fey creatures clusters again around the diamond and reaches a tiny hand to touch it, and their melodic voices raise in what in other times might resemble school children reciting a lesson.

We pray that time gave meaning
To our words well meant
And that we played a small part
In a life well spent

"Thank you!" adds one again, earning a swat from a companion. "Good night!" calls another as they slip back into the small pools of water. The last pokes her head back out to look one more time, and waves. "Sleep well..."

The mists dissipate with their departure, the puddles shrinking and disappearing altogether, until all that remains for the next traveler to discover is the glistening diamond set in the stone, and the last remnants of moisture in the air...
