Layonara Server / System Failure, Character Corruption« on: December 06, 2015, 12:34:37 pm »
Hello all,I wish I was posting better news but there has been an issue as you know recently with the system acting quirky and some characters going missing and I've finally figured out why and the consequences. The servers file system was filling up dramatically with some rogue logs that would get exponentially bigger and then it would get filled to capacity. This caused the server to not save characters properly as there was no more room on the drive. I've corrected this issue but the issue is going to be a headache for some. The following characters are corrupted and there are no reasonable backups for them, the backup system overwrote both their daily backup and weekly backups with the corrupt file and I have no other known backups. It's a shame the weekly backup ran just a few hours before I realized there was a serious filesystem problem.

Rumour Has It / WANTED: Thieves to be tracked down« on: February 01, 2013, 05:20:43 am »
*Tralek posts a notice on the bountyhunter and work-for-hire boards around Layonara*
WANTED: I, Tralek Rivarmar, am hereby seeking an able-bodied group to track down the thieves who stole a shipment of goods from me and Vrebel. I had a courier in route to the Saddlebag shop in Haven and thieves came upon him and killed my courier and stole the goods. The group is brazen enough because they tatooed the forehead of my courier with a mark, the mark of a scarab with a tiny beetle. I have visited the corpse of the courier and investigated the scene. The courier appears to have been killed by a large insect. I believe from the tatoo and the types of lacerations, that the group who perpitrated this belongs to a Cult that I experienced a long while ago out near the roughlands. Seek them out and deal with them and any of my treasure still found upon them is yours as a reward. Be careful, because they may lay in waiting. I just want to repair the name of Rivarmar and let others know that I, nor my couriers, will not be messed with. Come to my home at 207 Lor, Outskirts of Castle Mask, and I will give you more detailed information and directions. Tralek //I have left a Treasure Map at my house at 207 Castle Mask. The door is unlocked and I left the map in the foyer chest labled "Orders 3". This will require an experienced group probably in a level 20+ range. Good luck! Layonara Server / Bonus XP Week....ish« on: December 17, 2012, 11:34:38 pm »
Do I have your attention? *grins*
It's time again for one of our famous bonus XP events. Here's the details:
Bear in mind it is the holidays, and GM availability will be subject to other obligations first, but I've gotten assurances from at least some of our GMs for scheduled and impromptu events and the like. Rewards for RP are rated higher than combat, so remember to make time for it. There have been several new characters lately from new and old players alike, so hopefully there will be some good opportunities for all. Old faces are always good as well, of course. Make something happen! The following users thanked this post: LordCove

Layonara Server / World Policy Update -- Sept. 19, 2011« on: September 19, 2011, 10:39:48 pm »
Greetings Layonara Community,
As we have done now and then through the years, we are bringing some changes to Layonara. Some of these are significant. Others are simple clarifications of what already exists. Regardless of the case, from this point forward, a new set of policies and conventions will be in place for all, from the new player on up to the GM team. These changes have come after a good deal of consideration, proposal, discussion and refinement over the course of several months. They take into account those things that we, as a community, do well and those things that we, as a community, could do better. The full details of all these things are too much to list here, but they will either be covered with some detail elsewhere or be evident in the way things are done by the GM team. Don't worry; the changes are all aimed at a more positive experience for everyone. What I will do here is summarize these changes and then offer an agreement between the community-at-large and the GM team. The latter is offered because in order for this all to work, it requires cooperation between everyone, whether one is “just a player” or our most experienced GM. Afterall, we're all working toward the same goal: a rich and enjoyable experience for everyone. Summary of Changes: As mentioned above, the details of all the changes are too numerous to list here, and much of them get into administrative details. To list the major changes in summary:
In order for everything to work well, we all need a reminder that there is a need for cooperation between both players and GMs. Without it, there is nothing but difficulty, and anyone who has been around here long enough has probably witnessed the occasional period of problems and tension. We recognize these will never be truly eradicated, but we can all take steps to minimize them and work more constructively when problems do arise. In that spirit, I offer the following agreement to be held between players and GMs. Players agree to...
In understanding our various differences, let us also remember that each of us is only human. The above agreement is a goal, and regardless of which side we're on, no one expects perfection. We do, however, request that everyone keeps these things in mind when playing here. Most of us here are adults. Let's remember to act like adults. Speak to other players. Work out differences person-to-person, and ask for help if there are problems doing so. The “Clean Slate” Under the GM section of the agreement, the concept of a “clean slate” was mentioned. By way of explaining this, it is necessary to mention the oft-misunderstood “Player Watch List”. Many players may not know if this list, while others may have the wrong idea of it. The Player Watch list is simply that...a list of players to watch. A player may get onto the list in several ways, which can be summarized as bad or questionable behavior. Such behavior can take many forms, whether it is a complaint by another player, minor rule violations or any matter that seems of concern. We use this as a communication tool between the entire GM team, such that we may all know of issues that may require a closer eye on a player in order that they do not cause problems for others through such behavior as we may document. A player will remain on the watch list for a period of six (6) months, after which time, the thread will be moved to an “inactive” archive, assuming no further issues during that time. If necessary, an archived thread may be made active again if there are repeated issues for a given player. These threads help us determine when administrative action or more direct intervention may be necessary, and they serve as long term documentation. It bears stating, unequivocally, that the Player Watch List is not a list of people that the GM team “does not like.” This is actually quite far from the truth. It should also be said that just because someone is on the watch list does not mean the player is in trouble. In order to illustrate a little better what the list is and isn't, here are a few examples of why someone might appear on the list:
To enact the “clean slate”, from this point forward, any and all active Player Watch List threads are now archived permanently. Any past incidents or disciplinary actions, except for permanent bannings of course, are hereby forgiven and completely in the past. If a player who has been the subject of one or more Player Watch List posts in the past has a new incident worthy of the Player Watch List, such incidents will be considered new, and past incidents will not be taken into account. Repeated incidents after this point will, of course, be handled as we have in the past, with each thread serving as a historical record for future reference. This gives everyone who may have come in conflict with server rules in the past or who may have caused difficulties for other players to start fresh and without bias. It is our hope that in this environment, people will seize this opportunity to be better members of the community as a whole and remember that this is not just a single-player game and that our actions affect other players, either directly or indirectly. So let's get started! Without further ceremony or description, let's all start moving forward and continue making Layonara the best environment for RP and enjoyment it can be. For good or ill, we've all contributed to what Layonara is today. As we go on, we will continue to shape it. Let's make it good! The following users thanked this post: LordCove

General Discussion / Resigning as GM« on: May 31, 2011, 04:40:17 am »
It is time for me to hand my GM batch to another.
The plot is nearing its end and the remaining parts are in very capable hands. So, after more years than I care to count I am resigning from my position as GM in Layonara's amazing Team of GMs. Before I move on to being 'just' a player I have one thing I would like to ask all you players out there: At times on quests where you feel wronged or feel that the outcome was not fair, please try to remember why the GMs are here. They are here to make this world around your characters a living and breathing entity that provides you with entertainment and fun. That is the basic idea. So, instead of taking the fight to the GM and/or the Team, try to consider whether the incident in question is one that your character might deal with in an IC fashion - perhaps that was the intent of the GM in the first place. Like you, GMs are people and people will walk away if you rattle them enough. After all, they are not acting GMs for their own sake, but for the sake of others. This was not based on a recent episode or a current situation in game. Please consider this a plea that you might consider in the future. I have seen it happen too many times over the years and it simply burns people out, which ends up making this place less colourful and alive. Finally, I wish you all the very best of luck and hope that many of you will continue to contribute to this magical place that is Layonara. For me the time has come to move on, although I will probably be around with Kobal now and then. Kind regards, Harlas The following users thanked this post: LordCove

General Discussion / Stepping Down from GM'ing« on: February 27, 2010, 12:45:15 am »
Well folks, it has come that time for me to step down from being a GM. Thanks to L and the team for allowing me the opportunity to be a part of the team.
I have been on this server for over five years now and GM'ed for the last year or so of it between deployments. It was definitely interesting to see how the server operated behind the curtain. I appreciate all the fun that I had while serving the server. I enjoyed my time helping players, running impromptu quests (my favorite by far), and bringing the world alive by possessing NPCs (especially animals), changing spawns, and keeping players on their toes. There are truly fantastic RP'ers in our community and it is constant. There is almost always someone RPing in some form or fashion all of the time. There are different styles and different levels, thank you for the education from that side of the field. Thanks again, twidget The following users thanked this post: LordCove

Rumour Has It / An ornate carriage (2) ...« on: January 09, 2010, 11:18:49 pm »
An open carriage rolls slowly across the cobbled streets of Vehl's dock district. The driver, a lean man of middling years, his iron grey hair pulled back into a short, neat pony tail. A man not seen in public for many years. The flash and sparkle of diamond and emerald can be seen on a multitude of rings, necklace, armbands, belt, brooch, earring and more. The showy jewellery is in stark contrast to the two entirely plain and unadorned shortswords sheathed at his hip. Whispers first, then growing crowds follow the carriage's passing.
From the rear of the carriage, four maidens (fair of face and form) reach into a large chest and draw forth handfuls of shining gold. What is brighter, their gay laughter or the shimmer and shine of the Queen's true into outstretched arms, who can say? A child, thin with hunger and despair is lifted up towards the man in the carriage. The child's small body is covered with bruises and open sores, the harsh signs of neglect and disease. The driver, his beneficent smile beaming forth, reaches down a hand towards the child and strokes his cheek. At his soft touch, miraculously the child's body glows with new health and vitality. The driver of the carriage presses a large gold coin into the boy's hand as the carriage rolls on and the boy is carried away in the arms of the gathered crowd. "Arkolio has returned! General Discussion / What I like about Layonara« on: December 09, 2009, 02:00:07 pm »
Er, first of all, apologies to all of you folks out there who are working on the MMO and have put so much time and effort into it, but...
Duchess was on her way to Dalanther to meet up with some others, and tooko the boat to Hurm, with her horse, as usual. When she disembarked, she could not ride her horse past the captain, so she dismounted and tried to walk the horse past. No luck. She tried a few times, and a few other options, when suddenly, her horse started to sway on her legs and looked really unwell (seen as a series of "talk" messages" from the horse). Duchess gave the horse some water to try to settle her, but she quickly threw it all back up again. She tried various things until eventually her horse felt well enough to travel again. And this is what I really like about Layonara and what makes it so special!! Lord Cove had come on, seen me travelling, and took an impromptu decision to throw in some rp for me and my horse - fantastic (once I got over the shock of seeing the horse objecting to move and reacting tot he voyage). I really, really enjoyed this diversion and even though I was going to meet some other people, it was great fun and a great change from normal events. Thanks LC and kudos to you for the idea. Rumour Has It / A Madman sings at the Docks of Hempstead« on: November 27, 2009, 06:26:17 pm »
*A strange man dressed in tuxedo, executioner's mask and feathered hat wails forth a tempest of song from the shores of Hempstead. He sings of death, destruction, courage, and in facing the storm. He sings to the sea monsters and dead drowned gods of old, the elves of the deep and the very barnacles clinging tot he husks of shattered ships. Persevere. Endure. Fight! His fingers spark into a magical fire across the fretboard as he frantically pumps out chords of discord, masterfully bringing a sense of godlike to the impending, looming doom of what is to come. Between sets he urges the crowds to run, flee... the second wav is coming. Go inland, climb the mountains and wait it out. And for those with will, stay to face the carnage that is to come. Raise arms and battle these beasts of the sea. Krakken, Aboleth, dread beings long forgotten beneath the waves. They come for us all, meet them. Slay them! A few may recognize him as one of the number who evacuated many citizens in the first wave, and who in a fit of madness, tied himself to a palm tree to meet the first wave of the tsunami.*

The Dragon Storm Campaign / Back On The Ledge Over Haven After "How Far Does A Dragon Fall?"« on: November 17, 2009, 11:36:43 pm »
After the visit to Kuhl, Argali visits the ledge overlooking Haven once more. She discusses the events with whomever went, or those who were unable to attend but would like to know more.
"Well, it zeems Argali's idle [POST=1467112]zpeculation[/POST] was just that. The Bastion did not die from the Dragon Poizon. He died frrom the wounds inflicted by the Tarrnished Death. Zis iz the drragon, alzo known as the Ractrafieroz. He was the one Argali [POST=1466522]mentions[/POST] who had Brrenuth laid siege to by the giants to ask who iz opening the Path of the Claw. "As many zuspected after the visit to the Deepening Dark, the Shadrixkayl has been in league with the Cult of the Green Dragon. But not just that, the Shadrixkayl is in partnerzhip with the Ractrafieroz, and togetherr they werre in league with the Cult. "Zis included the Ractrafieroz brreaking down the gates of Westgate for the Cult, which iz cauzing the final fall of Kuhl." She pauses to allow the gravity of this to sink in. "Yes, drragons helping the Green Drragon Cult, the verry zame Cult who iz poizoning and enzlaving otherr drragons." She furrows her brow and rubs her temples in response to this seeming grand act of betrayal. "The stakes to commit zuch an atrrocity must be high, no? "And indeed, it zeems they werre. Farr higherr then many of us arre apprreciating. Forr what would they do zuch a thing? The Tearr of Orrn, no less." She pauses again to allow the gravity of that to sink in or perhaps explain the implications(1). "However, the return of the Tearr of Orn to Fisterion zeemingly brroke the barrgain between the Cult and these two drragons. And as we have learnt, drragons do not like to have theirr bargains brroken. The attack on Lerrigard by the Snowtooth attests to that. Zo, in retaliation for the Cult being unable to zupply the Tearr of Orrn, Ractrafieroz attacks and kills the Bastion." She shakes her head at the machinations and acts of skullduggery. She then takes a slow breath. "And who do we have to thank forr zis inforrmation?" She grits her teeth despite herself, before answering. "The Black Wizarrds, it would zeem. And, and not only that, it zeems they arre keeping trrack of the numberr of times they have helped us(2), and at the very least it would zeem they conziderr us in theirr debt, orr worrse, perrhaps even allies." (1) for those who don't know, she explains the Tear of Orn is one of a pair of scrying devices. Orn's Tear allows the holder to scry across the lands. Orn's Tear is "traditionally" held by Fisterion and was stolen from him and used by the Cult to track down dragons to poison and enslave. It was subsequently returned to Fisterion after the attack on Molvaren's castle (but only just). Its partner, Ausir's Tear, blocks such scrying. Ausir's Tear is "traditionally" held by Shadrixkayl. This distributed ownership helps maintain the balance of power between Fisterion and Shadrixkayl, who are rivals. It was suspected that the Cult has had access to Ausir's Tear, and if Shadrixkayl has indeed been in league with the Cult, this would seem to be confirmed. (2) if asked how the Black Wizards have helped, she says they take credit for showing us the way to Shadrixkayl, and for this latest bit of information. She points out that it has been suspected that the Black Wizards were behind the Cult, or allowed them use of their Bloodpool of the creation of the half-dragons, but these suspicions have so far been unsubstantiated. The following users thanked this post: LordCove

General Discussion / What would you like from a world leader?« on: September 10, 2009, 04:28:10 am »
As my playtime has sadly been decreasing over the course of the last few months and doesn't really seem to be changing right away I find myself wondering what people would want from me as a world leader, or just from a world leader in general.
The reason is of course that with limited playtime I would like to make as much of the time I have as possible, and traveling with the same people all the time isn't really the best way of getting people in touch with Storold as a world leader. The requirements listen in the forums and on LORE wont really be a problem for me to fulfil, unless I loose my internet connection or something like that I will probably still be above five hours a week, and nowhere close to the five hours a month. But... I would like to know what the player base would like to see more of and try to focus my efforts on those things when I have the time to play rather than spending my time idling or grinding when I am online. So I hope that people will speak up about their view of what a world leader should spend his or her time on. The following users thanked this post: LordCove
