The normal toolset without any added haks only got 3 colors for the blades. Bronze, silverish and gold.

Short answer: Because weapons don't work in the same way as armor and clothing.
Longer answer: for armor, clothing and helmets, the coloration is handled through layered textures that can be tinted dynamically. With weapons and anything else that can be "held" the different appearances are really different models. As such, we'd need one model per weapon appearance per color. As there are 176 colors I believe, dozens of weapons and usually several appearances for each weapon, we'd have to make thousands of new models to accommodate dying them.
So, this just isn't going to happen.

Just out of curiosity Dorg, could you give me a figure on how many CNR weapon models / appearances there are presently?  I am just curious what a ball park figure would be...

Well, that's kind of difficult to do without doing some digging.
In terms of base weapon models, consider that there's one for each base weapon type: dagger, quarterstaff, longsword, greatsword, battleaxe, etc.
That in itself is probably 10-12-ish weapon types.
Each weapon type then generally has anywhere from 2-15 (guessing on the upper number) different physical apppearances...maybe more, maybe less, averaging somewhere in the middle there.
That's already, potentially 120 weapon models, assuming an average of 10 variations each.
However, each weapon has 3 parts to it, a "top", "middle" and "bottom" each of which can be selected independently from the other, so now we're up to 360 models available to make weapon appearances, using the same assumptions above.
Now, if we were to make one color variation for each of those parts in each possible color, we're now at over 63,000 models.
      How's that for a ballpark?  :)
