Shadow Spells and Focus
« on: May 22, 2011, 11:53:52 PM »
Hi all.

I can't remember if this has ever been asked and never been in a position to try it out.

If I had a spellcaster with specialisations in the Illusion and decided to cast a shadowed version of fireball, would the spell:

1.   recieve the DC from illusion focus?
2.  require bat guano even though it's an illusion version?

Cheers,
Polak

1) Pretty sure it would, yes.
2) The Shadow Conjuration spells have no material components, so no.

I was just reading this on Wiki for Shades, and the shadow/shade variants (cone of cold, fireball, firewall, etc.) are cast just like they would normally from their original schools.  The only difference is the spell slot they may occupy.

You said illusion "specialization", where you probably meant "focus", but if a caster had illusions focuses that would not help with shadow/shade variants because they are cast just like they normally would be, so a shadow-fireball would still be from the evocation school.

EDIT: you did say focus below...missed that sorry  :p

The Wiki does provides some other advantages, etc., so might be a good read.

Link for Greater Shadow Conjuration:

Lind for Shades:

As far as the spell material component, like Dorg said, that would probably follow what's required for the actual spell (shades, shadow conj. or greater shadow conj.)

Thats a shame.  It really should adopt the illusion focus DC.  Maybe something to put in suggestions?

I'm not sure we have control of that. I think it's auto-calculated by the NWN engine. I'd have to check scripts to be 100% sure, and I can't do that right now.

I can't confirm this empirically yet, but it looks like the spell could be modified to cast "illusion" variants of the spells by changing the spell types of lines 340-353 in spells.2da to I.

That being said, personally I think it'd be better if a new spellscript were written to replace the generic Fireball, Cone of Cold, etc. scripts with one that included a save vs. illusions, dealing reduced damage if the target makes the save, independent of SR.
