Falcons, couriers and delivery times
« on: August 23, 2012, 07:46:09 AM »
I was looking for the time it takes to deliver a letter or message from one point to another, but my search hasn't turned up anything. Is there any information available on how much distance a letter/packet can travel per day with various methods (courier on horseback, bird, ...)?

There isn't information written for general times and speeds, but that's partly because it varies from place to place given terrain and resources, and because the means varies, as you noted.

If you want to know how long it will take to send a message between two specific places, ask here, and we'll give you an approximate time for those locations.

It has never been defined, no. It's definitely not instantaneous, even from a mechanical standpoint. We don't particularly have any plans or desire to define the particulars of how fast falcon messages travel. I think it's enough to assume one should allow for a reasonable amount of time to deliver, taking things like distance, ocean crossings and remoteness into account.

From a roleplay viewpoint, it would be good to know a few landmarks, so if a character can consider writing a letter or try something else.

I have a few places that I would like to know a vague time of delivery for RP purposes:

Hlint - Camp of the Wolfswood Rangers (One ocean crossing, target deep within uncivilized territory/secluded, but the Rangers might have something in place if their members need to drop of an important message quickly)

Hlint - Port Hempstead (most likely on land)

Fort Llast - Fiorez City (crossing various borders and nations and oceans, but wartime logistics might be in place for delivering letters back and forth)
