Either there's a very obvious solution that is going right over my head, or no one has ever tried to use the one in the Hlint crafting house. It's impossible to use due to the fact that NWN insists upon changing your camera angle to directly in front of the part you're trying to modify. That puts the camera into the wall, behind the loom, which obscures your view of you, so you can't see the changes that you're making.

after clicking on the loom but before you pik what you want to change press a or d to turn your characters back to the loom. Then you can see what your doing.

It's actually much simpler than that. You don't have to click on the loom to customize something. Just need to be near one of the different devices and then right click on yourself to do the normal customizing menus. You simply need to make sure you are close to the right device. Loom for clothes, anvil for weapons and metal armours, fletchers table for bows and so on.
