Dots lessons (becomming a WM)
« on: March 09, 2012, 01:38:50 PM »
Though this series of stories we will learn how Dot learned all the skills required in becoming a WM.

Lesson 1 - Intimidate +4

Dot having grown up in the back alleys of Vehl as a lowly street rat. Learned at a young age that in order to survive she would need to be strong. Strong enough to take what she needed to survive. Be it by physical force or by just the right words delivered in the right way. She learned watching others in local taverns and on the streets... the ones who talked loudest rarely would back it up with real results. Which one is more intimidating? The person yelling and puffing his chest screaming in your face.... "IM GONNA BEAT YOUR HEAD IN IF YOU DON'T DO AS I SAY!" or... the person with the blank cold stare who says in a calm almost factual sounding tone.... "I'm gonna beat your head in if you dont do what I say"

This lesson Dot took to heart... she recalls one of her first "Blade for hire" jobs involved collecting a debt from a man in Ft. Wayfare. He owed a few hundred Trues wagering losses at the Ft. Vehl arena. Dot took the job and sought out the man. She found him in Ft. Wayfare and confonted him... he said he had no intention of paying his debt and that the fights were rigged. Dot looked him over... he was a short, balding, chubby man. She placed a hand to the hilt of her sword (Bastard Sword) and simply replied (in a cold emotionless voice). Im bringing your debt back with me to Vehl.... it is up to you to decide how. You can just be a few hundred true lighter, or watch your blood spill out before you as you take your last breath.... and then be a few hundred true lighter. The man gave a loud gulping sound as he swallowed. A very shakey hand holding a coin purse reached out towards Dot, causing the amount of coin inside it to jingle. Dot snatched the coin and left without another word.

// Dot has learned the skill of "intimidate" (at least +4)

Lesson 2 and 3 - Choosing a Bastard Sword & Weapon Focus Bastard Sword

Dot having grown up in the back alleys of Vehl had to beg, steal, and fight for what she needed to survive. She often had dealings with Sentry Vilma. One of the Sentrys in Vehl. Dot would look wide eyed at the larger than normal sword at her side (Bastard Sword). Vilma rarely had to draw her sword in her daily patrols... but when she did she swung it with a skill and grace that suggested she had extensive experience with this larger than normal blade. Dot saw that in many instances the sight of the blade being drawn by Vilma was enough to get people to back down.

Dot scrounged enough True Coin together and eventually bought a simple copper Bastard Sword from the local merchant. It was poorly balanced, not all that sharp and didn't hold an edge worth a darn. However, being made of copper it was significantly lighter. Had it been one made of Iron she probably would not have been able to wield it.

She practiced with the blade often.. hacking away at rats or other things scurrying through the back alleys of Vehl. In time she used the blade to help her get food, sometimes by force. Other times by doing odd jobs like clearing a sewer of rats. Over the years Dot learned to use about any and all manner of weaponry (she has exotic feat and all the others). But the Bastard Sword was always what she relied on when it was important. Hew proficiency with the blade was to the point that she could do more damage than someone who had just picked up the blade for the first time, or even the causal wielder of it.

Though the Years she has owned several Bastard Swords, made of various metals. Copper, Bronze, Iron, and most recently Adamantium. Each of her blades she has chosen to name... typically with some sort of witty name like.. "The Final Say" or "The Last Word" Nearly every blade she also adds a reddish glow. The sight of her blade has made many rethink their next action when said blade was pointed at them.

Lessons on learning Dodge, Mobility, Spring Attack

Dot has learned the value being able to take a beating in the line of work she does. As soon as she could afford one she bought a suit of Copper Full Plate armor from a local metal sundries merchant. Originally she thought she could just stand there and take all that her enemies had to offer then strike them down when she saw an opening. This worked fine on weaker things like wild animals and such. But standing there being a target dummy had too many flaws to it. Dot started to work at being more flexible in her armor, finding ways to flank her targets, roll off an attack and counter attack, or even move from one attacker to another during the fray. These skills took a long time to get down. It takes a great deal of focus.. to not only watch what is attacking you but the others that are about to, or just did. But doing so Dot is able to see where and who to strike next even if it means moving to the target. Watching her fight like this an untrained eye might think it is a very chaotic method. But Dot knows now a moving target is not only harder to hit but more deadly.

Lessons on Expertise & Power Attack... Offensive vs. Defensive Stance
(Power Attack isnt a req. for WM but just play along)

Traveling the lands of Layonara Dot has faced many foes, sometimes by herself and other times she has others fighting with her. She has fought one on one, other times she has to take on a group. It didn't take long to learn that all scenarios couldn't be handled the same way.

The typical fight Dot would just knock her adversary down with a swipe at the legs or a blow to the head (knockdown) and then strike key areas on them (sneak attack). This doesn't work so well when surrounded and being attacked from all sides. Also as she has traveled Dot is finding her opponents are not such pushovers. So her tactics have had to grow and adapt.

Dot gauges each fight now and takes a stance accordingly to how the fight starts, she may even change stances (several times) depending on how it goes. If she is outnumbered she will take a more defensive stance. Focusing on blocking and only taking a shot when she sees a good opening (Expertise). Other fights she takes a neutral stance when  And on some she will take the offensive adding a bit more oompfh to her swings sacrificing accuracy (power attack).

All of this takes place several times in some fights... folks who aren't well trained in fighting tactics might not even notice things as subtle as a weight shift, or different stance. But those who do know can see she knows what she is doing. By being flexible in her stance the outcome of most fights is certain before blades clash.

Dot has met with the master swordsman Vrebel and after asking if he would train her and him seeing Dot take on Misted Village bandits as a test. He has agreed to train her in the ways of a Weapon Master.

What is to come? Stay tuned....

*Dot pulls up a barstool at the Silverbuckle*

Gimme a drink!... I dont care what kind.... so long as its got alcohol in it.

*Dot is heard grumbling about picking up coins only with a blade while she waits for her drink to slide down the bar. she snags the drink and downs it in a gulp*

Keep em commin' !

*she proceeds to keep complaining about good true coin gone to waste because it wouldnt stay balanced on her blade*

*Vrebel enters the Buckle sometime later and sets a few coins down on the bar counter next to Dot and orders an ale for both of them.  The only thing masking the stench of caked on blood and sweat is the scent of pears*

Your lucky I didnt make ya drink yer ale with yer blade too you'd die of thirst.  Oh by the way those coins didnt actually go to waste

*He shows off a small sachel of coins with a grin*

a trip today with Ty Reid thru all of haven mines Dot focused on the instructions given by her teacher. If groups attacked she used expertise and whirlwind until they were down. When looting corpses she picked up coin or items only with her blade... which out of a good 2 dozen tries she was successful maybe 5 times or so. At least twice her blade announced the kill, which at this time means that she "felt" the blade as if it were an extension of her hand

Dot has taken the advice of her teacher (Vrebel) and begun weapon smithing. The work thus far has been more tedious than challenging. Making trips to Lake Alun for the clay that makes the best weapon molds. Also making trips from the Kobold cave in the Silkwoods for Copper, and Tin (now made into Bronze). She had more than enough skill in smelting to make the ingots without fail (thanks to her already being an armor crafter.) She has made Bastard Swords in both Copper and Bronze now. Each made with just the proper balance that suits Dot best. She will show them to Vrebel when they meet next for more training at his home near Castle Mask.

Recently she accompanied Vrabel and a dwarf named Griff into the Rift. Vrebel spent most of the journey observing Dots form (both fighting form and well yeah her "form" too LOL). He would give instructions when he saw she needed to correct something. Over all the trip was smooth and much cobalt, Adamantium and raw diamonds were collected. Dot even managed to loot a few of the fallen using her blade only... she did seem to be getting better at it, compared to when she was first told to do so.

((Vrebel feel free to add anything about the trip if you want))

*During their journey down into the depths of the Rift Vrebel allows Dot to take point so he can monitor her stance, swing, thrusts and battle prowess.  He barks out pointers during battle but for the most part takes mental and written notes on her progress.  The notes in his journal are hastely written and brief as most are scribbled down during battles.*

Good listener...complains too much abrasive at times.

powerful swing but not precise enough.

She uses her arms to swing too much.  Stance is good but not consistent.

She has suprisingly not let her grip go of her hilt since I told her I had a special glove I'd strap on her if she doesnt stop dropping her blade.

Much progress in her sensetivity with her blade as she has let few coins slip off her blade and has balanced maces and other loot on her blade as well.

*Vrebel closes his journal and looks to the future months where he can give her proper training as his war room in Mask.*

Vrebel has Dot working on a new technique after a session of training at the Vehl Arena. He is trying to get Dot to use less pure arm strength and generate power starting at her hips and ending up transferred to her blade. .

Dot showed a basic understanding of the technique but needs to practice it until it becomes second nature to strike in this manor. She is to practice this technique for a month before they move on

Also Dot has shown improving skill in the "touch" of her blade, but Vrebel still wants her to loot her kills with her blade. (this is reflected in her DEX check DC being reduced to 8 when looting a corpse)

Vrebel seemed pleased with Dots progression (she has reached level 19). He has shown her another move to work on, derived off the last one but this time swinging thru in a cross slashing motion instead of ending in a thrusting stab. Again with the energy starting from her hips and transferring out to her blade.

She seemed to show a basic understanding of the strike as she fought off pirates outside Hurm. She also continued to show improved skills in fighting in general... using cover, her overall awareness, and using her whirlwind attack when surrounded.

Dot is seen at a tavern near Haven City drinking heavily and boasting killing an undead horde along with killing two men she calimed were people she had ran into in the past though now they seemed to have become vampires. Her confidence (maybe some arrogance) in her skills with a bastard sword were quite evident to those who were also on the quest.

Dot finally ran into Vrebel. Turns out he was down in The Rift with a crew trying to bring the Al'Noth back into there. He showed Dot another new sword strike. Raising your blade high over head and attempting to slice clear down thru your target. Dot seemed to like the idea of this move... seeing Vrebel use it before cleaving things clean in two.

Vrebel seemed pleased with Dots blade skill progression as they ventured into The Rift that day.

Dot stops by Vrebles place to brag up a recent trip she took to The Great Forest with one of the Stargazers. How just the two of them defeated many of the giants in the forest. She asks him when he is going to teach her more moves, skills etc.

He listens intently to her story, chiming in every so often to ask her about various techniques, swings and stances she may or may not have incorporated into her battles.  He assures her that he has more moves to intruct her on but that she is close, especially after hearing her story.

*Vrebel leads Dot through his foyer back to his war and training room in the back of his home.  There is the familiar pratice dummy shredded and worn from Dot's training sessons.  He unsheathes his greatsword, holds his stance and readies his blade.*

"Alright, new move pay attention, I call it the executioner."

*He swings his blade from a shoulder rest postion in a horizontal axis toward the throat of the dummy just barely knicking the juggular area with the tip of his blade.  He quickly returns to a fighting stance and performs the same move but this time with a back hand swing connecting the dummy in the same vital area.*

"Its an advanced move but I think your ready.  Keep your stance, more weight to your back foot.  Start the move in your legs, twisting your hips counterclockwise, slightly shifting your weight to your front leg and fishing by swinging with your arm across toward the throat of the dummy.  The idea is to sever the juggular vein in the front of the throat and incapacitatin' your opponent.  You dont want to cut too deep as it will affect the return tragectory of your blade.  Your aiming above the breast plate and below the helmet of your opponent at an area that is very small but usually unprotected by most armor."

*He waltzes over to another area of the training room that has four practice dummies facing each other in a circle.  He positions himself in the middle and performs a whirlwind attack using the "executioner" move and slices each of the four dummies juggular areas.*

"When you can do that you've mastered the move."

*He goes back to Dot and gets behind her and tells her to get her bastard sword out and he walks her through the moves in slow motion*

"Main thing is to be quick and accurate and make sure you return your blade back to position in case you miss.  There two types of speed, physical speed which you cant do much about and  efficient speed which is the combination of physical speed, technique and timin'.  Keep up your trainin' and you can improve on yer technique and timin'."

*He motions to the dummy and gives Dot some space*

"Lets see what you got"

Dot watches the instructions
« Reply #18 on: October 18, 2013, 11:03:41 PM »

Dot watches the instructions closely... and when prompted to she moves into positon at the target dummy. The ground work already instilled from Vrebel is evident immediatly. Her stance is perfect her swing motion is every bit as perfect... again evidence of all the training she has gone thru thus far. Her slow motion walk thru of the forhand and back hand swing are good. So she moves in on the dummy and attempts to replicate the strike.

Her distance or "touch" if you will is off. With one swipe she barely misses, another is right on and the next she goes too deep affecting her follow thru. Mildy frustrated she curses but does not stop trying. She continues to swing back and forth across the dummies neck. Slowly she gets the range down. Dot never really used a strike of this manor before. She typically would just thrust her blade deep into her target, slash across it not trying for such precision, or simply try and muscle her way thru armor, muscle, bone... whatever was in the way of her blade. However since her training started with Vrebel he has taught her how to use "touch" and not just pure arm strength. Her work prior to this strike is paying off... she seems to be getting "dialed in" now. Had Vrebel started her training with this move... it may have been a complete disaster.

*she awaits Vrebels instruction or critique of her strikes before continuing on to the whirlwind move, or to keep working at the single target*

*Vrebel watches Dot stoically
« Reply #19 on: October 19, 2013, 03:01:00 PM »

*Vrebel watches Dot stoically as she attempts the highly advanced move.  He's impressed with her stance and swing but does his best not to show it*

"Not bad.  I want you to stop tryin' so hard to hit the juggular.  Concentrate on your opponent and feel your way through the move.  Let your senses take over and trust your instincts.  Your body and mind through yer trainin' know the distance you should be to your opponent and placement of the blade.  Take a deep breath and try again but this time remember to focus on the tip of the blade as an extension of your finger.  Take the shot and focus on the overall presense of your opponent and not his neck.  The rest will follow."

*He takes a seat motioning for her to continue as he unloads some sand bags from a wooden box*
