*hugs*  I understand.

"What are you depressed about?"  is another one - I hate it when I'm asked that.  If I knew specifically, I'd change it, or fix it, or learn to cope with it, but it's nothing so easily quantifiable.  "Too young/pretty/lucky/whatever" to be depressed; I don't think there's such a thing.

Great post, but I'd just like to add that to get the little tree icon (all those buttons, actually) as an option, you have to be in the Rich Text Editor, the button found in the lower left hand side of the screen after you select the quick reply (the reply button on the actual post you're replying to, not the window at the bottom of the screen).

I don't habitually use it, and thought perhaps others didn't either.

That's a shame, I know that we had a friend who experienced similar when he came to Layonara (but he's notorious for getting bored quickly).  I look at things like this - it's a busy town, people are doing their thing, either they'll help you out or they won't.  I'm pleased if they do, but expect they won't.  My characters also expect similar.

Sometimes, like when I'm wondering what the heck to do with a dice bag, I hope they won't.  Roll dice at me, and I'll just sit here in a flurry of indecision. ;-)

Jysphaer.  Now I have a problem here in that I don't know which of the two identical portraits in my folder is hers, so I'll post these ones, but if it doesn't seem to be working, please change the file names to po_el_f_187_(whatever letter without the brackets around).  I'm fairly certain this is the right file, but if someone can point me in the right direction of how to check for sure, I'd be really grateful.

Roleplaying / Re: Guys Roleplaying Gals
« on: November 07, 2006, 04:21:43 pm »
I know of a lot of guys who play girls.  It doesn't indicate gender or sexuality, and having been on World of Warcraft for a very long time, you actually start to feel that every female you meet is played by a male even though you yourself (well, me) were an exception to the rule.  Mind you, RP was extremely rare on that game, especially towards the end of my time there.

Some "girls" you can tell are really guys, but others you just can't.  Once upon a time I would have said that most girls who were dressed in very little were probably guys unless they had a good RP excuse for it (Brisbane was an example of the latter), but these days I've played girls who didn't wear very much either (with just as much of an RP reason for it as for the ones who dressed neck to floor).

I do have a tip for guys who want to play girls though: don't play them like females in an anime - that's usually a big tip off, right there.

I also know a number of girls who play males - I should try that again sometime.

//*chuckle*  My newest character just spent a couple of hours out in the snow chatting this evening (my time), and all the way along, there were comments about the cold, how much they hated the snow, etc. - yet no one went in, even though it was suggested a couple of times.  It's about flow of conversation and breaking it to move inside; also, I remember that it's kind of creepy to be chattering away and suddenly find some drunk breathing down your neck, as (used to) happens in the Wild Surge.

I haven't played here in some time, and miss Layo and the RP here greatly.  To read that this kind of thing has gone on is distressing to me, who always has held Layo as a bastion of excellent RP.  I give the GM team major kudos for tracking all this down and Leanthar for taking steps to eradicate it, but I do have to say: how disappointing that sods like this had to drag the attention of the GMs away from the quests and excellent RP to have to attend to something so sordid?  Those people should be ashamed of themselves.

I would say that with emotes that don't refer to a person you know, and are the type where you need to specify who they are directed at, then *waves to Kutay'I* is fine.  They serve as OOC notification to the _players_ who the emote is directed at.  Even if the character doesn't know that name, anyone around (who may or may not know the story behind Kutay'I and know her as something else) will immediately know it's directed at that person over there with that name floating over her head, and not, say, to them.  It serves as a marker for anyone RPing around them who the emote was directed at.

Of course, if that player then chooses to RP *waves to Kutay'I*  "Hiya Kutay'I!  My name is (blah)", then they need a slap on the wrist.  I don't believe in knowing someone's name before you meet them.

It's been too long, journal, since I wrote in you.  Since I had the heart to even think about my old travels, since I remembered my old friends and the trials and tribulations in and around Hlint.

My heart dies within me here, journal.  Mother insists I remain now that I've returned, but I didn't come back to see her and "reclaim myself as an Aasimar" as she says.  I had to see him again, but of course Mother would use him as a trap for me.  You can justify anything in the name of Good, can't you, Mother?

The sweet whisper of wind in the trees
Call to me, ever call to me.
My life out beyond forever denied to me.
Calls ever out to me.

Just for Fun / RE: Names, Where Do They Come From?
« on: June 04, 2005, 01:02:00 pm »
The names of my characters all came from me sitting here agonising over the character submission screens, twisting syllables around to see what I could create that sounded appropriate for the race I was creating.

"Maedhras" I later found was a real name - or as real as a Tolkein derived name gets - though as I'd just come to Layo from a Tolkein based Permanent World, I'm not surprised that was what I came up with.

"Ambryn" was a bit of a joke name though. On an RP MUD I spent a lot of time on, I had a very well received dark elven bard named "Brynnam". I was sitting here agonising over the submission thread, wondering what I could call a good, sweet bard (as opposed to a dark, cynical, nasty horror of a bard) when it it me - why not make it the opposite of Brynnam? Take the "am" from the end and stick it at the front and voila - Ambryn. And the name Brynnam originally came from a teenage idol of mine having a daughter named Brynn.

First of all, for those who have blasted me for "leaving" Layonara, I will come back someday.  After all, I still occasionally haunt these forums, don't I?  ;-b

Secondly, I would agree with what Zhofe has said.  Though I understand that a lot has been done to rectify the levelling problems since I disappeared (the death system in particular) it wasn't a lot of fun to be only able to log on for a small amount of time and feel like you weren't getting anywhere.  That would scare people off, as levelling AND RP makes a game fun.  Which I why I know I'll be back in the end, because while it's very easy to level on the game I'm playing now *coughworldofwarcraftcough* the sheer number of idiots that don't have any clue what "Arpee" is makes me want to scream.  They have a tendancy of coming to the RP realms to peeve those of us who try to RP, I'm sure.

And if "Astroboy" runs past me again...

Roleplaying / RE: Leveling
« on: March 25, 2005, 04:37:00 pm »
Another way of doing it would be to speak in terms of what spells/skills you've learned.  Instead of refering to "level 10", you can say you now know how to {insert appropriate skill or spell learned at that level by that class here}.

I'd also try not to use the newly used ability until I could get back to town and RP that I've learned it somewhere, but I digress.
