Satyrs
« on: December 04, 2011, 03:09:37 PM »
I have a few questions concerning satyrs, mainly those on Veaspra.

Have had a thought for a wemic bard for a long wile and part if not most involves him being with a band of satyr minstrel. In other words they tout him how to be a bard or at least play music with nature made instruments.

A new thought about the wemic and the satyrs was when he leave Veapra that one of the satyrs joins him. In game the satyr is just for role play and is little more than a familiar or an animal companion. Mostly just a sorta translator for the wemic. Witch then brings me to one of my questions. Are satyrs intelligent enough and/or able speak common?

Again this is mostly concerning the satyrs from Veapra.

I tried looking through Lore and the forum and found little to nothing about satyrs... other than that there sorta tribal bandit like.

Without commenting on the fitness of this potential character's back-story, I will point out that it will not be possible to have a satyr companion mechanically represented in-game for this or any character.  Likewise, it won't be acceptable for the character to make reference to a satyr companion that is not able to be shown on-screen and speak for/through said mechanically non-existent satyr as a way to sort of get around the fact that Wemics do not normally start knowing Common.

Satyrs are intelligent enough to speak Common. Whether they do or not depends on their exposure to it and desire to do so.  Satrys in Layonara are very similar to those of legend and standard D&D.  They are fey creatures and likewise mischievous, chaotic and hedonistic. Their nature would most likely not make them predisposed to traveling with a Wemic and serve as a faithful companion and translator for him.

And yet there are characters with monkeys, snakes and other creatures (not in the companion/familiar list) that cant be shown in game as companions or familiars?

A small creature that rides with a character is one thing (and the monkey was as a result of a quest).  An intelligent, dangerous creature is quite another.  It would be akin to saying that you have a posse of armed guards with you at all times, other people simply cannot see them.

That notwithstanding, as Dorganath pointed out, it would be unlikely that a satyr would wish to loyally help, rather than trick, an inexperienced Wemic.

And who says he wouldn't trick the wemic? With the satyr being the only one of the two who speaks and understands common and (being an unseen or unrepresentative character in game) not able to fight himself the satyre would likely tell others that they well take on any dangerous tasks and when danger rear its ugly head... the satyr cowers behind wemic.

After wandering the fields and forests of Mistone the wemic and satyr come upon a group of orcs.

The satyre hops off the wemics back and duck behind a large rock. "Ummm... you can go fight them. I'll uh... wait right here... behind this rock... good luck!"

And I'm sure there are many other ways the satyr would trick the wemic.

Though all in all my though on this was that the wemic and satyr became best friends during there time on Veapra and remained as such. Though frankly the satyr pretty much just uses the wemic as a personnel body guard. That cowerd. >:/

There is a significant difference in asking for a monkey or a rat or some other sort of "pet" as an RP variance versus asking for a non-standard, dangerous, sentient, vocal and potentially problematic companion for a character. That you're asking for a fey creature like a satyr just compounds the issues.

Regardless, the fitness or acceptance of this idea should not be debated here. I do not believe the idea will be approved as it has been presented above. However, that is not my call to make. It is a matter for the CA process, which does not take place in this forum.

They may be friends on Veapra but the Satyr would not agree to leave the place it calls home. Their nature wouldnt allow it. The Wemic would have to make the decision to leave his friend behind.
