Forum Discussion / Member names in bold on home page
« on: June 21, 2007, 11:59:01 am »
What does it mean when another member's name is bolded in the 'Online Users' box on the home page of the forums?  I know that if there is a '+' next to the name it means that member is on one's buddy list.  But I don't know what bolded names indicate.

Introduce Yourself / jjkolb
« on: March 14, 2007, 11:21:56 am »
WHO I AM:
Jeff Kolb.  Male, 5' 10", approximately 175 lbs, light brown hair, no tattoos.  Born in 1968 in Jackson, Michigan.  BA in Finance from Michigan State University.  I am 38 years old and married to the best wife a man could have.  We have three children (all boys) ages 4, 4, and 3.  Favorite band: KISS.  Favorite superhero: Batman.  Favorite sports team: Green Bay Packers.  Favorite TV character: Arthur Fonzarelli (the "Fonz").

HOW I GOT HERE:
I started playing AD&D 1.0 back in the early eighties with friends from the neighborhood.  We used miniatures made of lead and dice that had to have the numbers colored in with crayon.  Modules like Keep on the Borderlands, Ravenloft, Horror on the Hill, and Against the Giants were some of my favorites.  You tried to get the lowest AC possible and -10 was the best you could do.  THAC0-good times, good times.

Along came the Commodore 64, the greatest gaming machine, ever.  Video games replaced PnP among my group of friends.  All of the CRPG were single player, however.  My favorites were The Bard's Tale, Ultimas I, II, and III, Questron I and II, Phantasie, and Legacy of the Ancients.

Then I went to college and gave up on CRPGs for a while-until Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale.  Those got me hooked again.  I kept looking at NWN but my system at the time was not able to run it.  Finally I was able to buy the gold version and started playing the OC.  It was cool but I still longed to play with other people.

I started to look into these things called Persistent Worlds.  The first one I found was Layonara Online.  It sounded interesting so I wrote up a character submission and met the dragon.  That was more than two years ago.  I have made a few good friends here, sadly some have left.  My NWN time is limited but enjoy the interaction every time I am on.

My one and only character's name, Klaugraquene Dragonbane (Klaug), is from my old PnP days.  We had trouble coming up with names for our characters so I designed a random name generator, hence the odd name.  Klaug is in the mold of Sturm Brightblade, the knight from the Dragonlance novels.

Thanks to Leanthar and the team for creating and maintaining a tremendous world for us to play in.

General Discussion / Temple donation receipts

Is there a need for players to keep temple donation receipts, aside from RP purposes? Is it OK to throw them away or is there some future mechanism planned?

Just for Fun / Don't wave to the animals
« on: October 06, 2006, 01:17:24 pm »
This has to be one of the funniest things to have happened in-game in a long time:
Klaug, Jennara, Weston, and Gilli were on their way across Rilara when they came across a friendly white stag. Jennara, being the nice, gentle sort, waved to the stag.........who then charged her!! Poor Jennara had no option other than to defend herself. No one touched the corpse for fear of disease.
  I had a good chuckle.

Fixed Bugs / 1.68 Cloaks and horses
« on: September 15, 2006, 06:35:15 am »
Not a big deal but when I hopped on my warhorse, Johan's cloak turned invisible. When I dismounted, the cloak was still invisible. Unequipping and re-equipping brought it back.
Way, way back on the backburner, but I thought you should know.

I looked in the forums but could not find a way to rename my warhorse. Is it possible to do? If so, can someone enlighten me as to how?

If thisthread is inappropriate, please delete it. This is not intended to pull people away from Layo.
I was just wondering if anyone else was playing DDO, and if so, which server they were on.

General Discussion / Mazes and Monsters
« on: December 12, 2005, 01:21:00 pm »
So I was browsing through the DVD bargain bin at the local well-known retail store, when what should I find?....Mazes and Monsters!  Naturally, I snatched it up and watched it that night.
I remember when this thing aired on TV in 1982.  It was about three years after a young college student disappeared from Michigan State University (which I attended 1986-1991).  Apparently, this student broke into the steam tunnels under the University and played D&D there.  One of the theories was that this student got too wrapped up in D&D and "became" his character.  So, at the time, there was this anti-D&D hysteria and thus the book was written and the movie was made.
Our PnP group at the time watched it and laughed our tails off.  Twenty-three years later, it's just as funny.  Not funny that the kid in the movie lost his mind, but at the misconceptions throughout the movie (as well as the bad dialogue and even worse acting).
And for those unfamiliar with this work of art, Tom Hanks had the lead role.

General Discussion / "Skilled" feat
« on: November 17, 2005, 11:51:00 am »
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't humans supposed to get the Skilled feat and get one extra skill point at creation and at level up?  My character is human but I don't see Skilled listed in his feats.  I'd hate to think I missed several extra skill points.

General Discussion / Thank you Vyris
« on: October 20, 2005, 10:40:00 am »
This a thank you note to Vyris for the excellent work he did on my CDQ.  He put a lot of time and effort into planning it and it showed.  I especially like how he used a great deal of narrative to describe our surroundings.  He added a couple of chapters to the backstory of my character, Klaug.  I fear I wore out my dicebag though; I may have to get a new one.

I also want to thank Gulnyr and Doc for their help and the excellent way in which they RP’ed their characters.

*Stands and applauds

Just for Fun / Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God
« on: October 14, 2005, 12:22:00 pm »
OK, we probably all agree that the 2000 movie, "Dungeons & Dragons" starring Jeremy Irons stunk big-time.  I was channel surfing last night and hit the Sci-Fi channel.  Lo and behold they were playing the sequel (see the title of this post).  I caught it about half way in but I have to say it was pretty good.  The CGI special effects were not up to par by today's standards, but I have a feeling this was a very low budget film.  Anyway, I will probably purchase the DVD (if it is available).  Has anyone else seen it, and if so, what did you think?

...you actually feel bad that your ox died.  (In real life, not in character :( )

I was mining in the Sielwood cave and left my ox in between me and a spawn point (I won't name the creature).  While picking away, I see this certain creature advancing toward me and knew that it had slain my ox.  The poor thing had no chance.  I still feel a little guilty that I left him for slaughter.  My new ox just isn't the same...

Maybe I need a little break...

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / My problem with invisibility
« on: July 19, 2005, 08:05:00 am »
The exploration rewards thread got me thinking.  Actually, I was thinking about this for a while now.  I think we need to alter the invisibility spell somewhat, if possible.  Here's my problem with it:  Klaug (my paladin) has had the spell cast on him (as well as others in the party) to sneak past difficult foes.  (This goes against Klaug's code of honor, but for the good of the group, he relented; but that is another discussion).  Sure, visually, he is hidden, but a rogue he is not.  I know that several fallen branches would have snapped under his heavy plated boot, tipping off the creatures that something was nearby.  Not to mention the general clanking that his armor (and your filled pouches, if you don't wear metal armor) would cause.  Would it be possible to factor noise into this situation?  I grant you that rogues are a stealthy lot and should be able to sneak past most foes.  On the other hand, I think running around the world while invisible makes it too easy for some other classes to explore and collect CNR.  My $.02.

Oh, and if this has been a topic before, feel free to point me there.

Quests Ideas and Discussion / Mistone Festival
« on: July 06, 2005, 07:38:00 am »
I want to throw this idea out and see what everyone thinks.  How about we have a week long Mistone Festival?  I’m going to list some ideas without knowing how difficult it would be for the team to pull off:  At this festival PCs could rent a tent or chest from which to sell their wares; there could be archery tournaments, melee tournaments, ale tents, food tents, story telling, fortune telling, etc.  This would provide a great environment for PCs to interact and share their experiences.  I propose we hold it in Ft Hope since there seems to be a fairground already there.  I feel it should be a week long affair to ensure that everyone has a chance to attend at one time or another.  I understand this would take a lot of effort from the team, but I feel it would be worthwhile.  I’m sure there are players that would be willing to help out; I know I would even though my time is very limited.  Let’s see some ideas…
