General Discussion / RE: Too many people in GM events.
« on: July 13, 2005, 09:06:00 am »
Wahg, you beat me to posting about it

But yeah, my post is a little more long-winded, more example-filled version of what he just said, with a few things added.

And incidentally, what I'm suggestng isnt really a replacement for the system in place. Its just a suggestion for something that could be added, as well as something I'd love to do myself. I mean, for 'big' quests, you obviously can just whip one out in a day or two . . . it takes some time to set up. I'm talking about the occassional spontaneous quest, maybe a few a day, depending on who's around (and what they like to do). And theyd be aimed at more lower-leveled characters, since theres already PLENTY to do for the higher-levels, as is evidenced by who all signs up for the calendar quests. I mean, a ninth level char isnt too useful against people going up into the dark rift, now is he?

General Discussion / RE: Too many people in GM events.

I actually have thought alot about what was suggested about the 'office hours' before. Not in quite those terms, but a sort of similar idea. I have actually seen a LOT of comments about how there dont seem to be enough quests for the US-based 9-5 workers, with most of the quest being held either VERY early, or VERY late (relative to us).

That got me thinking, and wondering about how to become a DM here on layonara. Admittedly, I have only a smidgin of experience with the dm client, and that was when NWN first came out 4 years ago. Regardless, I got thinking about it because of a particular thing that happened to my character, Vorkresh the Goblin. I still have no idea how I might become a DM, but that is another subject.

In some of the FAQs, they mention GMs just randomly dropping monsters on players, or placing the odd out-of-place monster in a nearby area, or something to that effect. I actually had this happen. One of the DMs (I have no idea who), I guess was watching Vorkresh killing a couple of the Red Light Goblin Scouts. After looting the bodies, Vorkresh wandered back down the slope, and ran smack-bang into a gelatinous cube . . . right outside Hlint. The cube chased a hollering Vorkresh (who had no clue what the thing was) all the way into Hlint, getting all the way to the tavern before it was killed by some of the other players.

Needless to say, while the occasional stray goblin, orc, or bird wandering into Hlint isnt uncommon, a gelatinous cube is NOT the sort of thing you see everyday.

What if, say, instead of being chased, Vorkresh had returned to Hlint, recruited a couple friends, and gone back out to kill it? Perhaps they could have found evidence of an evil mage who was preying on low-level adventurers nearby, and set out to find and kill him, eventually tracking him to a cave just past the wizards tower and killing him. . . and perhaps more could occur even after that, such as finding a holy emblem belonging to a distant temple among the wizards stolen loot, and the players decide to return it, etc etc. And after each key 'event', the DM could surreptitously award some exp to the players, based on roleplaying and actions in the quest.

A DM could easilly engineer something simple like that by creating one or two stock NPCs (which I know there are several already), and possessing them (and/or monsters), in order to create a very simple quest that might take an hour or so. They could then locate a player of a reasonable level for the encounter, and give them the 'hook' for the quest. The players wouldnt even necessarily know there was a DM involved either right away. But there is so much good roleplaying of characters in layonara, I bet such events would EASIILY be managable on the fly. I mean, Ive only been here what, a month maybe, and Vorkresh has helped (and been helped) in several spontaneous endeavors that were just random things that occured due to good roleplaying.

I would love to see more of that, ESPECIALLY with the lower-level characters. I figure it might take a couple of days or so to come up with each event, but then each one could also be performed more than once, with different groups of adventurers at different times of the day (or on different days, between set-up times). Of course, these wouldnt have to be world-shaking quests, just small things for the odd adventurer in thier spare time, but it would give much, much more variety to what low-level characters can expect. And of course . . . theres always the possibility that rumors would start to fly as people mentioned oddities to one another, and facts would be linked and rumors would be compared, and maybe . . . just maybe . . . someone will piece together a big picture, and decide to do something about it. . . .

Condensing Fact from the Vapor of Nuance. . . .

Yeah, I agree. Anyone can pick up a sword and attempt to swing it at someone, provided they are strong enough to lift it. They might even hit the target, too. Hence the -4 (though personally, I think the minus should be higher, but -4 is the penalty limit for almost everything)

Layonara Server / RE: Orcs with hand grenades?
« on: June 21, 2005, 09:59:00 pm »
I actually do have a problem with it, but not because of how it happened. Vorkresh has had this happen before too, but he was lucky and wasnt in the blast radius. He then killed the skeleton that had thrown the bomb, and found ANOTHER firebomb on him.

Firebombs have a required level of 9. So WHY can a skeleton use one, and not a 5th level character? Or a 7th level wizard, for that matter?

I think theres something vastly unfair about enemies not having to follow level restrictions.

Ive also seen skeletons use scrolls of Endurance and other scrolls as well . . . its one thing for it to spawn with weapons anyone could use, but class-restricted and level restricted items really ought to still impose limitations on the creeps.

Edit: Not that I mind seeing enemies use items. I kind of like it, because it can spice things up. Its just annoying when a creep uses an item thats wildly inapropriate (like a skeleton with a heal potion or a scroll). But, if even a lowly orc or skeleton can use an item, everone else should be able to, unless its also some sort of racial item for the orc, etc.

Also, yes, there were 3 quests scheduled for today, so there are a ton of people on, and most arent in Hlint.

Fixed Bugs / RE: Second Rune of Dispelling
« on: June 21, 2005, 04:02:00 pm »
Ah, but consider that in the D&D system a mage can always dispel his own spell effects that hes cast on himself. We have no way to do that. . . and sometimes, you just dont want to rest yet because you dont need to.

I think it would be a nice idea.

Yeah, I did the same thing for my first character. I got it fixed quite shortly. Just be polite, and our DMs are very helpful.

General Discussion / RE: new gobbo skin
« on: June 21, 2005, 03:46:00 pm »
As far as I know, the model comes with its own head. The reason is that the whole body is covered with various paints, and the head needs to match. If you havent seen it yet, the skin is grey, with green and yellow paint all over the body. The over-all effect is pretty good.... they blend right into the grass. I wouldnt be surprised if people will start walking by Vorkresh and not even notice him.

Another word though, if you use armor . . . you'll look just like a halfling. I dont know if this is a bug that hasnt gotten worked out yet or not, I need to ask Atlas. You'll look ok if your a goblin wizard wearing robes, but I havent tried hats yet.

The Voice can be seen anywhere, its a result of the languages engine, if I'm not mistaken. Just ignore it, I think its a bug (sort of) that sometimes you can see it.

General Discussion / RE: Where oh where have the half-dwarves gone?
« on: June 21, 2005, 07:07:00 am »
Ah, no, I'm not talking about for Layo in specific, just wondering what people thought about Half-Dwarves in general. Thanks for the name. . .I knew there was one, but couldnt remember. I never owned anything with Dark Sun, but knew quite a bit about it from various sources since I was really into psionics.

And no, in the 2nd ed Elves handbook there are not actually stats given out for variant half-elves, there is a section that discusses it briefly.

Edit: Also, your right about there not being any half-elf variants in 3.5. At least, there arent any that I can think of. But I seem to recall one in one of the Forgotten Realms 3.0 books. I'll have to look through my mound of manuals and see if I can find it.

This week Vorkresh began great journey with many adventurers. We go to investigate things around Hurm, and find out about missing Sea Elf named Carocsa. Also fight many many many sharks, some of whom try to eat Vorkresh. Vorkresh also get face bitten, but sea elf lady help Vorkresh back to health.

Vorkresh is happy to journey with so many great an powerful adventurer, but is a little afraid. Vorkresh afraid get lost, or have to fight big monster and get squished while others fighting, because Vorkresh is not strong at all, not like friends.

Tomorrow, we continues journey.

Half elf is always bred with human.

Actually, in the Elven Handbook it describes a number of possibilities for half-elfs not descended from human stock. There are even some examples in a few of the Faerun handbooks from 3.0, if I'm not mistaken.

Ah, but some of the Half-Templates can be applied to any humanoid race, so it would stand to reason that there could be Half-Dragon dwarves, or Half-Celestial or Abyssal dwarves. Why couldnt those breed together, and eventually form some sort of Half-Dwarf race?

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / RE: Demon Card Game - Grandstands?
« on: June 20, 2005, 08:07:00 pm »
Sounds like an interesting idea to add the stands... It would also give players who were waiting around something to do.

And actually... I dont even know what demon card is. I'm still relatively new to Layo.

General Discussion / RE: Pickpocketing.
« on: June 20, 2005, 07:52:00 pm »
The main problem is that pickpocketing hurts other players, which is why it is usually banned. I mean, it would be one thing if you could only steal gold, because that can generally be earned again with little trouble, but there are still those it would hurt. For instance, a 5th level character generally has almost no money, and it takes time to get more. Even losing a paltry 200gp is painful and will require a fair amount of work to re-claim.

Also, as noted, with no PvP at all, there is no way for a character to redress grievances if a thief were to be caught. Not to mention that pick pocketing is, in effect, another form of PvP.

*Scrawled messily below the others* Oh, oh, Vorkresh will wants to join to become great wizard. Vorkresh only be small goblin, but very smart, and learn new spells well if someone teach Vorkresh.

//I can be on most anytime until I get a new job, though I'm usually on at the crack of dawn GMT (aka 9 pm PST onward)

Actually, being new and wandering around alot to look at the rules, I found the limit was four somewhere. Though I know that L really needs someone to go and clean up / update all the various rules postings hanging around, so I could be wrong.

Until I get into a quest groove and start running scheduled quests, expect to see that Small Black Cat in Hlint come to life and start playing with you... or that drunk in the bar demand a drink from you. ;) Won't really be a quest, but it'll be something to do for us both.
P.S. All levels will be allowed on my quests however you'll need to be careful... I'm going to make it a point to possess wizard/cleric NPCs that you'll be fighting and use the nastiest spells on you all so... Beware!
Hmm, so was it you then that was making the Undertaker drink like mad in the Wild Surge? He was drinking and dancing like crazy. I got a huge laugh out of it.

The only problem is that, running a mac, there really isnt any way for me to do that. At least, not that I'm aware of.
