Katanas and Bastard Swords

Perhaps more of a request than a question. If so then I apologize.

Just having a small concern with the Katana and Bastard sword. If you look at there they are exactly the same save for there appearance. Same damage, same crit, even same weight. Though I've only seen them in original NWN and not sure if anythings been done to make them at all different. My thought in doing that is possible adding the Katana to the weapon finesse feat. If you look at both IRL you would see a Katana is used with more precision and a Bastard sword (like most other mid-evil swords) is used with more power. There are also other RL differences. How there used defensively for instance. A bastard sword can take multiple direct blocks a Katana on the other hand can only parry. A full block holds a high risk of damaging if not breaking the katanas blade, rendering the sword useless.

How do I know this? I uh... watch alot of samurai shows. :p

And I'm rambling on...

My second concern is the fact that both the Bastart sword and Katana are wielded as a one handed weapon when there in fact both hand and a half swords (light enough for one with handle long enough for two). This is mainly a minor animation thing and don't think there's any way to change it... but would still be nice if I could wield the katana or bastard sword in two hands when not equipped with a shield. ;)

Ok so... question is (if not obvious enough already) could either of these be done or is weapon finesse hard coded?

If so then maybe add a new feat? Advanced Weapon Finesse? Prereq being normal WF. AWF granting you the ability use dex for heavier one handed weapons. Long Sword, katana, scimitar... maybe even quarter staff.

For the most part I believe these are hardcoded into the Neverwinter engine.  We've added the CEP expanded weapons pack and so far nobody's figured out how to get them to mesh well with weapon feats as it is.  So beware making a weaponmaster in something like falchion or nunchuku.

Being one that uses katana's in his MA classes. It depends of which kind of Katana you are referring too. Ideally they all have names of their own but they are often all referred to a simply katana. In fact, most technique (until the Saya is let go) it is more often to see people use the Katana one handed. those who practice Iaido are more prone to use the Katana one handed, using the Saya as a diversion, block and secondary attack. As those who are practitioner of Kenjutsu will use primordially a two handed stance.

As for NWN, that's how they coded it...

Mmmm, nah... NWN people were just to lazy to add a one hand/two hand toggle for those two swords. :D j/k

I for one prefer the traditional two handed stance... unless scabbard is present then the sheathed stance. I know of at least four different kinds of katanas. Theres the traditional katana, the nah-dachi (katana with extended blade... think Sephiroth ;) ... or Ronmaru Mori), the tanto (short sword variant) and the wakazatchi (dagger variant). The last two being used mainly be ninjas... or as a secondary weapon for samurais.

Wait... am I rambling on again? gotta stop doing that.

Anyways, I'm quite sure the stance thing can't be changed but the other would be nice.

Also may have misspelled two of the swords.

Eh no worries about misspelling. And yes that's what I meant when the Saya (scabbard) is present most will fight one handed. Even then though, it depends on which focus they trained on. If they trained in Kenjutsu will either remained tied to the hip or will be dropped on the floor so they use their favorite two handed stance.

As Lonnarin pointed out correctly, most of the CEP-added weapons don't work properly with a number of feats because those feats were hard-coded to work with those weapon types, and making other weapons use those feats (or changing existing weapons so that they do) is often not possible.

So adding the Katana weapon type to Weapon Finesse isn't going to happen.  (The toggle is definitely not going to happen, since NWN animations don't work that way.)

Sorry, but we work with what we have.
