Ask A Gamemaster / 18 GMs = one CDQ?
« on: April 14, 2010, 08:26:27 am »
18 quest GMs and one CDQ on the calendar for the remainder of the month??

Not complaining but the number of quests on the calendar was one of the big things that attracted me to Layo years ago. Can't help but think having only one CDQ (which is relevant to only a few PCs) on the calendar isn't going to entice many new (or old ones for that matter) players.

Is there something we can do, as players or characters, to help/assist the GM group?

Rumour Has It / An ornate carriage (2) ...
« on: January 09, 2010, 11:18:49 pm »
[SIZE=13]An open carriage rolls slowly across the cobbled streets of Vehl's dock district. The driver, a lean man of middling years, his iron grey hair pulled back into a short, neat pony tail. A man not seen in public for many years. The flash and sparkle of diamond and emerald can be seen on a multitude of rings, necklace, armbands, belt, brooch, earring and more. The showy jewellery is in stark contrast to the two entirely plain and unadorned shortswords sheathed at his hip. Whispers first, then growing crowds follow the carriage's passing.

From the rear of the carriage, four maidens (fair of face and form) reach into a large chest and draw forth handfuls of shining gold. What is brighter, their gay laughter or the shimmer and shine of the Queen's true into outstretched arms, who can say?

A child, thin with hunger and despair is lifted up towards the man in the carriage. The child's small body is covered with bruises and open sores, the harsh signs of neglect and disease. The driver, his beneficent smile beaming forth, reaches down a hand towards the child and strokes his cheek. At his soft touch, miraculously the child's body glows with new health and vitality. The driver of the carriage presses a large gold coin into the boy's hand as the carriage rolls on and the boy is carried away in the arms of the gathered crowd.

Rumour Has It / A balmy evening in Vehl ...

"Follow the cups ... keep yer eye on the cups Sir"

"Just one true ... pick the cup and double yer coin ... easy as that Sir it is"

*swish swish, fast moving hands*

"That's it Sir ... I'll go slow as you like, I like the look of you I do, Yessir"

*lifts one of the three upside-down cups to reveal a small nut*

[a conspiratorial whisper] "There you are Sir, thought I'd just give you another quick peek in case you’d lost it"

*swish swish, fast moving hands*

"Whenever you're ready now Sir ... pick your cup and double your money"

*point*

*cup overturned to reveal ... nothing*

"Aaaah, I really thought you had it then Sir ... kind of lost track of it myself I did. Better luck next time Sir ..."

~oOo~

Later in the evening.

~oOo~

"'Ello lads. I got your coin here I do. Of course I do. You can trust ol' Markay, safe as houses I is. Not a bad night it was in the end. Two coins fer ev'ry ten for you fine gentlemen. Here you is."

*a hand takes the offered coin purse. The flash of a red sleeve.*

"It feels light on Markay"

[injured tone]"Whaddya mean Sir? Fair as a judge I is, no way would I be so stupid as to try to cheat ye from yer coins. No way Sirs!"

"Best you don't Markay, a word for the wise. The boss is back and if your purse is light it ain't just you we'll come after. You remember how it was before he went away? It'll be you ... your woman ... your pretty lil' 'uns ... your mother, your father ... everyone and anyone you ever once even graced with yer smile ... and it won't be quick either."

Rumour Has It / An ornate carriage ...
« on: December 31, 2009, 09:20:04 pm »
[SIZE=13]The ornate carriage rolls slowly across the cobbled streets of Vehl's dock district. The two roan mares that draw the carriage walk with a high step, as if reluctant to have their hooves rest overlong in the reeking refuse of the thoroughfare. At the chime of a tinkling bell from within the carriage's shadowed interior, barely audible over the clip clop of hooves, the carriage driver gives a brief flick of the reins, signaling for the horses to come to a stop. The driver's narrowed gaze and a demeanor that promises unpleasantness for those who dare draw near keeps even the most desperate of beggars from approaching too closely.

A slight shift of the curtain at one of the carriage windows, just not quite enough to illuminate the interior. The unseen occupant of the carriage peruses the sights of the street.

The grifters. The beggars. The thin-limbed and hard-eyed urchins. The thugs. Thieves. Scoundrels. The hopeless. The pitiful and the pitiless. The predators and their prey.

The chime of the bell. The curtain shifts closed again. The carriage rolls on towards another destination.

That's it. Don't hold back. Screaming is okay. That's gotta hurt plenty, no-one could deny that. I ain't gonna think less of you. Uh uh, no way. There really is no shame in those tears friend. Sheesh, I'd reckon not one man in a hun'nerd could take that and not scream at least a little. So, you go right ahead, let it all out. That's it. Good boy.

*a lengthy pause*

You think my babies screamed at the end? I reckon they must've. As I said, in my experience there ain't none too many that don't ... and certainly not kids. They scream quicker and louder than most I find. What do they care about tryin' to be brave and hold it all in? Makes you wonder if they ain't truly got more sense than the rest of us. Recognising the inevitable and just letting go, know what I mean?

*snip*

Hey, don't you go anywhere, wake up! It's not going to be that easy

*laughs in a good natured manner*

We're not finished yet cheeky monkey.

*a soft incantation, healing magic flows, a soft groan*

You're back with us again? Excellent. I wasn't paying attention there and almost lost you. Sorry about that friend. Sheesh, you sure are a bleeder ain't you? What was I saying again? Yeah, that's right, kids. I like kids. I reckon they got a lot to teach folks like me. Some real good lessons if you're payin' attention. How many kids you got fella? Three? Same as me! Whaddya know. I only saw the one of them back at the road. The other two must've run off when I hit you with that spell. Now, don't fuss none, there's a town not too far from here. I reckon they'll most likely find their way there before dark even. They'll be fine. Plenty of kids grow up with no daddy. Kids are adaptable, ain't they? There ya go. More proof that those kids are onto something we've all forgotten. Another lesson.

*snip*

Well, I reckon you're just about your end. I swear, I thought you and I would be chattin' for hours, you bein' a big strong fella an' all.

*a little shrug*

Just goes to show, whaddya know?

*laughs*

That rhymed! I should be a minstrel ... well, you know, if I wasn't busy doing this...

Just for Fun / Praise for Dorg
« on: November 06, 2009, 07:49:37 pm »
Dorganath, our friendly administrator, can always be found
hard at work in these forums. Dorg works independently, without
wasting valuable time resorting to pettiness. Dorg never
thinks twice about assisting fellow forum members, and he always
finishes given projects on time. Often he takes extended
measures to complete his promises, sometimes skipping healthy
breaks. Dorg is a dedicated individual who has absolutely no
vanity in spite of his high accomplishments and profound
knowledge in his field. I firmly believe that Dorg can be
classed as a high-calibre contributor, the type that cannot be
dispensed with. Consequently, I truly recommend that Dorg be
promoted to Supreme Leader of Layonara, and a proposal will be
executed as soon as possible.

Character Library / Simple Simon
« on: September 24, 2009, 12:24:05 am »
Core information

Simon Sollis (Simple Simon)
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Class: Fighter
Alignment: Lawful Good
Age: 20
Deity: None
Stats: Whatever you want but obviously meant to be very low wis/int and high str.

Description

The man before you stands close to six and a half feet tall. Guileless blue eyes beam forth from a smiling face. His expression is one of wonder, more suited to a child's face than a man full grown. A bull neck meets sloping shoulders of considerable breadth. The bottom of a large and ragged scar can be seen extending up and into his curly blonde hair.

Bio

Hullo. Mah name is Simon ... Simon Sollis. Same name as mah daddy, 'cept his name weren't no Simon, it were Pay-tel *guffaws* I mean his last name! *guffaws* Nobody calls me Simon Sollis anyways, nope uh huh, most folks call me Simple Simon. *guffaws*

*listens a moment to the question*

These 'ere folks at this 'ere farm are bein' real kind to Simon. Theys let me stay and ah do real good on mah farm chores. Strong as an ox ah is! *guffaws, pounds on his chest*

They ain't mah daddy an' mammy, uh huh. Mah daddy says after ah gone tousle wit' that horse *almost subconsciously his hand strays up and pulls a lock of hair over the scar across his forehead* that he no need no simple boy hangin' 'round eatin' all his food! *guffaws, not even a hint of sadness or bitterness* Cain't say ah blame him none, ah eats like a horse ah do! *guffaws*

*listens a moment to the question*

Uh huh, all sorts of stuff I do! Ah is real good at pullin' the plough when Betsy stood on that stone, uh huh. Ah can chop wood real good. Ummmmm, I can carry all sorts o' heavy stuff ah can. I done reckon I be the strongest from 'ere to Bydell! *motions with his hand towards the distant castle, it being a mere smudge on the horizon*

*listens a moment to the question*

No suh, ah done no like hittin' no-body *shakes his head ponderously* Why ah hit some folks iff'n they ain't done no harm by me an' mine? That ain't right. Iff'n they be baddies, sure ah'll give 'em a wallopin' *nods his head towards a large cudgel leaning up against the barn wall, well within easy reach* Ah reckon they be askin' for it then! Ah be real good at wallopin' too! *guffaws*

*listens a moment to the question*

No suh, ah ain't never 'eard o' none o' them. Drachs? *spits out the obviously unfamiliar word* They real baddies you say? Well, ah reckon ah better help, then, uh huh *guffaws* Sounds like you folks need a hand ah reckon.

*And without further ado, Simple Simon Sollis walked away from the life he knew, uh huh.*

Roleplaying / Two Pet Hates
« on: September 17, 2009, 06:25:44 am »
Okay, maybe hate is too strong a word. The word 'hate' implies a depth of feeling I normally reserve for those things that peeve me in real life, not my chosen leisure activity.

Let's instead call these two pet niggles. Yeah, that sounds better. Less vitriolic by far. Now that I actually sit down to write about it, if it were not for the fact that Mrs Pseudo was watching Glee on TV and there is not much else for me to do, I probably wouldn't even bother. That said,

1.
Please no forced emotes/feelings in character descriptions! Forced emotes have been addressed ad nauseum elsewhere for general roleplay but not (to my knowledge) for character descriptions, I am talking about the info we can read if we right-click (option-click) on your character.

You don't make me feel uncomfortable!

I don't think your gaze pierces me to the very depths of my soul!

Etc, etc.

In short, you don't make me feel anyhting, I decide what my character feels. How 'bout you just provide an objective narrative that describes what I am seeing and I'll fill in the subjective stuff?!?

2.
Helmets
Cowls
Hoods
Veils
Scarves
Niqaabs
Other

So you've chosen to take up the roleplay challenge of a dark elven (half-orc, tiefling, etc) character. Good for you. A really interesting dark history, century upon century of brutality, cruelty, conniving and treachery. All interesting stuff. Hey, lets not forget those pretty nifty mechanical benefits but, of course, you have the compromise of being hated and mistrusted across the world to balance those.

What's your point, you ask?

Be realistic with what another PC would be able to see of you under your all-concealing helmet, hood, veil, etc!! If you can see with enough clarity to fight/spot/listen/bluff/concentrate/search/etc without penalty from the depths of your face covering - there is a fair chance I can see enough of your face to determine skin colour, glowing red eyes, etc!

I will accept my character cannot see ANYTHING of your face (hands/neck/etc) if and when I can see your roleplay reflect that the facial swaddling is so extremely thorough that you are stumbling about the place, three-quarters deaf and blind.

You're playing a dark-elf. Accept the roleplay difficulties that come along with the mechanical benefits. A face/race obscuring hood panacea seems, to me at least, a bit of a copout.

PS. This is not directed at anyone in particular.  :)

Glee is over, i'm off!

Seeking employment? ... hold on, I've already said that up there.

Probably easiest if you just go and look here!

This player event quest will be to fill a role as security/bouncer/heavy at the One Eyed Harpy in Vehl. There will, of course, be tests of a cruel and unusual nature to determine suitability.

House in Krandor (and all within) - to go to Trouble Tempest, on the proviso he continues to be an annoying neighbor for Connor.

Guildhouse in Vehl (and all within) - to go to Duchess. Likewise, if she is capable of holding power amongst the factions then good luck to her I say.

Every other item, including house in Haft Lake, all gold in the bank, all debts receivable and all items on my possession at the time of demise, to go to Sala Salvorre for the raising of any and all children.

Ask A Gamemaster / Character idea: Possible?
« on: August 30, 2009, 07:07:13 am »
Would it be possible to submit for a character with a level split of 1/19 if it were possible to substantiate that there was absolutely no mechanical advantage in that single level (lower HPs, worse saving throws, less skill points)?

I have an idea for a character that hates magic (seeing at as a great semi-sentient evil) where I would love to make his first lvl that of sorcerer before going monk the rest of the way. I foresee great potential in an element of self-loathing for this character's RP if he were allowed to take a level of sorcerer (of course on the condition he NEVER cast a spell nor summoned a familiar nor used a magical item requiring some levels in an arcane class).
