Toran Alignment
« on: August 22, 2011, 07:13:10 PM »
Been thinking about this for sometime and still seems a bit off. As does the alignment of a few other deities.

First off, the alinments of his followers.

LG: Most Common

LN: Few

NG: Rare

The oddness I find there is the fact Toran is a good and righteous deity yet has more followers that are LN rather than NG?

Witch brings me to my next question. What exactly makes Toran LG? He supports rebellion against tyranny and liberation from evil. Gets me thinking he more NG than LG.

Note I was told of Torans support for rebellions when I tried submitting a Rofireinite who supported a rebellion. It was suggested I make him a Toranite instead.

As for the Liberation part 100% CG gives the title Liberator and though that may be a NWN mechanic it still seems quite right.

Additionally reading through various descriptions of the three good alignments. Toran seem a lot more neutral that Lawful. He is both a warrior (chaotic) and a diplomat (lawful)

One thing about Toran is that his followers almost always achieve their goals by following a strict code of conduct. So if they support a rebellion, they do so in a very orderly fashion. More than that, they would not support a rebellion without knowing that it was a righteous act against tyranny. Defeating tyranny while staying in accordance with a strict code of conduct is Lawful Good in an almost zealous way.

At least that is how I see it. There are others with more insight that can explain the matter in more depth.

If you take a look at some of the mantras you see the parts that are good in Toran. Now if you look at the governs you see what makes it lawful (ie what gilshem refers as code).

Honor, Truth, Loyalty, Duty, Vigilance

Now as he said, they wouldn't support a rebellion against law and order that is placed by a legitimate ruling body that follows the rofereinite laws for example and that doesn't kill, harm, molest, enslaves the weak and innocents, from their own kingdom or the neighbors kingdom..

Actually, Toran's Code is the [LORE]Conducts of Virtue[/LORE]:

Valor, Empathy, Conviction, Humility, Sacrifice, Honorable Combat, and Restraint.

Being a warrior does not make one chaotic, first of all.  Toranites fight evil because it is what needs to be done for the greater good of the people of Layonara.  They are strict to their code, they follow high morals, and they do what needs to be done even in the face of adversity.  They also believe that people can change when they want to, have the right motivations and support for doing so, and when they are given the chance to.  They don't believe that everyone -will- change, but part of their code, and the conducts as mentioned above means that they will nearly always offer that opportunity.  If that opportunity is passed up *gestures vaguely*...

Toranites do not support rebellion for the sake of rebellion.  Toranites believe that laws are good and that honor and self-discipline are good qualities.  However, they also believe in goodness.  So, if the rebellion is to stand up for beliefs in honor and goodness and against tyranny, then yes.  If it was just because they felt like rebelling, no.

Toranites are not warriors for the sake of war.  Most of them probably would prefer not to have to go to war.  They do it because they know they have to.  They fight for the greater good.  Yes, maybe that sounds NG, except that they know that their driving force and purpose is for that goodness, which makes it so that they feel they cannot back down no matter if it means that their lives are on the line, which a NG person might choose to waffle.  Toranites hold their duty to their god, their church, their families, and the overall (good) population of Layonara over their own personal fears.  (Valor)

I hope that clears some things up.
