General Discussion / Death of a *coughs* Maiden
« on: June 06, 2010, 03:28:52 pm »
*Durgen casually enters the tavern keeping his eye on the corners of the place as he usually does for signs that this may not be safest place to drink.

Picking a dead leaf out of his beard, he takes a seat at a table near the door.  As the not-so-pretty barmaid starts to near his table, he overhears two young, muscled looking fellows talking about a scantly dressed woman who called herself a Xeenite priestess.  After drinking round for round with these two louts, she stated she had her fill with them and was going to look for some real men to party with.  With a long kiss for each of them she sauntered out of the tavern and set a course for The Rolling Hills.

The next morning her body had been found, laying at a very awkward angle.  It appeared she had run into a band of madmen that roam around those parts.

"What was her name again?"
The second replied, "It was Hedessa.  Man could she drink.  And those legs...."  The fellow just shook his head with a grin before changing to a somber look.

"Huh?" says Durgen.  The barmaid, not so patiently repeats "I said are ya just gonna sit there or do you want something to drink?"

"I be 'avin an ale" he says absently.  Then quickly states  "Naw, oi'll be 'avin one of dem Xeenite wines if ye 'ave somethin loike dat."  The barmaid looks at the dwarf curiously.  "I'll go find out."

After a fashion, the barmaid returns.  "Apparently some woman drank nearly everything we had.  I have this" she says as she sets a glass down "but I think it has turned."

Minutes pass after the barmaid leaves the table, the dwarf sniffs the glass and wrinkles his nose.
"Well Essa, ye always be a pain in me rear.  Naw ya got me drinkin' dis nasty stuff."

"What kin oi say, ye loiked ta 'ave fun, party ta wee hours in da mornin' with sailors, an use dat whip of yers ta beat both enemy an' social acquaintance, from whot oi 'ere, in ta submission.  And, durn it, ye tended ta git da best of me in our verbal barbs.  Oi guess oi'm jus sorry oi could nah be der when ye died.  Ye must 'ave found fellas dat loiked ta party a bit too rough."

"All oi kin say naw is dat oi got da last word in", he pauses, "but dat do nah really feel loike a victory."

Durgen raises his glass and to no one in particular says "to Hedessa Tanario, may ye be buried with a smile on yer face an' wine in yer flask."

Finishing the turned wine, the dwarf nearly chokes.  "By da gods, oi kin nah believe dis did nah get ya first."  He throws far too much true on the table and leaves out the front door.

Layonara Server / Update coming soon! New files required!

I can't say exactly when (as it all depends on what I decide to do about a couple of things) but sometime soon, there will be an update coming which will require everyone to download updated TLK and HAK files.

I've put them up on the server for download, so everyone can get a jump on the update. These new files will not interfere with anyone playing before the update, so you are welcome to download them and expand them into the proper folders:

Updated "control" HAK:
http://nwn.layonara.com/downloads/files/layo_controlv3r9.rar

Updated TLK file:

General Discussion / You Will Be Missed
« on: March 16, 2010, 08:09:54 pm »
Jonathan Selmek aka Daren Valhaikor aka poohbear383340 died this morning in a fatal car crash.

He was a great roleplayer and really knew how to throw you a curve. His characters were well known and quite diverse from each other.

You will be sorely missed.

The Dragon Storm Campaign / // Update!
« on: March 09, 2010, 06:32:45 am »
Hi guys,

As some of you may have noticed, I haven't been around much for some time. The reason for this is that I am relocating to Mumbai in India together with my family. My company offered me an exciting position in our Mumbai office and we have decided to take them up on the offer.

I just arrived here a little more than a week ago and am currently coming up and running on the job as well as finding an apartment and getting to know the place (whoa - its a lot different from Denmark!). I've started out solo, until I have a place for us, and am going back to fetch my family in April.

Yesterday I moved into an apartment that has a 256Kbit/sec connection, so needless to say I am somewhat restricted internet-wise. Nevertheless I intend to try to get online sooner or later and hopefully I can at least play a little.
Plot-wise this means that I will continue the mini-series that I started - and hopefully soon. I will give you a heads up on that as soon as I've found out whether I can GM or not with my current internet connection.

I hope that Steel and his homies are currently recruiting for the next quest episode... they better be! ;)

Over and out for now. I'll keep you updated.

Cheers, Harlas

Rumour Has It / Increadsed patrols out of North Fort
« on: January 23, 2010, 03:44:43 am »
Word of increased patrols heading out of North Fort has reached Audira, apparently based on rumors of Dragon Stealers stalking the Wandering Dunes for some purpose, perhaps even the dragon that inhabits those sands.

Rumour Has It / Night of Terror in the Gloom Woods
« on: December 24, 2009, 11:35:41 am »
Bards travelling the roads in the area around Ft. Vehl have been telling tales of a party of brave adventurers besieged within the walls of camp in the Gloom Woods along with Riam and his men.

The tales speak that a great evil befell the Gloom, as an army of undead, led by a dark elf cleric, besieged the camp where brave Riam and his men held in check as best they could the undead scourge.

Meanwhile, in Vehl. A party had gathered by mere chance on the roads outside of Vehl and Moreg, brave gate guard of Vehl, informed them of mysterious rumors of unusual numbers and types of undead in the gloom seen recently.

Under the leadership of brave Roferien clergy, the party plunged into the Gloom to investigate the rumors and were supposedly beset by undead in numbers so great that they had to hack a path through the tides of undead to reach Riam and his men.

The tales then continue to say that on a small nearly barren hilltop the party found itself in a desperate last stand battle against hundreds of zombies and other foul undead.

The party, standing shoulder to shoulder and back to back, were surrounded on all sides.. the screams of the already dead, and those who wished not to join them, echoed throughout the forest.. bringing even more undead to the scene.

There was mention of a great warrior, with a great sword larger than a man, cleaving great gaps in the ranks of the undead. Completely surrounded on all sides.. wading through the throng dealing final rest to the dead. Body parts flew in all directions as his he desperately cleaved them from thier owners merely to stay alive.

Back and forth, the battle flowed across the lonely hill top.. often the party would split.. 2 men to battle dozens of the horrid beasts in a desperate struggle to prevent them from ambushing the party from behind while the rest held back the main body of the undead horde.

Some verses sing of a great guardian mummy being seen in the deepest parts of the woods, commanding powerful magics that ripped the soul from one brave adventurer and left the rest of the party to carry his soul-torn body back to camp to lick its wounds and come up with a new plan of attack.

Finally, the tales record that a dark elven priest was reportedly responsible for the uprising, and was put to the sword.

Rumour Has It / A Shadow looms, the Night beckons...
« on: November 05, 2009, 02:49:27 pm »
In the seedier parts of Mistone, word begins to spread among cut throats, brutes, and thieves that someone is looking for help.  It's not clear what is required, but they all agree they have seen someone, masked, dressed in black leather sneaking around Fort Vehl and Leringard, often frequenting the more prominent taverns.  The few who have seen this person coming, are few, and even fewer have seen it leave.

Some say this "shadow" speaks to questionable characters about goings on in the local areas, but the most recent rumor has to do with a Co'rys noble and a piece of land, though the intention behind the inquiries is never mentioned.  It is clear though the individual is searching for those willing to assist without asking too many questions, and promises worthy reward to those choosen.

Strangely, very rarely is any mention made of how to contact said "shadow" should they have something to offer...  but somehow most get the unnerving feeling that when they aren't looking, someone is watching them, and that the Shadow will know who to confront next with it's proposition...

Perhaps it's you?

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Deities and Classes Suggestion
« on: October 21, 2009, 06:26:33 pm »
After the Sacred Fist discussion, it became apparent that this is not the first time by a long shot that a class has been denied to a specific deity.  While I am not a fan of that, in the spirit of someone else not being stuck with a character they can't progress as they had wished, I suggest a simple "Deity/Class" chart along the same lines of the deity relations chart.

Use the Deity Relation template and replace the deities on the X axis with the classes, denoting which can have what.  This chart could then be posted ahead of the classes section of LORE and would prevent any further unhappiness by spelling out the restrictions.

For example: Az'atta: No classes with more than X% "fighting" feats (fighter, barbarian, battlerager, duelist, assassin, dwarven defender, spellsword, arcane archer, weapon master, monk, sacred fist)

Vorax: No classes with more than X% "casting" feats with bard, cleric and sacred fist the exceptions (sorcerer, driud, wizard, spellsword).

Etc.

Layonara is a mature game, with a population who have been with it for years.  With alts being important to keeping things fresh, this won't be the last time there will be a class/deity conflict.

I am happy to make up the chart if requested.

Rumour Has It / Dragonstealers captured... ?
« on: September 17, 2009, 04:51:31 pm »
Rumors spread faster than bad news that a number of dragonstealers were captured and are being held in For Llast.  Some claim that half a regiment were sacrificed to bring them in.  Others insist that they were brought in single handed.  Still others claim that they let themselves be caught as part of some sinister plan.....

Who knows?

Roleplaying / Two Pet Hates
« on: September 17, 2009, 06:25:44 am »
Okay, maybe hate is too strong a word. The word 'hate' implies a depth of feeling I normally reserve for those things that peeve me in real life, not my chosen leisure activity.

Let's instead call these two pet niggles. Yeah, that sounds better. Less vitriolic by far. Now that I actually sit down to write about it, if it were not for the fact that Mrs Pseudo was watching Glee on TV and there is not much else for me to do, I probably wouldn't even bother. That said,

1.
Please no forced emotes/feelings in character descriptions! Forced emotes have been addressed ad nauseum elsewhere for general roleplay but not (to my knowledge) for character descriptions, I am talking about the info we can read if we right-click (option-click) on your character.

You don't make me feel uncomfortable!

I don't think your gaze pierces me to the very depths of my soul!

Etc, etc.

In short, you don't make me feel anyhting, I decide what my character feels. How 'bout you just provide an objective narrative that describes what I am seeing and I'll fill in the subjective stuff?!?

2.
Helmets
Cowls
Hoods
Veils
Scarves
Niqaabs
Other

So you've chosen to take up the roleplay challenge of a dark elven (half-orc, tiefling, etc) character. Good for you. A really interesting dark history, century upon century of brutality, cruelty, conniving and treachery. All interesting stuff. Hey, lets not forget those pretty nifty mechanical benefits but, of course, you have the compromise of being hated and mistrusted across the world to balance those.

What's your point, you ask?

Be realistic with what another PC would be able to see of you under your all-concealing helmet, hood, veil, etc!! If you can see with enough clarity to fight/spot/listen/bluff/concentrate/search/etc without penalty from the depths of your face covering - there is a fair chance I can see enough of your face to determine skin colour, glowing red eyes, etc!

I will accept my character cannot see ANYTHING of your face (hands/neck/etc) if and when I can see your roleplay reflect that the facial swaddling is so extremely thorough that you are stumbling about the place, three-quarters deaf and blind.

You're playing a dark-elf. Accept the roleplay difficulties that come along with the mechanical benefits. A face/race obscuring hood panacea seems, to me at least, a bit of a copout.

PS. This is not directed at anyone in particular.  :)

Glee is over, i'm off!

Rumour Has It / Horror in Hempstead Docks!!
« on: September 16, 2009, 12:16:18 am »
Word spread quickly through settlements near Port Hempstead and beyond.

A dark ominous cloud moved into the city Wharf. A cloud not a part of the weather of the world, with intent it lowered from high in the skies into the docks.

As it landed, panic and horror ensued. Many died when the cloud slid into their mouths and ate them from within. The local authorities have closed the docks until further notice while investigation ensues. No ships are allowed in and out of city (Please roleplay accordingly, signs have been posted in the wharf district).

Some commendation goes to Darthirae and Acacea, who having been around at the time were extremely helpful and saved many lives while dealing with the chaos.

----

Seemingly related, a children's rhyme begins circulating among the younger residents near the wharf, and then rapidly to those of other port cities such as Leringard, and with a short seeming time, even to Lor.

"When fog like night steals the light,
Blow it away, blow it away!

When tendrils creep and beckon sleep,
Step away, step away!

When rain comes down, wear not a frown...
Wash it away, wash it away!

If sleepers left sleeping, no cause for weeping,
Time to play, time to play"

Rumour Has It / Rumours about a Sorceress
« on: September 04, 2009, 10:27:49 am »
A small group of sailors and locals sit drinking in the Leringard Arms, enjoying a pint of ale one night. Pieces of their conversation are overheard.

... no really, she did! Paid me good money too.

Yer daft. No one sails to anywhere on Alibor except Stort, let alone there. Let alone a pretty woman all on her own!

*The bald, eastern-looking sailor burps loudly and thumps himself on the chest* Say what ya like, it's the truth. Lady Doom strike me down if it ain't! Prettiest lass I ever saw. Hair like a raven's wing and eyes like emeralds.

*A passing tradesman looks curiously at the fellow next to him at the bar* She give a name?

Don't rightly know if I ever asked ...

Well what was she like?

Lovely as a fresh sea breeze. Elfin, with them pointy ears ... odd lass, a bit, but polite enough and paid hard true.

*A local fish seller pipes up* Sounds a bit like Jaelle.

What, the sea witch? *He makes a warding sign, half in jest* Mist protect us from that one!

*He frowns at the merchant* Eh now! None of that ... she's a sweet lass, keeps to herself ... heard her sing once, voice like a siren ...

*He mutters* Sirens lure sailors onto rocks and kill them, you realize, right?

Coulda been her ... *He picks something out of his beard and examines it nonchalantly*

Well, what happened to her? I haven't seen her in here lately, nor around. Not in over a year, come to that!

*He murmurs under his breath* For which we should thank the Lady ...

*He shrugs and flicks whatever it was away and takes another long draw of ale* Who knows? She paid me sit there for a week or two, never came back ... so I left. She's prolly some pygmy meal now, or rotting in the River of Death.

I dunno ... ye might be wrong bout that. I saw a woman like that in Arnax, when last I was through there ... but that was nigh on three quarters of a year ago.

*The sailor, who seems a little smitten with the mystery woman, beams with hope* There ya go then! She's probably fine. The lass knows how to take care of herself ... though a year is a bit much, even for her ... *He frowns a little*

*The figure that has remained hooded whispers darkly* I wouldna count on that... *He then takes a long pull of his ale*

And why's that now?

*After a long pause* Cause when I saw her, she was being led like a lamb to slaughter by a dark spirit. *He makes a warding sign of his own*

A "dark spirit"? *He frowns more* What are you talking about?

*He nods gravely* Didna believe in him 'till that very day. Thought he was just a legend ... local folklore. Dark spirit, death himself, a demon, I dinna know which... only one thing's certain. If he took her for his own, she'd be better off rotting next to the River of Death on Alibor.

What do you mean, a demon's got her? *His voice raising dangerously* What's he going to do with her?

*His tone becomes deadly serious* I dinna know, lad. An' I'm sorry for yer lass's fate, whatever it may be. Eat out her heart, twist her mind, consume her soul ... all I know is that none who go with Him come back ... or if they do, it's broken and babbling and twisted.

*There is a long silence in the tavern before someone finally breaks it with a whisper*

Poor girl ...
Hall of Heroes and Heroines / Lueanne Lightfinger - One Last Farewell
« on: August 20, 2009, 06:38:24 pm »
Razeriem:  *looks around and spots Triba*
Razeriem:  Triba?
Triba Gues:  Uh huh...
Razeriem:  Lets go for a walk please.
Triba Gues:  *She waves a little to Raz* Sure..

Outside as they walk the streets of Port Hempstead

Razeriem: *grins very slightly*
Razeriem:  So how long have you known Lue?
Triba Gues: How old are you?
Razeriem: Young
Razeriem:  *winks*
Triba Gues:  Then probably just as long as you've been alive, what's this about?
Razeriem:  She have family around?
Triba Gues:  No.
Razeriem:  *slows his pace*
Razeriem:  Hedessa, Lue and I were off exporing the dwarven ruins in the Spirit Dunes desert.
Triba Gues:  *She listens to him carefully*
Razeriem:  We got deep into the ruin and Lue feel.

The pair finds themselves near the Port Hempstead mortuary.

Razeriem: I have seen death before, come for me and others.
Razeriem:  But this was different.
Razeriem:  I *pauses for just a moment*
Razeriem: I think She took the last of her.
Razeriem: If you have not seen her in the last week.  *swallows*
Razeriem: Then Lue is dead.  I am sorry.
Razeriem:  *points the last half block ahead to the building*
Triba Gues: *She blinks and remains quiet for a moment, the color on her tanned cheeks retreating and looking a little paler than usual*
Razeriem: I carried her all the way to here.
Razeriem: We couldn't leave her.
Razeriem:  *looks at Triba uneasily and then at the ground*
Triba Gues:  *She rubs her face and looks around, when she answers her voice comes low and choked* Lueanne? Little halfling, red hair?
Razeriem:  *nods slowly*
Razeriem: *tears are seen in his eyes and his voice is rough*  Yes I am sure it was Lue.
Razeriem: But I thought .. you might... have to see.  You know, ..for yourself. Triba Gues: *She swallows hard and cracks her neck once, then rubs her face as tears begin to freely move down her cheeks*
Razeriem:  *closes the distance with his arms slightly open*
Triba Gues:  *She eventually adds as her golden eyes well in tears* Her body is there...?
Razeriem:  *nods* They said they could , you know, keep it right for a week.
Razeriem: But she needs to be buried or whatever you think is right soon.
Triba Gues: *She winces at that and closes her eyes*
Razeriem:  *puts an arm over her shoulder and across her back unless she stop him or moves*
Razeriem:I am sorry. I did not know she was at ends with the Soul Mother.
Triba Gues:  *She lets a long shaky sigh and leans her head on his chest, not hugging him but holding her hands against her chest. Her forehead leaning on his chest and whimpering softly*
Razeriem:  *comforts her as best as he can, rubbing her upper back*
Razeriem:  I wish I got to know her better, she had a light about her.
Triba Gues:  *She shivers again and moves back a little. Her eyes tear stained and just looking generally miserably* She was that and more...
Triba Gues: *She glances over to the building* Thank you Razeriem...
Razeriem: *looks to her but doesn't make eye contact unless she does*
Razeriem: If you need anything.  I owe it to her.
Razeriem: I will help with anything you need done.
Triba Gues:  *She shakes her head* I will take care of it... If you were a friend, then keep an eye out for *she waves a hand* whatever that might be called... I will handle the rest. Razeriem:  *nods and swallows*
Razeriem:  Its a standing offer, if you ever need to know where or how.  I am sorry Triba.
Triba Gues:  *She nods to him and looks to the building* Me too... *She is obviously holding back a storm*
Triba Gues:  Thank you again...
Razeriem:  *shakes his head a little*
Razeriem:  *frowns and walks half way off*
Triba Gues:  *She nods to him and with a strained step she heads to the building*
Triba Gues: *She spend some time inside, getting all the paperwork done and arranging for Lueanne's body to be freed from custody*
Triba Gues: *She hires a simple carriage and under much discretion she takes the body with her after paying good money to extend the preservation of it just a little longer*
Triba Gues: *Hooded and minding just the horse, keeping herself busy she carries the body in discretion*
Triba Gues: *She seems stuck in her world and doesn't notice anyone as she walks the busy streets of Port Hempstead and books a private vessel to Leringard*

Triba arrives to the city of Leringard some time after. Gathering her items and her now forever silent friend, she makes a quiet trip to Palden lake.

Triba Gues: *She looks around and sighs, soft tears streaming freely down her eyes*
Triba Gues: *She picks a shovel and fighting the onslaught of tears, she begins the grizzly job of digging up a grave. Uncaring of the rain she toughens through it and digs through the night*
Triba Gues:  *Half way through the whole thing, the tears assault her and she is now whimpering violently as the hole is dug deeper and deeper against a tree full of memories*
Triba Gues:  *She tosses the shovel aside after the hole is dug and wiping her face from the tears she takes the body nearby and opens the blankets just enough to retrieve Lue's locket, which she then places around her neck. She kisses the halflings cold forehead and wraps the blanket around her once more*
Triba Gues: *Carefully she moves the body down into the hole and once the whole deed is done she leans against the edge of the grave, looking down, whimpering and crying for her*
Triba Gues:  *She whispers down at the open grave* I ever did love you. I dreamt of a life with you. A life I never had. I am sorry you had to go so soon, and I am even more sorry now that we never had a chance to find out.
Triba Gues:  *She murmurs down the grave* Have a safe trip, heart thief... It's just another journey... *She sniffles as she says that, her shoulders shaking and another set of tears begins to flow as she is unable to finish the thought*
Triba Gues:  *She sobs and then looks down at her twined necklaces, opening the latch on one she takes a seed and tosses it into the open grave. She wipes her nose and whispers* Its from the forest... Just a little piece of me that you will always have...
Triba Gues:  *She takes a long deep breath as she shudders in tears and picking up the shovel again she begins to draw the soil that was dug out back into the grave. A whole miserably and whimpering view*

The never-quiet approach of another halfling is only silenced by the heavy rain.
Acacea Thistletounge:  *She hesitates for a moment as though unsure what to say or do,  the rain coursing off an invisible form, then reaches a hand, pulls it back with the sound of chimes, then finally rests it on Triba's shoulder*
Triba Gues:  *She shivers and turns all of a sudden, unsure if a ghost has decided to visit her, her tear stained eyes refocus quickly as she recognizes Acacea's sounds and smells. She looks towards the invisible figure and her lower lip shakes as she tries to form words that do not come*
Acacea Thistletounge: *She passes a hand over her invisible face as if in indecision and then finally waves it aside, looking hesitantly between Triba and the newly dug grave*
Triba Gues: *She sniffles and holds the shovel in her hand. Clearly she has been suffering for a while now. She whispers barely audible and in a shaky manner* Lue... *it seems that is all she can get out*
Acacea Thistletounge:  *again the uncertain pause, and she glances again between Triba and the grave, her hand still on her shoulder*
Acacea Thistletounge:  *A moment passes silent in the rain, an awkwardness or uncertainty more present now than in other places or times, as though she is left with utterly no idea of what to do; another moment, and she finally offers a hug*
Triba Gues: *She takes the hug gladly, ignoring the original awkwardness, she simply wraps her arms around Acacea and wimpers quietly against her. The comfort offered seems to be of great help as she calms significantly in the old friend's arms*
Acacea Thistletounge:  Znihi? *She finally asks*
Acacea Thistletounge:  *She leaves her arms where they are, and looks past Triba into the darkness with her cheek close to her former second's*
Triba Gues: [Tell]  Spirit Dunes ruins... *She whispers to her, now calmer in Acacea's arms. She takes a long deep breath and rests her head against her old Sandcaller* Magically dehydrated...
Triba Gues:  Mbuhud Torim hourm... *She whispers to her, now calmer in Acacea's arms. She takes a long deep breath and rests her head against her old Sandcaller* Lekusecca tinathedit...
Acacea Thistletounge:  *There is a yet longer pause, and she blinks once at the location*

The light steps of another halfling can be heard down the road.

Jennara Creekskipper:  *waves*
Triba Gues:  *The two halflings are hugging each other next to an open grave*
Triba Gues:  *A shovel nearby and clearly Acacea consoling the other*
Jennara Creekskipper:  *keeps her distance and stays quiet*
Acacea Thistletounge:  *She finally speaks, still a little awkwardly, after the long pause* U el myhha.
Triba Gues:  *She nods against Acacea. She presses her forehead against hers in an endearing acceptance before moving back and looking to Jennara*
Acacea Thistletounge:  *She furrows her brow, of course not having heard the approach, and glances over her shoulder*
Triba Gues:  *Her sad face quirks in a small sad smile*
Triba Gues: [Tell]  *she looks to the grave* The halfling council came to say goodbye... it seems.
Triba Gues:  *she looks to the grave* Dni necwcurk syorsuc seli dy mea kyytpai... ud miilm.
Acacea Thistletounge:  *She giggles a little at that, the sound clashing with the setting*
Acacea Thistletounge:  U zem vomd dnurgurk dned.
Triba Gues:  *There is sadness as she picks up the shovel once more, but she seems strengthened by the company and begins to cover the grave*
Jennara Creekskipper:  *lowers her head*
Acacea Thistletounge:  *The uncertainty returns as Triba begins to cover the grave, and perhaps a touch of unsettledness; after a moment she leans over to help, though the unsettled expression remains*
Triba Gues:  *She nods to Acacea gratefully as she helps her. She looks confused, sad, and mournful, but most importantly unsure as to what to do. The grave slowly gets covered with the dirt*
Acacea Thistletounge:  *She discreetly sabotages the burial as if in an attempt to leave air holes*
Triba Gues:  *She glances at Acacea's attempt and then covers her face* Of course...
Triba Gues:  *She sighs a little and shakes her head amused, changing it a little to give the grave some breathing room*
Triba Gues:  *Eventually once its done she sits next to it and lets the shovel fall at her side*
Acacea Thistletounge:  *She plops down in the mud, staff across lap*
Jennara Creekskipper:  *reaches into her hood*

A lily is placed over the fresh grave.

Triba Gues:  **She nods a little to Jennara and smiles as she places the flower over the grave*
Acacea Thistletounge:  *She simply sits there for a few moments in the rain, looking tired and unsure; after a time she lifts the pipes Jennara had made for her and begins to play instead*
Triba Gues:  *She leans back on the little incline of the hill to listen to Acacea's song, glad to have her music and company. Remaining quiet there while they say goodbye*
Acacea Thistletounge: *There are no words and no stories of the fallen, no real memories woven through music; it is a simple melody played with bare feet pressing together here and there, a presence instead of a tale*
Triba Gues:  *She lets a small sigh out, her hands coming to rub her eyes and look down at the grave, then up at Jennara*
Triba Gues:  Lueanne... *She says simply, in case there is any doubt*
Acacea Thistletounge: *Small hurts and bruises from travel heal over slowly and are forgotten, the uncertainty lost somewhere in the process; she doesn't reach out to Triba or truly acknowledge Jennara beyond the watching, but is simply there, until she is no longer*
Acacea Thistletounge:  *Her eyes shift briefly to Triba at the word and then wander upwards again without a pause in the melody*
Jennara Creekskipper:  *frowns more than she was*

As if by odd chance, Razeriem on his horse can be heard trotting down the road.

Razeriem:  *skids to a stop*
Razeriem:  Heya ladies.
Razeriem: *eyes never quite make it to Triba*
Triba Gues:  *The halflings stand quietly as Acacea plays a song on her flute and they sit before a freshly dug grave*
Razeriem: *eyes catch upon the grave*
Razeriem:  *raz let his horse out slowly towards the road and says something softly*
Acacea Thistletounge:  *Her wandering black eyes pause on Razeriem briefly, then continue onward; there is a strange music in the air from her pipes, a melody that is not quite a song*
Razeriem: *a deep sigh may be heard as he allows his horse to go to a slow trot*
Acacea Thistletounge:  *She finally lowers the pipes again after the breath of them fades into the rain and the trees and echoes around them for a time after she's ceased playing them*
Triba Gues:  *She gives some time for the silence to find its way back around them before she says anything*
Triba Gues: *Eventually she passes a hand over the soil and stands*
Acacea Thistletounge: *She sits there in the rain and cranes her head back to look at Triba*
Triba Gues:  *She whispers down, a great deal of melancholy and sadness in her voice* Goodbye heart thief... You'll be missed...
Acacea Thistletounge:  *She pushes herself to her feet and after another pause, lays her hand on Triba's shoulder again*
Triba Gues:  *She glances towards Acacea and gives her a very grateful smile when she does that. She brushes her hand against Acacea's as well and nods to her*
Acacea Thistletounge:  U ser'd mdea.
Acacea Thistletounge:  *The words take a moment to work their way out*
Triba Gues: [Tell]  *She nods* Be well, Wind Spirit...
Triba Gues:  *She nods* Pi zicc, Zurt Mbuhud...
Triba Gues: [Tell]  Thank you.. *she adds in a murmur*
Triba Gues: Dnerg ayo.. *she adds in a murmur*
Acacea Thistletounge:  *she lingers there a moment longer, glancing to the grave, but mostly to Triba, her expression a muddle of things not said or sorted*
Acacea Thistletounge: *She finally leaves it at that*
Jennara Creekskipper:  *nods once*

The little halfling bard sings a ward of magic around the other two halflings.

Triba Gues:  *She smiles slightly at her magic and that seems to be the best farewell and the most understanding one that Acacea can give her*
Acacea Thistletounge:  *After only a few steps, she sings herself from sight, rain coursing off an invisible form as she makes her way out*
Triba Gues: *She picks up her shovel and glances at Jennara*
Jennara Creekskipper: [Whisper]  I have...
Jennara Creekskipper:  *swallows hard*
Triba Gues: *She rests a hand on Jennara's shoulder and looks at her*
Jennara Creekskipper: [Whisper]  I have... done... this...
Jennara Creekskipper:  *waves her hand a bit*
Jennara Creekskipper: [Whisper]  ... too many times, but not as much for people I know.
Triba Gues:  *She nods softly as tears mingle with the rain traveling down her cheeks*
Jennara Creekskipper: [Whisper]  Does she have no family?
Triba Gues:  *She shakes her head slightly* Her brother has never appeared... She never found him after many years seeking.
Jennara Creekskipper: *takes in a short, noisy breath and sighs it out*
Triba Gues: *She nods slightly* I think as far as family went, I was the closest she ever came to...
Jennara Creekskipper: [Whisper]  I am glad you are here.
Triba Gues: *She shoulders the shovel and looks around, then nods to her words* So many things unsaid... *She sighs and looks to Jennara* It seems indeed destiny that the halfling council is all here. Thank you for letting your feet guide you here.
Jennara Creekskipper:  *furrows her brow a little*
Jennara Creekskipper:  *then just nods*
Triba Gues:  *She nods to her, squeezing her shoulder slightly and moving back towards the ox nearby*
Triba Gues:  *She takes another deep breath* I need time... Thank you again.
Jennara Creekskipper:  *nods once*
Triba Gues:  *She tugs on the ox, glances to the grave as a tear drops down her cheek and then wanders off*

Character Stable / Now Accepting Donations!
« on: December 05, 2013, 11:51:14 am »
The Character Stable is open to the public for donated submissions! For all of you who have more character ideas than you know what to do with, here's one productive and generous way to aid the community. These submissions will primarily be for those folks who are new to the server and may struggle (for various reasons) with getting an appropriate character passed the character approval process. These reasons include but are not limited to:
 • age
 • unfamiliarity with the world
 • language difficulties
 • being new to RP
 • being new to online community games in general
We would like, as a community, to help these folks out and allow them a way to come join us.
For those who are interested in aiding us here, here are a few 'legalities' to protect both you and the player.
 • Make certain you are ready to release this character into someone else's hands! We want to let them develop the character as they see fit to do so. Please don't submit a character you are in love with the concept with because another's perception may be very different.
 • Once you submit the character, all the edits will be done directly by the GM/CA team to make it immediately insert-able to the world (with the exception of the needed edits by the new player).
 • Once you submit the character, it belongs to the stable and no longer to the submitter (this is absolutely necessary in case a future player would like to have their character be apart of the world changing events of Layonara).
As well we have a few rules that need to be adhered to. These are necessary in order to keep us from having to make repeated edits as the applications sit, among other things. Please keep these in mind when submitting a character:
 • Keep it simple. For the reasons listed above, please don't create anything too complicated so that new players experiencing some of these issues will be able to get right into the character.
 • Only use these standard races: Elf, Human, Dwarf, Gnome or Halfling.
 • Please only use these classes: Fighter, Barbarian, Rogue or Ranger.
 • Single class submissions only please.
 • Please only use the following alignments: Lawful Good, Neutral Good, Chaotic Good, Lawful Neutral or True Neutral.
 • Feel free to include deity information, but do your best to adhere as close to the basic deity information as possible.
 • No additional ear requests at this time (we may change this at a later date once we have the system up and running smoothly).
 • Feel free to include a suggested stat line up
 • Do not gear the submission towards any PrC intentionally.
 • Feel free to use any non-time sensitive lore, in fact we encourage this to help the new players become immediately immersed into Layonara. An example of time sensitive lore would be writing about the dark ages in the biography of a human. Non-time sensitive lore would be something like including that a relative is the guard in a particular town or that an elf character left Voltrex and would not be returning.
 • It probably goes with out saying that all characters need to adhere to the basic submission rules as every other kind of character, this includes content as much as mechanics.
That should about do it! It looks like a lot of 'rules' perhaps but if you think back to when you first started either here or in PnP gaming, you might realize it looks pretty familiar! Thank you in advance to any who donate! We all appreciate the invested effort to help other community members out.Regards,
The Character Approvals Team

Layonara Server / Congratulations Ycleption
« on: July 27, 2009, 10:48:03 am »
As the world of Layonara continues to change, so to do our needs and methods. Something that has seen many changes over the years is the process of Character Approvals. While the policies, procedures and expectations have evolved, so too have our means of choosing who approves characters to play in this world. At first it was a position held only by GMs and only those who wished to take on the responsibility. At some point, we opened up the position to the greater community, and in that the application process also evolved over time. Having tried several methods thus far, we have decided to try yet another and directly approach a long-time member of the community for the purpose of having this individual join the Character Approver team, rather than open up a potentially lengthy application process to fill a rather immediate need.

Please join us in welcoming ycleption as Layonara's newest Character Approver. We believe ycleption's time, judgment, world experience and positive presence within the community will be an asset to the Character Approval team and, through this, the world as a whole.

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Wemic Balancing
« on: June 14, 2009, 04:57:18 am »
I was reading through some submissions and noted to myself that I've never seen anybody stick with a Wemic for very long.  There have been plenty of very well RPed ones I met, but those characters get abandoned very quickly.  When looking through the stats for them on Lore, I can understand why.

Racial Qualities:

    * +2 Constitution, +2 Wisdom, -2 Intelligence, -2 Charisma (ESA +2 CON, +2 WIS, -2 INT, -2 CHA)
    * +2 to Listen, Spot and Search checks
    * +2 Animal Empathy
    * -2 AC from the size of the overall animal
    * -2 Concentration
    * -2 Appraise
    * -2 Persuade
    * Starting class restrictions:
          o Druid
          o Rogue
          o Ranger
          o Barbarian
          o Sorcerer
          o Bard
    * Barbarian Fast Movement
    * ECL: 2

when looking at stats, they are balanced with a +2,+2 vs. -2,-2. Skills have a +2 overall bonus with +2,+2,+2,+2 vs. -2,-2,-2.  barbarian Fast movement is a plus, but the class restrictions easily balance that out.  Then there's a ECL: 2 on par with a dark elf... ouch.  Add to this that they receive -2 AC from a size large (Size large being usually a -1 ac according to D&D mechanics)... ouch ouch and then on top of all of that, they are restricted to not only never use heavy armors, but also never to use any medium armors as well as they are all made of worked metal.  And add to that they don't even know common.  They are also stricken from using any finished metal weapons according to Ed, which is a huge disadvantage considering one of the perks is that they can use large weapons one-handed.  And they're supposed to use short bows as they're lower tech than longbows, which brings to mind the very hilarious image of a size large creature using a bow designed for a gnome.

I understand the desire to make them rare, but the total stats come out to a -1 ECL in that without the skin, they'd actually get more bang for the buck.  The double-whammy of -2 dodge ac and being limited to only light armor means that a starting wemic with a NICE DEX, say 16 would still have a 14 AC in Hide Armor, and even then they are discouraged from wearing armor unless in combat, which makes them sitting ducks for ambushes with an 11 AC.  With an average DEX of 10, that's 11 AC in battle and 8 AC when not.

I'd suggest one or more of the following changes: (and please add more ideas as you see fit!)

1. Some Natural Armor AC Bonus: as they aren't allowed to use anything but light armor.  If you're a massive lion, that hide must add SOME protection, aye?  It would also make for interesting RP as they would refuse most barkskin which would mess up their manes.

2. Lighten up on the banned weapons: If your perk is size large weapons can be used one handed, then let them use some size large weapons other than spear and quarterstaff which only do 1d8/x2 which is worse than a longsword.  Let them use falchions, greataxes, halberds and the like.  Not to mention scimitars which are already allowed for druids who shun metal weapons (or falchion, the wemic-sized scimitar ;) ).

3. Lower the -2 dodge ac to -1 in line with Size Large Creatures.  How do giantkin get +2 bonus dodge when they're large, while wemics with cat-feat get -2 dodge?  Wouldn't four cat feet with great leaping power and fast movement be a better dodger than a two-legged giant of the same size?  As the news has shown us, normal tiger can scale 8 foot tall walls and eat kids making fun of them at zoos with a single bound.  They could also have at least a -1 to attack from being size large.

4. Scent Feat Automatically: Why take the feat manually later when they already were born with the nose attached to their face?  Maybe specify that they MUST take this witht he human quick-to-master feat.

5: Low Light Vision: On par with the LORE description which points out that they see well in the dark having feline eyes.

6: Add +2 or +4 STR since they are size large with 4 feet and massive arms

7: Improved Unarmed Strike: as LORE states that they have large hands with retractable claws.

8: or just lower the ECL

Thank you for your time considering these proposals and please anybody interested add some feedback on your own wemic experiences and your ideas for improvement.  if you've made a wemic before but don't play it often, why not?
