Ask A Gamemaster / Why are Malar called Malar?
« on: September 13, 2010, 03:36:50 pm »
Let me point out that Malar is a God from Forgotten Realms, and in the book, Malar Panthers are supposed to be his divine creation - the main reason they're so tough.

This seems to run afoul of your intent to protect Layonara from WoC copyright issues.   (This is not intended as a personal criticism of anyone, BTW.)

General Discussion / One tangential point
« on: September 09, 2010, 05:36:33 pm »
Although the Catch-22 thread is clearly both exhausted itself and is locked, one tangential point needs to be addressed.   It has been stated by a few players a mischaracterization that my posts are "low" "all out attack" or not "objective" or "player vs team".

Nothing could be further than the truth.

Instead, I am simply taking the Layonara leadership at its word that it welcomes honest critiques, further adjusted by my belief that "being respectful" is not an instruction never actually point out when things could be done better.

Specifically, in all my posts:
[li]You will not find a personal attack, either by name calling, or imputing a pejorative motivation to anyone.[/li][li]They are almost always a mixture of things I think the team is doing well, along with things that the they're not doing well.[/li][li]Almost always when criticism is given, I suggest a positive alternative, rather than just making a negative comment.[/li][li]There is never an expressed expectation that something must change, or anyone must do something.  This is their baby, not mine.[/li][li]I have never made a complaint on behalf of any of my own PCs; I never write anything guided by self-motivation.[/li][li]My strongest criticisms have been reserved for situations where I felt that some other player's established PC was inadequately treated after a change in server rules or lore harmed them.[/li][li]My critiques are not pointed at some goal I want the team to adopt, but rather at suggesting better approaches for the team at accomplishing goals they have set for themselves.   Especially in terms of hanging on to more casual gamers.[/li][/list]Whoever is reading this has, of course, the right to disagree with anything I say.   Ignore me if you want.  Pretend to yourself that I'm the Simon Cowell of Layonara (although I do not think I am anywhere near as harsh as he is).   But do not pretend to yourself that I am somehow participating on this site out of any intent to "grief" the Layonara team, or to show any disrespect.

Indeed, by being open with my critiques, I think I am actually far more respectful of the team's maturity and fairness than many who are critical of me.  And regardless of whether the Layonara leadership likes anything I say or not, it's much easier to handle issues out in the open, than deal with persistent unsubstantiated whispers, like the view that the Layonara team plays favorites (a charge I think is completely false, by the way - and I offer as evidence the fact that none of my PCs have ever been treated unfairly in game).

I will finally note that I am generally not writing as many of these as I used to simply because the leadership already has an idea of what it wants, and how it plans to get there.   I certainly wish them well, and hope any misgivings I occasionally feel about how they go about it are entirely in error.

Development Journals and Discussion / (noname)
« on: April 01, 2010, 03:20:23 am »
The orc threw herself a birthday party.    No one was around.   It was safer that way.

She was sixteen years old.   That was two whole years since she killed Nezzak, and she had not been killed yet!   Or, she had, but the stone brought her back.

The world liked her.   She sang softly, remembering.

She remembered her first time in human lands.  She met Frak, who was a goblin.   She thought he was going to hurt her, but he didn't.  And a human named Ragnar.  She thought he was going to try to take her as his slave, but he did not.    She showed him her blade, "@#*^$& YOU", just to be sure.

Smiling, she remembered how it took her so long to understand how humans lived.   They did not just take slaves.   Well, they had girlslaves, but the girlslaves weren't always slaves!   They could wear clothes!   They could own things!

It took months, but when she finally understood, it was a revelation.

She snuck into the city called Vehl.   There was a half-orc at the gate, which made her scared, but the city itself was a wonder!   It was the biggest and best place she had ever seen.   Much cleaner than any orc camp!    And the girlslaves, were free to sell their own bodies for money instead of being owned!

She thought to sell her own body for money too, but didn't know if any human would want her, so she decided to pretend to be a warrior instead.   She met a elf magic-warrior named Tralek traded her some old armor for a box of corn.   She didn't tell him she had stolen the corn from the fields without paying the farmer, because he might not have taken it then.   She then met another warrior named Flynn who had a voice like her father.   He told her it might be better for her to hide that she was an orc.  Even with the orc guard at the gate, people might not like her.   So she did.

She spent time smashing skeletons, and getting money, and bought tickets.   She went on trips on boats and saw things no orc had ever seen, she thought.   Certainly not a girlslave like her.

One night, she felt the city's death-stone call her.   She was scared, but it seemed to want her, so she sang to it.   Then she prayed.   Then she touched.   It felt safe and warm.    Others stared at her.   She felt the stone sing to her in her spirit.

She knew she was different then.   That she would fit into these strange human lands with many not humans.   No matter how strange it ever got.

It was then she met the girl-slave warriors.    They did not pretend to be warriors.   They were openly girl-slaves with weapons.    These were slave-warriors!      It was such an alien concept, the words themselves made no sense in orcish.

But there they were: Zarianna, Annwyl, Laaren, Lili, these were slaves with names!   Their fathers had given them names.   And let them fight.   And they fought well!   She met other enemies of Orcs, knights, and paladins, and a singer, who sung to the world like she did.   Andrew, he knew about orcs, and figured her out right away.   It was he who told the knight to not hurt her.  He told her she was a "Milady", not a slave.

But her biggest change was with two little halflings, Cherry, and Charm.   She had followed them and Annwyl into the Red Goblin caves and they were all ambushed by hundreds of goblins.   Somehow, through it all, she'd managed to live.  They all did.   It was the first time in her life she saw anyone fight for her.   The first time anyone cared.

After they'd returned, Charm decided to give her a calling.   Cherry wanted to call her Iris.  Charm wanted to call her Lily.   Ragnar called her HeyYou.

She knew she had no real name.  Her father had not given her one, because he did not want her sisters to be jealous.    And since he is now dead, he will never give her one.

But she likes her callings, like the ones slaves give each other in camp.  She finds she does not even miss her old life.

Humming a birthday song to herself, the orc eats a piece of pie.   It had been given to her as a gift.  She feels like a leaf now, being blown about to strange and different places.   Where will she land next?  She does not know.   But it will be good.   Or, at least, better from where she came.

Rumour Has It / Tales of the Heart
« on: February 14, 2010, 02:08:01 am »
In Hlint last year, I was privileged to attend a storytelling held by a number of Bards and adventurers upon the topic well known in the holy temple of Ilsare: Love.   What follows is my true and complete copy of the stories that were told.

Because these stories are not mine, I choose to remain anonymous.  So though I am certain certain members of the temple will recognize my pen, I ask for them not to unmask this devoted, yet humble, priestess.

The event was structured by the Master of Ceremonies as a contest.  Each had to be a tale of aspect of love, romance, or desire.  Each also had to present some sort of moral.

The best tale awarded a prize.   The contestants, in order, were:

Andrew Reid, a deliciously handsome bard
Laaren LeMeele, a nearly angelic blonde human woman
Timulty Keel, an ancient human wizard, pretenaturally young
Zarianna, an adventuring sorceress
Jaelle Thornwood, yes - the Jaelle - legendary Sorceress and Illusionist
Morunas Khan Val, a disciplined, yet oddly peaceful dwarven monk
Darthire Zhalberen, a beautiful, yet alien, silver-metal haired elf

Each story follows, as best as I was able to scribe them....

Ask A Gamemaster / One more time with alignments...
« on: February 07, 2010, 11:10:42 pm »
I know these are going away for the MMO, but I'm still confused about the current policy concerning alignments.    I have been told that you cannot shift your alignment by simply beginning to RP your new alignment.   Having your PC RP that alignment that is different than their current alignment is a policy violation, and will result in your character being punished - by not being allowed to apply to change their alignment.

The way you alter alignment in Layonara is to have not one, but two CDQs, to alter your alignment values.

Okay.  Kind of different than I'm used to, but fine.  Those are the rules.

But now I am seeing GMs give out alignment shifts based on RP actions going on in their quests.   Invariably the only alignment shifts that GMs give are "evil" shifts (conspicuous acts of niceness, law, or chaos, never seem to shift alignment), but that's a different issue.   What I don't understand is how this is reconciled with the "only alignment CDQs change alignments" rule.

Should GMs be giving out alignment shifts at all?   It sounds to me from the policy, as stated, that instead of such shifts, GMs should be marking players down for "playing out of alignment" punishments.     Your help in understanding this matter is appreciated.

For Treents protecting sources of wood, they should drop the same type of wood.

OOC Note: This thread will be used to log various in-game conversations, PMs, and (if it happens) email that are in-character, related to Darthirâe, and interesting.

The logs have been heavily edited, removing game status messages, and other things.  Some simultaneous responses were rearranged to make them a bit clearer.  But they are largely verbatim.

The PMs are also verbatim.  And I do not go back and excessively check with the senders for permission to reproduce them here.  But I assume that anything sent in-character (or sent by a GM) is reasonable to reproduce in a private development journal, only readable by the GMs.

Ask A Gamemaster / Policy questions regarding new alignment rules
« on: September 29, 2009, 02:32:35 pm »
First of all, let me thank the GM team for writing up the new alignment policy rules.  Having them in black and white ensures that there will be no further mix ups.

I do have a few  questions, however, that weren't made clear by your policy...

First -- who is it that makes the determination of whether someone is playing within their stated alignment?   Is this done on an individual GM basis?   Is there a vote?

Second -- What is the criteria used to determine whether someone is acting within their alignment?  I noticed that Hellblazer was using the documentation currently posted on the site (which is the classic AD&D definitions), but I also know that you are moving away from AD&D, and apparently turned him down for adhering to those.   So how do we know what is, or is not, acting outside one's alignment?

Third -- What, specifically, are the sanctions that you apply?  (Beyond restricting alignment change?)

Fourth -- As part of this policy, is there any warning given before the sanctions are applied?    If, for example, a neutral PC has been determined by the Layonaran powers that be, to be simply acting too Good for their approved alignment, do you send them a PM, warning them to start being more Evil, before you launch into your retributions?

Fifth -- For PCs who are determined to play outside their alignment, are you going to have some form of explicit path of atonement to establish that they've come back under your good graces?

Sixth -- What is your grandfathering policy?   Classic AD&D says that alignment changes with behavior: if a PC acts chaotic evil, then they get that alignment assigned to them, whether the player wants it or not.   You have set up a system here where alignment is like a religion, and it requires huge character development (two CDQs), to alter a PCs allegiance to it.   You have every right to do that, but what do you intend to do for players who have been, prior to the rollout of this new policy, playing their PCs using the default AD&D assumptions?

Specifically I want to know if my PC, Rottie, is on your blacklist because he has been trying to follow (what he sees as) the precepts of Az'atta, even though his approved alignment is Chaotic Neutral.    (I would argue that Az'atta herself, who has become  increasingly stringent with her continued definition, is not playing anywhere near her "approved CG" alignment, and really should be reclassified as a Lawful Good deity - which would explain why Rottie is having so much trouble with her rules, rules, rules.)

Similarly, Hellblazer's Brian (Njord) also seems to have been rejected for an alignment shift - because for at least the last half a year his playing classic AD&D has been in violation of rules that you just rolled out this week.

Any help you can give on these issues would be appreciated.    How to get a PC off your blacklist is the most important one from my perspective.

Ask A Gamemaster / Requesting an official GM policy ruling...
« on: September 27, 2009, 05:30:25 pm »
Hi.... it' me again... *nervous smile*...   I hope I've not been bothering ya'll too much, but, um, I have another policy question I'd like to ask.

Darthirâe was walking around the pygmy lands, fully covered and protected by a recently cast Greater Sanctuary when the infamous G-Sanc bug hit: unlike the previous times she had been there, the pygmys saw her plain as day.   And because of the Greater Sanctuary spell effect, she could cast no spells to protect herself, got swarmed, and died in a few rounds.   (While she lost some coin, she did make her save vs the Soul Mother, so I'm not terribly upset.)

Now to my question.   We all understand that this kind of death isn't reimbursable under Layonara policy, because this is a bioware bug, not a Layonara bug.    But  when the G-Sanc bug hits, am I allowed to use her Tome of Teleportation to quickly exit the level?    The Tome does work, even when under the effect of Greater Sanctuary.

Please understand that up until now I have been extraordinarily conservative with my use of the Tome.   I have assumed, based on the rules I was given about it, that in Layonara "Lore", using the Tome of Teleportation involves a ritual that is rather lengthy, and so could never be used in any circumstance in which timeliness is a consideration.   Certainly it has no legitimate use during normal combat.

But given that this "combat" is not legitimate itself, but rather caused by a bug in BioWare's code that the team would fix if they could, I think an exception should be made.   It's only fair.

It also should be a rarity. The G-Sanc bug is very intermittent - which is probably why BioWare never caught it in the first place.    If you allow this one specific use, I promise it would be used only when she is alone and covered under the G-Sanc effect.

Thank you for your consideration.

Ask A Gamemaster / Mechanical restrictions of levels....
« on: September 04, 2009, 07:45:34 pm »
I understand why 1/19 class splits are not allowed.   But why is it that splits like: 18/2(+3) aren't allowed?  In other words, say an 18th level fighter switching to Cleric for levels 19 through 23 (the minimum of 5 you have to have)?   What's the big deal about level 20?

This doesn't affect me personally at all, but I just can't figure out what the terrible exploit for allowing that would be.    Maybe I'm just not devious enough.

Can anyone help me out?

LORE Bugs / Message sending bug...

Darth can't send messages through the website.  She always gets the message:

Even though she has plenty of money.   I'm thinking it may have something to do with the â in her name, perhaps?

Fixed Bugs / Iron golem poison gas does double damage sometimes - FIXED
« on: August 23, 2009, 09:52:21 pm »
Darth just had her first legitimate soul strand loss. Still, it seems to be her luck to hit on every single bug in the game engine.    Let me explain:

She got caught in her own iron golem's poison gas attack, and died from it.   The funny thing is, this should have been impossible.

The gas is listed as the following in LORE:

"Miscellaneous: Iron Golem Breath (This DC 17 poison deals 1d4 Constitution damage, then death)."

In fact, one reason why I felt safe picking it over the helmed horror summon was because I wasn't particularly afraid if he accidentally got sprayed a little.    But the first time it actually happened, she died impossibly quickly.

I went back over the log to see what happened.  I'm going to point out all the places where she could have lost CON.

Even if she had been doubly unlucky and lost the maximum CON from the poison damage, her CON is 14, and she should have had 6 CON left.   I think something is double counting somewhere.

Note, I'm perfectly aware that this may not be something that the Layonara team can fix, and thus may not qualify for a SS reimbursement.   But at the very least, it should be noted in LORE that the poison damage may be considerably greater than 1d4 CON.

(I'm a bit POed at myself because I could have easily applied a bandage to cure the poison.  I just didn't think it was all that bad.)
