General Discussion / Re: A few thoughts...
« on: September 06, 2007, 08:34:11 am »
Well for some reason I liked that post. I've been asking people quietly and skulking for some time questions about the newest update. They tend to agree, although they have seemed to do so in the same quiet out of the way manner. Neverwinter Nights Layonara to my understanding is basically done in terms of development. Maybe a couple of small updates for important bug fixes, or the odd DM request will happen.

All the same, I have read her post and find a bit of reason to do other then quietly wait. Having seen favorable winds fall to most any given class over time. I've a much longer term approach when it comes to the term balance than many. Remember when if you were not an enchanter you had no chance, how about when clerics were all powerful, what about when... I could go on for some time. Constructive criticism is always key in life, and never easy to perform. So I suppose my agreeing with her is the criticism part of it, so now to be constructive would be the other half, yes? I suppose I could agree with her constructive outright, but I like that part to be my own at the least.

Constructive but manageable, constructive but manageable. That would be a trick really wouldn't it? It has to be something implemented easily, quickly and with little effort. Otherwise with this state of 'final update already passed' it just isn't realistically going to happen. Spells, no that is to much overhead. More areas, thats just pushing for a problem with maximum load servers. The spawns, well spawns are not to hard to change around. With such a varied selection of creatures some of the 'range' the new areas present should be represented ideally for my idea.

Monsters when in monotone are easy to set up, you can predict which way the battle goes with strengths or weaknesses when presented. Unfortunately it also makes the battles fairly monotonous, not just for casters but everyone involved. All I can suggest is having two or three types of monsters in a single spawn. Has this been done before? Yes, did it always work, no. I've observed the key to it was a variance between those monsters with saves and immunitys. A strong willed one with high will but low reflex and/or fortitude, with his nice friend the gentlemen with a gut of iron but was either weak willed or slow of movement. The next key to the situation would be those immunitys, weak willed but immune to mind spells defeats the point self evidently. Now of course boss monsters are different, they lead a hord of problem makers. Exception not the rule falls into play there.

So is the editing of a few areas, to add in some variable spawns to unreasonable to ask? I don't think it really is. The new dead/wild magic areas wouldn't need to be touched, but the live magic ones perhaps could be adjusted a bit. So long really as a spawn cannot be wiped out by a single attack from any given class but at the same time it can be damaged as a whole, more people are happy.

Anyway I really don't have anything else to say on this subject. Quick two line review.
Problem: Monsters suffering from all or nothing when involving casters.
Solution: Varied spawns, allowing some volatile magic to work its wonders but not wiping out an entire spawn at once.

Hind sight, how I wish it was more forward thinking. Been handy to know what I have observed up till now about six months ago.

I'm almost certain it does not. My own caps at +5 though I think the level 27 song is +6. Your math on the bardsong is also on the dot, and the bonus your going to get from equipment is also right. Although you will be working without a weapon, off hand, belt and bracers to do so.

For Fourty Three Perform, you will attain this around level twenty five. For one hundred perform, you will never come close to attaining this. On the other hand, no one else will ever come close to one hundred.

That said, you will need to invest heavily in equipment to raise your perform. A word of warning, this will somewhat cripple everything else you could be doing. That goes for the following three feets: Artist, Skill Focus Perform, Epic Skill Focus Perform. They will help but not very much, except the epic focus.
It also applies to the equipment, the instraments are more then moderatly weak and come with a major drawback. When you unequip them you lose the spells you could gain from them. Meaning if you equip an instrament at six spells you will still have six spells, unequiping it will drop you by one to three spells of that level. Beyond instraments theirs only one craftable item I ever encountered.

General Discussion / Re: An Open Letter to Leanthar
« on: July 22, 2007, 12:21:49 pm »
The first reply: As my dictionary, a copy of "Webster's" does not include favoritism, merely favor/favorite with the traditional little -er -ism -ing. I was considering, and thus use all its definitions, positive and negative as one. With ways of interpretation and application applying to them all. A person can favor both unfairly and fairly. However stating that people whom have worked hard will be favored fairly then stating this is not favoring is rather irritating to say the least.

Yes second reply that is the entire point of the post. You earned the influence around Bloody Gate, therefor you have the role play clot to influence its direction. Things that happen to it directly concern you, and events around it will be a greater priority to you.

To the third, well "Webster's" didn't have Favoritism. Just Favor/Favorite and I can never remember where dictionary.com manages to find its reference, I hardly use it. I of course appreciate semantics, as without them we would need only one symbol to express everything. Maybe I need to buy a newer dictionary also, but this one is still in pretty decent shape.

To the Fourth: Please define anything you have ever done in your life without words. Words make civilization work and therefor must be chosen carefully, I myself am still not certain how well I can twist words to be coherent.

To the Fifth: I have always found semantics are key to being fully understood. I also lean on the side of 'wrong' most of the time. That and I invited said dog pile in the final paragraph. Of course after hearing about a few things said in IRC last night I get a good giggle out of the two people whom applauded my post, so that makes it worth having made.

To the Sixth: Yes indeed, and if he hadn't said 'No this isn't favoritism' I wouldn't of gotten irritated. Either be straight forward about what is going down, or say not a thing and let it be. I'm instantaneously suspicious of anyone whom states that they are not doing something. Given I'm also suspicious about people whom say they will be doing something.

To the Seventh: Hrmm, I actually don't have anything to say... Uhm better grammer then me.

To the Eighth: Indeed, much in the way of hurrah.

Anyway that is the one letter from me you will get on this subject. I tend to feel it fair to explain myself one time after I make a post when needed. To anyone whom speaks after this, well I am certain I will find your responses either thought provoking or amusing.

Back to lurking with me.

Once upon a time I sugested this.
Rename the ear to "Animal Empathy".

Done and done. Its not a language 'now', its animal empathy. Something clearly defined and explaned. Feel free to correct the spelling on this one, I didn't run it through word.

General Discussion / Re: The Dark Beast - Quest Feedback

Drizzlen I’d advise you to walk up to your manager at work, chew him out, and then say 'no offence’ or 'nothing personal’. This will cost you, your job however it will teach you that inane prattle will not work in reality.

I did not discuss anything pertinent at all about the quest, beyond one detail that was repeated once the Game Master said start. The questions asked were of other relevance’s and on other subjects, however if you cannot be bothered to use your head even a little. I cannot be bothered to make more then the suggestion to 'ask around’ before throwing a stone in my direction.

As for not always trusting what Ozy says, I say that’s probably the smartest thing you can do. I honestly hear that comment a lot, and I’m always agreeing with it. The reasons for it are unfortunately mostly out of character, and not complementary to the team. I will leave it at that, complain to them if he’s giving bad answers not to me I’m just a parrot.

Aeon for that I do apologize. I  did not think the DM was going to spawn demi-gods upon you. Much less ones possibly marked invincible/plot, had I known that then I’d of informed you what you were dealing with as monsters as dangerous as Bloodstone was. I expected with the low level quest mention, and that it was highly bash oriented that in fact an axe to the head would work.

Now if you don’t mind I need to determine if I came down a little harder then intended on Drizzlen for irritating me.

Just for Fun / Re: Rules for writing a fantasy novel

(Looked like you might of neglected this one, I actually tend to put it at #2)

#6 The Villain must be stupider than dirt.

It is well noted that heroes have on average less intelligence then a twelve year old. However one must not forget in order for the hero to attain any victory the villain must be even less clever than the hero. Please be certain to ignore all plausible back-story indicating that the villain is a careful, clever individual that has taken excessive steps to insure their world domination continues.
The cunning general whom managed to conquer the world, through treachery and his ability to lead armies. Will inevitably do something entirely suicidal decimating his forces and allowing his own life to be endangered by the small group. Where upon he will arrogantly fight alone the hero instead of calling for his guards. This allows the hero some small margin of hope that his opponents sword will break. Or a veteran of scores of battles will forget how to fight.
The wicked advisor whom managed to ensnare the royalty turning it into puppets with his dark magic. Despite all reputation for ruthlessness and caution will stop to have a monologue instead of obliterating the hero. This will allow the heroes friends (including the princess disposed when the royal family was slaughtered) to come to the rescue and insure victory.
The near omniscient demi-god of darkness will neglect to hear at any point in its existence from any source, the other half of the legend involving itself. The one told in every inn and tavern throughout the story. So after attaining control of the entire world in its age of darkness, it will neglect to have its minions capture the one item used to destroy it before beginning its dark reign of terror. In the instance it is an item to be destroyed in a certain place, they will neglect to simply destroy the place or make it entirely inaccessible. Instead this place is to be ignored and populated with only a few dangerous sounding monsters easily thwarted by individuals perhaps less cunning then the common dog.

General Discussion / Re: Sword of the Dragonslayer
« on: April 30, 2007, 04:51:37 pm »
You are both right and wrong at the same time. Here is how it would work.

Long-sword does 1D8 Slashing Damage
Long-sword with 1D8 Bonus Slashing Damage would do 2D8 Slashing Damage.
Long-sword with 1D8 Bonus Slashing Damage and 1D6 Bonus Slashing Damage would deal 2D8 Slashing Damage.
Long-sword with 1D8 Bonus Slashing Damage and 2D8 Bonus Slashing Damage versus Monster X would deal 2D8 Slashing Damage against all monsters but Monster X which would take 3D8 Slashing Damage.
Long-sword with 1D8 Bonus Slashing Damage and 1D6 Bonus Slashing Damage versus Monster X would deal 2D8 Slashing Damage against all monsters including Monster X.

So you are both right and you are wrong at the same time. It does stack but it also does not stack. It takes the highest modifier in addition to the base item properties. Now let us add in one final variable the critical enchantment bonus.

Long Sword +5 does 1d8 Slashing Damage +5 For 6-13 Slashing Damage
Long Sword +5 with 1D4 Bonus Damage does 1D8+1D4 Slashing Damage +5 for 7-19 Slashing Damage note that the 1D4 Bonus damage is not overwritten by the +5 Enchantment.

Bonus Damage Type Piercing on a hammer means that now the hammer is both susceptible to Piercing Resistance/Immunity and Bludgeoning Resistance/Immunity and does nothing more. Items like a dagger which gives Bonus Damage Type Piercing do absolutely nothing but raise the merchant value and level requirement.

The swords bonus damage would strike as follows. It would calculate first if it would pass damage reduction, based on enchantment bonus making greater magic weapon critical. Then it would calculate for damage resistance, meaning if the dragon has any resistance to bludgeoning the effects of the two dice six would be pointless. The damage type that was selected was likely an oversight by the team they have not had time to correct, as bludgeoning bonus on a sharp weapon just doesn’t make sense at all. Also slashing damage would be helpful in overcoming the damage reduction and resistance of dragons thus making it truly a dragon slaying sword.

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Re: Balancing suggestion
« on: April 12, 2007, 03:22:22 pm »
My advice on the subject, is give it time. The fact that fighters are the second most humorously pathetic class in Layonara is well known. That magic users, especially clerics and mages totally dominate is also well known. The team is aware of this, that is why Layonara is moving from Low-Magic to Medium-Magic. This was stated in Leanthars initial post about version three, however it will take some serious time to do that roll out.

Normally I’m not patient with the team on this subject, but in this case from personal experience in that area it does take some serious time. Making items, especially re-making items is time consuming and more boring then watching paint dry. In addition to the literal making you have to figure out how your going to balance it in the first place. If your getting into items then your also getting into spells to scale them so that its fair across the board. So when they do the roll out they have to do it all at once, so once again give it time. Balancing isn’t so much hard, as time consuming, also remember it has to go through committee this takes plenty of additional time.

Now then for some bonus fun lets look at both sides of this fun issue.

Warriors – Help I can’t do anything, this is because I’m an item based class and my items don’t keep up with monster equipment, abilities, or overall strength. In the end I’m totally dependent on other classes, show me a little love so I can stand on my own.

Magic-Users – Help! My spell advancement ends at twenty or more effectively seventeenth. They never get better, sure I can get through any Spell Resistance by 25th but I’m unable to deal damage unless I have a summon and go into melee! This is because of insane monster spell immunities or resistances so it takes more then two spells to fry a creature! Also I’m stuck spamming the same couple of still useable spells till the Team wants to throttle me! Please give me some versatility so I can have style, and use beyond ‘buff monkey’ for the fighters with sunburst?

You notice that the magic users are a little more verbose, their problem is slightly more complicated because of the previous efforts to bring them in check. Previous efforts which everyone knows (but not everyone admits) didn’t work to well. The warrior problem is simple, but they are in the end a simple but elegant class type to play.

In conclusion, the team is aware of this problem. It has been aware for some time, and this major issue has been worked on for a while and is being worked on right now. It is probably the most important thing on the team’s plate at the moment, as it effects everyone. Leanthar stated it in his original version three post that we would be moving to medium magic, I can only think of one reason for that to happen and this is it.

So please have patience, when they roll out the big balance fix we can decide for ourselves. If they don’t do a very good job, trust me I’ll be complaining loudest. I’ve been waiting longest after all and I have lots of pent up annoyance.

Give it time, patience is a pain to have and till then you’re a walking punch line but its all we can do.

Roleplaying / Re: RPing Intelligence
« on: April 06, 2007, 10:45:03 pm »
Intelligence represents a character’s memory, reasoning, and learning ability, including areas outside those measured by the written word... wizards, who must have keen minds to understand and memorize magical spells... Page 22 Players Handbook Second Edition.

Intelligence determines how well a character learns and reasons... Page 9 Players Handbook Third Edition.

Well that’s why I tend to quote second edition it actually goes into enough detail to determine something.  Now then using these two simple statements as my own person reasoning I come to the conclusion. That a character of ten intelligence, a normal human being in which ninety percent of the population is, should be quite capable of plans. Even intricate plans if given enough time. However because these characters and people have only average intelligence they are going to make mistakes, big mistakes. They will not in any way be able to anticipate real life situations on the paper unless they spend a lot of time planning and even then flaws will happen. This into itself would be the biggest separation between a person of average intelligence and exceptional intelligence. The time it takes to accomplish the same mental task. Not to mention it can be said that they will forget key things. A normal person with a notebook can be as dangerous as a genius.

Wisdom described a composite of the character’s enlightenment, judgment, guile, willpower, common sense, and intuition. – Page 23 Players Handbook Second Edition.

Wisdom describes a character’s willpower, common sense, perception, and intuition. While Intelligence represents one’s ability to analyze information, Wisdom is more related to being in tune with and aware of ones surroundings... Page 9 Players Handbook Third Edition.

Wisdom will also always play a key factor in plans. While intelligence may grant you the ability to create a great and detailed plan, and even perhaps remember the details. Wisdom allows you to go through with the boring parts, double check and clarify parts, simplify sections and notice errors, and take into account outside sources that can put the wrench in your plans.

A person with average or low intelligence and likewise low or average wisdom could come up with a great plan and pull it off. But it would take a great deal of work and would involve lots of dumb luck to avoid all sorts of pitfalls. See 'Video Game Heroes for Console Games – The original Hlintites.’ However that said you might have a brilliant plan on how to get a bunch of money out of the Lucindites by selling a fake relic of the Black Wizards. Your slightly above average intelligence coupled with some planning makes it look believable. Unfortunately your average wisdom score and average luck just don’t come through for you. Another natural schemer shows up on the scene and takes note of your attempts and decides that your blackmail fodder. Your plan didn’t take that into account, how could it? That fell 'outside the plan’ perhaps with a high enough wisdom (or a lot of time) you could have had backup plans just incase something like this happens. Better luck next time, assuming you live that long dear scoundrel.

Average intelligence isn’t into itself crippling towards the wayward planner, scoundrel or noble. However to achieve desired results much more time and effort has to be put into things, and sadly 'human error’ gets a much louder voice. The more clever individuals just have an edge, fortunately some time in the library studying logic and philosophy might just let you beat those pointy hat wearing, dress garbed, spell flingers yet. As for wisdom that can be a bit trickier, but for the laymen. Spend some time asking yourself 'how can this part go wrong’ and you might just outflank the predators in life.

Edit: Hat wearing not had wearing, can you wear had?
