Death system
« on: January 27, 2006, 11:46:58 pm »
I have been thinking about the death sistem and I think it is a bit too random. When your character dies, he has a 1%chance per level to get a death token. This means that some lucky characters may die a lot but still not get any DT, and unlucky characters might die once or twice but get the death token. My suggestion would be that after your character died x times (which would get lower depending on the level) you would get a DT. I think it would make it more fare, but it is just a suggestion from a humble player   :D .

Death Tokens (now known as Soul Threads) are not currently being handed out due to the results of an ECDQ. The Soul Mother and Harvester of Souls are currently taking a much-deserved vacation, and are sipping fruity drinks out of coconuts on a sandy beach of a small, unknown island off the coast of Dregar.
Never fear though...they'll return eventually and start randomly plucking away at the souls of those who draw their interest. ;)
In seriousness, having a non-random death system essentially gives every character a counter, and takes some of the fear away from death. To statistically work out to approximately the same DT chance, the number of deaths required to lose a Soul Thread would have tobe fairly high...probably higher than what a reasonable number of deaths would be for a given level. And then what would happen when the character leveled? Say a character at a given level had to die 40 times before an ST was taken, and that character hit 39 deaths right before leveling. At the new level the character would have to die "only" 35 times to lose an ST. Would the counter reset upon levelling? Or would the next death upon leveling be an automatic ST? Neither way is really fair and could easily be exploited.
By having it random, there's always a chance that your character will attract the attention of the Soul Mother and lose a small part of himself/herself through dying. True, there will be some who are unlucky, but overall, the averages work out. To look at the statistics of who has reached 10 DT's/ST's and permed, you'd see that most of these characters had very high death counts.
There should be a fear of dying EVERY time, not just some times.

What is the average level that characters reach before perm death?

That depends on how lucky you are with your saves versus getting a ST, and of course, how often you die.

Some people permadied even below level 10, others are epic and have only like 2 or 3 ST's...

 Yep, it's very very random.

The people who permadied before Level 10 died over 150 times.

*grins* Let me rephrase that. On average, does anyone know at what level characters get their tenth DT on? Before the Soul Mother went on a holiday of course.

There is no 'average' level, it totally depends on the player and their tactics. If a character dies 75 times or more there is a good chance they will perm out. If they die less than that they could perm out as well (luck of the roll), but I have also seen people with 100 deaths still not perm'd.  Play smart and die less often and one will not perm out.

I'm just curious to know how long the average character lasts in Layonara.

Do most people just get bored of characters and abandon them before they reach epic levels or do they get 10 DTs and that's why there aren't too many epic level characters around?

There are characters who have been around for years who haven't made epic but which are still active. There are characters who were abandoned by 12th level or less. There are characters who have permed (now un-permed) before level 10. There are people who started out playing here, decided they didn't like it and left.
There are about a dozen characters that are now officially Epic. There are maybe about the same number who are elligible and/or in the process of becoming epic. It takes a player a minimum of one year to be considered for Epic statua, which is also subject to Leanthar's discretion.
So really, it's hard to give averages.

Yeah, you're right, probably it wouldn't work. Still I think that maybe there could be a less random death system. Anyway, about playing smart, it is true, but not always like that. I got 2 DTs trying to give my teammate a chance to escape the monsters (anyway, they also died  :(  ) I could have run, but then that would not be role-play.  You have to make a neutral paladin class (just joking).
