Lower all HP, AC and AB's for creatures
« on: December 11, 2009, 11:38:48 PM »
I want to be able to solo more with my fighter, but the creatures have too many HP, AC and too large of an AB to make it possible.  Can we add some CR-30+ things that fighters can get as much XP and loot for like mages, bards, and clerics can by themselves?  It's only fair.  Also, we may be able to just make the damage on weapons incredibly better based on pure fighter, barbarian, and weapon master levels so that melee classes have a chance to do things on their own -- that way the extra weapon damage will not apply to cleric or paladin levels.

As an alternative, we can also raise the magic immunity or saves of all creatures and justify it with natural selection and breeding due to overkilling the species by magic users.

Hear hear!!!

I check the Server Status pages...and all I really see are magic using classes with fighter and other melee classes as a second or third class. Pure melee classes like fighter can't realistically take a magic using class because their armor will interfere with the spell casting.

osXmallard just reiterated what I posted in this thread although I was making a general statement:

Lowering the CR for basic townguards would be awesome too.  It always cracks me up to see a 10 true/week townguard show up invincible to the players walking past him, with his long long list of immunities and bonuses.  Ahhh, this door-man is lvl 30 and sees ALL types of illusion without fail.  He sees through your hood, he sees you under invisibility.  He sees you when you're in the bathroom.  How did he reach lvl 30?  Just standing there.  NPCs don't need WLCDQs or even to train in order to get uber.  They're just born that way.

*Murphy the 23-year-old townguard rookie holds aloft the severed head of the 38th lvl PC wizard, having seen through all his disguise spells and inexplicably holding invincible against the 9 hellballs in a row.*

LOL  @lon as much as I find your post a crack up I have always thought of the guard level issues as a representation of the swarm of guards that would drop down on you if you were to try something :).  Also as the swarm of guards that are actually at the gates checking people as they come and go.

That actually would be a pretty cool idea: to set up a match in the Arena with some of the Guards, like the ones in Prantz, to fight against player PC's.  It could be a one-on-one kinda thing, or it could be like three of their best versus other groups of three.  It could be used to raise money for some of the relief efforts.  Whacha think?

//edit: Oh, I forgot, if they are set to be invinsible (never take damage) that would have to be toggled off ;)

//second edit: I meant to say player PC's vs Guards

With reference to this specifically, I'd have to say that I can't imagine a Sulterian guard ever, under any circumstances, participating in such an event.  Well, the sole circumstances would be under orders... but I can't imagine their commanders giving the orders.

Perhaps some other NPCs, however...

With regards to the initial post in the thread, I disagree profoundly for a variety of reasons which I will expound upon if asked, but foremost among them the line "I want to be able to solo more with my fighter...".

Ask ask!!

What is being asked is that fighters (non-casters) get the same option as casters, I can't see how that is wrong, and if it is, does that mean we should remove casters ability to solo or maybe make rules against it?

Actually, I'm not entirely sure the original post in this thread was completely serious.  It seems some are taking it as such but more are snickering behind their hands, and some others are taking offense to it, interpreting it as a sarcastic retort to their own suggestions.

Whatever the case, we have over 2300 custom creatures.  Lowering the HP, AB and AC of every single one of them (or even just those that the higher-level melee-oriented characters care about) would be a monumental task. On this fact alone, it is unlikely to be done.

Ironically, this would actually make things easier for those mages who solo using summons and/or Polymorph/Shapechange.

I'm not opposed to a mage who has the power to turn into a demon, dragon or golem actually being able to kill something in those forms. If during the mage duel of Sword & the Stone, Merlin turned into the dragon and declared "oh ho! I am now a sitting duck with limited battle potential who can't cast spells, kill me in two rounds!" it would have been rather anti-climactic.

Busted by Dorg!  The original post was half sarcastic and was based on another thread about not having enough punch in a mass death ability.

The serious part behind it is the fact that there is a huge imbalance between melee and caster.  I cannot take a 24th lvl ftr/wm anywhere without at least a support party of a cleric and mage.  Check out the server status... most of the time, without a doubt I can see a mage soloing somewhere on the server... whether thats skull crusher cave, shara's hideout, the great forest, natural cavern, etc.  All extremely high XP, excellent loot, relatively lower risk creatures with some low save which gets beat by a casters mass death spell.  Anyone need screenshots?

So, generally I sign on, look around for a party, realize everyone is somewhere else far away, then log off after killing some 1xp kobalds.  Why?  Because I can't do anything else by myself.  Anywhere my fighter can even think about getting comparable xp to what a mage can do is nearly impossible.  The thunder peaks used to be a great area for a pair of fighters to go, but then it changed significantly and I'm not sure anyone even goes there anymore.  I don't have 6 hours to go to the Deep or one of the other amazingly cool areas that are built for epic characters.  I have one caster, a 17th lvl buffing cleric who has one death spell (currently with a DC of 39) and she's worthless in combat.

"But osx, why don't you just RP? You dont need to get xp!"
I'd sit around and RP for hours if there was someone to RP with, but all those guys are racing to 40 somewhere and aren't interested in the core of layo, which is the RP.  Outside of scripted quests, WLDQ's, CDQ's and some isolated individuals, the RP is dead.  In my opinion, we have turned into an action server with occasional RP... it used to be the core and the reason I stayed so long and became a GM.

Being a Rp server ... and if you know a mage is out in one of the areas you can't do alone ... send him/her a tell and see if you can join them?  Or meet them and do the run together?  Set up a time to do it with them if they can't help you at the moment?  From what I understand about alot of these type of threads whereas certain areas can only be hunted by certain classes/abilities, there is always the complaint that it can't be done solo by someone.  And the same reply I see in each of those threads is the same.  Its a role-play server.  So, send a tell and set something up.  If you joined Layo just to solo ... well, your going to have difficulties.  Accept it.
