The answer to the question we know...but what exactly are we asking ;)?

This is why you don't hand me Douglass Adams books and expect me to make sense.

Alternately: "To crush your enemy - to see them flee before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women!"

Douglas (one s) Adams, btw - respect for the departed.

Now I would have agreed with 42.....makes sense to me.

But instead my philosphical side kicks in. Leave something behind....no matter how small. A child....a book....a tree....your name carved somewhere even.

Ooo...and

Alternately: "To crush your enemy - to see them flee before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women!"

I too was tempted by the irrefutable logic that is "42," however my "soggy" side got the better of me and I had to go with love. I'd explain why but my philosophical reasoning has no place on Layo. That, and no one asked for it.

I'm fairly certain that crushing your enemies, seeing them driven before you, and hearing the lamentations of their women is, in fact, what is best in life, and not the meaning of life.

42 is winning by far, and that is the main meaning of life, but there are smaller ones, like learning and finding the elusive quad-triangle.
What do you get when you multipy six and nine?

There is no meaning to life. The question derives from the basic human need to rationalize everything that they do. Thus, humans cannot really except the fact that everything has no true meaning, and that life is here simply by coinicidence.

Yeah, I took a philosophy course last year, and I read way too much into it :P

42 isn't the meaning of life. It's the Answer to the QUESTION of Life, the Universe, and Everthing. The question is What is 6 times 9.

The purpose of life is to replicate itself. So go, next generation!

6 times 9 is 54.  The real question is, "What happened to the other twelve?"  Unh! See what I mean?  Makes sense.  Makes scary sense.

Here's another theory on the meaning of life...

On the first day, God created the dog and said: "Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past.  For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years."
The dog said, "That's a long time to be barking.  How about only ten years and I'll give you back the other ten?"
So God agreed.

On the second day, God created the monkey and said: "Entertain people, do tricks, and make them laugh.  For this, I'll give you a twenty-year life span."
The monkey said:  "Monkey tricks for twenty years?  That's a pretty long time to perform.  How about I give you back ten like the dog did?"
And God agreed.

On the third day, God created the cow and said: "You must go into the field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have calves, and give milk to support the farmer's family.  For this, I will give you a life span of sixty years."
The cow said, "That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty years.  How about twenty and I'll give back the other forty?"
And God agreed again.

On the fourth day, God created man and said, "Eat, sleep, play, marry and enjoy your life.  For this, I'll give you twenty years."
But man said, "Only twenty years?  Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?"
"Okay," said God, "You asked for it."

So that is why the first twenty years we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves.  For the next forty years we slave in the sun to support our family.  For the next ten years, we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren.  And for the last ten years, we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.

I say it is to be loved or find love.  One way or another, every one has been loved.  Now ture love that is very rare, finding true love is even harder.
