General Discussion / Pest Control postponed
« on: December 13, 2008, 04:20:18 pm »
Sorry you not so do gooders out there but a sudden weather change has played havok with my head.  Past experience is that this does not make for a lucent DM.

I will find another time to run this - perhaps the 26th of Dec during the day.

 Sorry for any inconvenience

General Discussion / Taking a Break
« on: September 08, 2008, 07:56:30 pm »
Posting here for general information

I will be taking a bit of a break from Layo as both a player and a GM for the next two months.

Layo has begun to take on the feel of a second job not a hobby or pass time.

This combined with a not so wonderful summer at my REAL job has left me tired, cranky and stressed.  I need time to recharge.

As of now, I have not decided if my GM break is temporary or permanant. I'll revisit that in November.

I will still be around to finish up a few things such as breaking in the new character approvers and planning/writing/scheduling and hopefully running the WL I have signed on for.

My presence in game and on the forums will likely be scarce for the first little bit.  My new computer will allow me to check out some other games and hopefully re-kindle something.

I'll still be on from time to time - but as my character just like any other player - not as Nova or Minerva.

 Cheers

 Minerva.

Layonara Server / Can't Connect Today/Last Night (or laggy)
« on: August 30, 2008, 10:45:59 am »
There are a few people reporting that they could not connect to the server last night and a few are still reporting that for today. I have also seen reports of the server being laggy.

 A few things.

 1) The company hosting the servers had problems yesterday with their core router. They sent me an email at 5:59pm stating they would be doing emergency repairs on their core router at 6pm. Sadly I did not check my emails until early this morning so I did not know this was happening and could not give you any updates. Sorry about that.
 2) It seems that their emergency maintenance took quite a long time (at least 30 minutes) but the servers are up now.
 3) I have restarted the world servers so the lag should be cleared. I don't know why they would be laggy due to the down time that the company caused but perhaps they did, I rebooted them just to be safe. This should cure the overly laggy issue (see #4 below though).
 4) I don't know what is going on with the some of you not being able to connect to the servers via gamespy or via direct connect. I am able to direct connect just fine (just did a few minutes ago). Currently there are 17 players online (after the server reboot). I am thinking that perhaps the company did something that is causing DNS to update across the internet (though our server IPs remain the same--so perhaps something on their router). If this is the case it will take a while for the information to propagate to the world (no more than 72 hours and probably less than 24 hours--of which it has been at least 12 now)....if this is the problem. I am not sure how else to help here other than to suggest waiting.

 Sorry for the inconvience.

General Discussion / a few thanks
« on: March 15, 2008, 01:37:43 am »
I just wanted to throw a few shout outs and thanks to some people.

On thursday my house was broken into and amongst other stolen things was my laptop.

My buddy happy/wren has loaned me his desktop to use until I can afford to get a new one. So a huge thanks to him.

And also to major6/trith who i only know from playing with him online but when he heard about what happened offered to send me one of his computers. I really appreciate the offer but as i said, happy hooked me up.

General Discussion / Oh that snake doth rock!
« on: March 14, 2008, 03:07:26 am »
Just wanted to chime in here that the quest Darkstorme threw tonight was probably the best quest I've been on in the past 3 years here.  Excellent plot, allowing the PCs to bicker and build tension, lots of dramatic hotspots and man... that underwater quest area is just one of the best ones ever.  Kudos man... epic RPG kudos of a phenomenal level!

Introduce Yourself / Grudgingly
« on: February 06, 2008, 12:25:03 pm »
i have to admit: I´m lazy! Playing for some time now and enjoying the fantastic community, i almost forgot to say hello.
Well, hello there!  :)
It´s getting more and more like coming home and having a nice PnP session with lots of friends, which i actually did, many years ago.

All the builders, DMs and everybody involded in creating this world have done a tremendous job. Thank you all!

What else to say...?
Well, i´m the german guy who´s a real slowpoke typingwise, cause i actually have to think what i want to say, so have mercy and a little patience with me, will you?  ;)

Anything left ? Ah yes, 42 years old, freelancing musician, that´s why i have lots of free time to spend on the server.

Ok, let´s finish this. Heya and hello, see ya in Layo!

Introduce Yourself / I guess it's about time
« on: February 03, 2008, 11:15:54 pm »
Well this will be more of an introduce "ourselves" than my self.  My family and I have been playing Layo for over about three years and we have made it our home in cyberspace and brought cyberspace into our home through Layo.  I have attached a picture of the four of us that play in our "Command Center".  From left to right we are Angela (Peanut, Clover, Keela), Mike (Clarissa, Josslyn), Ariel (Rose, Dalila, Mellana), and Jon (Kalin).  There are two other members of our clan that are not shown but they are working on their reading and typing skills so they can join us as soon as possible.  They are Tim and Christy.  So all together we are 6 of us.  We live on Oahu, HI where I an finishing my Navy career and getting ready to get a real job.  Angela is a stay at home, home schooling mom, Ariel and Jon are seniors in highschool and believe it or not still get good grades and play Layo too.  See everyone in game.

Roleplaying / Clarification on the Ring of True Love
« on: January 29, 2008, 12:48:52 am »
It's come to the attention of the GM Team that there are some misconceptions and misunderstandings about what RP value and special properties these rings may have.

From the item's description:

Quote
The soulstone of your one true love glows brightly whenever you wear this beautiful ring on your finger.

"On its surface is engraved in flowing script: "Love Eternal"

Light Low (10m) Green

Now, RP-wise, these rings are constructed using imprinted Soul Stones from one's partner set into a gold band.  The rings can't actually be made in-game mechanically, but there are various ways to obtain them  with GM assistance.

Let me state: there is no objection to characters obtaining these rings for RP purposes.

However, it's come to our attention that players are RPing these rings as imparting additional properties upon the wearers. Most specifically is the ability for one to know or "sense" when their partner, the one who's bound to the stone in the ring, is killed, hurt or in some sort of distress.

This simply is not the case. It has never been the case, and anyone who is RPing this, or any other special properties of such things should not only cease doing so but retroactively remove it from their RP (i.e. Character Development threads).

RPing this kind of "sense" as being imparted through the rings, or more accurately the Soul Stones set into the rings, is dangerously close to telepathy, which was expressly forbidden from RP (and it doesn't exist for PCs anyway) a couple of years ago.  Beyond that, Soul Stones themselves simply do not have that sort of property at all.

Now, I'm pretty confident that no one was trying to skirt the rules or invent powers.  I'd guess, as most things like this, that someone along the line either assumed or got some incorrect information from somewhere.  These things have a way of snowballing, and I'm not going to blame anyone for this at all.  But I am asking, on behalf of the GM Team, that this not continue and that it is treated as if it never happened.

These rings are intended, in both IC and OOC senses, to be symbolic gestures for in-game couples.  From an IC standpoint, these rings contain an imprint of one's soul within the stone itself.  Symbolically, it is like giving a piece of oneself to another as a symbol of love and devotion.  This has tremendous RP value, but that is absolutely where it ends.

I do apologize if this impacts anyone's RP thus far. I normally don't like raising barriers, but this is a liberty that should never have been taken.  As I said, my purpose is not to point fingers, lay blame or take any sort of action against anyone as a result.  I'm simply asking that it stop.

General Discussion / Partying: a personal request
« on: April 04, 2007, 06:31:38 pm »
I'm sure I'm not the only one who has experienced this:

You invite someone, or someone invites you into a party. Someone else wanders by, initiates conversation, inquires as to your purpose, and joins the party. You are about to set off to smack things. Suddenly, and without warning, another face appears on your sidebar... you mouse over their portrait, and see that they're on another continent . . . Strange. . . . And then, another person is added and another.  More people join (none of whom are actually present) until the entire population of Layonara is in a single party!  All of a sudden, everyone has a reason to wait before setting out, "One minute, it is vital that I stare at my navel before heading into battle." Lo and behold, all those little faces in the party bar just happen to wander by, having the urge to kill the same things at the same time at the same place.Funny how that works.

Seriously though, there is a big difference between:

Me: This is a strong foe we aim to battle. Perhaps I should send a bird to Lady Pwnsalot, to see if she would be interested in joining us.
Other Person: Indeed, her sword would be welcome!
Me: *summons a falcon and writes on some parchment*
[Tell] Falcon message: Myself and a few others aim to slay the fearsome rats in the sewers, but we cannot do it alone, would you care to join us?
[Tell from Lady Pwnsalot]: Verily! I would never turn down such an opportunity, I shall be there forthwith!
*invite Lady Pwnsalot*
Me: *Receives a not from a bird, reads it and nods sagely* She will be here to aid us as fast as her legs can carry her.

And:

[Tell]:Hey, wanna come kill some stuff with us?
[Tell from Lady Pwnsalot]: Sure, I'm in Allindor, just wait there for me, ok?
[Tell] n/p
*invite Lady Pwnsalot*

There are plenty of legitimate reasons why one might invite someone who isn't there at the moment, but please have the grace to ask the rest of the party members, and at least make an attempt to have some RP justification. Too often, this kind of thing just spirals out of control (although my initial description may be a tad exaggerated ;)). I know I'm not the only one who prefers small parties, so please try to remember when everyone wants their friend to come along, it can ruin things for many of us. If you want to have large parties that can run roughshod over anything, there are plenty of people who enjoy that too, but to make every gathering like that is disrespectful to the rest of us, in my opinion. It really doesn't take much imagination to invite people in an RP appropriate way that allows the group to have their input. Maybe character A will refuse to travel if character B  goes along. Maybe Character A is shy and doesn't want to fight with people he doesn't know. And maybe some of us just have OOC preferences, and feel left out when people are invited without some IC dialogue. A little bit of communication and courtesy go a long way.  Thanks.

*I hope this doesn't sound too whiny and ranty, as the title says this is just a personal request, based on my own play style, and I realize not everyone is going to agree with me here*
