General Discussion / Re: weapon finesse question
« on: September 13, 2006, 02:21:52 am »
Well, you couldn't have taken it at first level either, because rigues have 0 base attack bonus at that level, and the feat requires +1. You probably took it at third level, when you gain a feat and rogues have +2 base attackk bonus. And, Davaeorn, Weapon Finesse doesn't apply to all attacks, just those with light weapons, which means shortsword-sized or smaller weapons and some exceptions, suc as the rapier and the whip. Unarmed strikes are considered light weapons, that's why you get to apply weapon finesse to them. If you have weapon finesse and equip a greatsword, you should see a drastic decrease in your attack bonus.

Cheers!

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Re: PC constructs
« on: August 29, 2006, 02:02:34 pm »
I don't know, how the hell are warforged overpowered? Honestly, every single time I made a warforged in a PnP game, he died, regardless of how well the others fared. They get affected by both humanoid- and construct-targetting spells and effects. Sure, they get a few nifty things: not needing to breathe, sleep, or eat, get an armor bonus and can be enchanted as if they were armor, a 1d4 slam attack... yeah, they're pretty good, but they don't get nearly close to overpowered with a smart DM, which is something we have no shortage of here in Layo.

//I don't want to buy it, just make a correction. It doesn't cast sleep twice a day. It casts sleep two times and then the staff disappears from your inventory. Sorry if it sounds a bit rude, but  didn't want anyone to be disapponted because they spent 1200 gold on an item they thought was better than it actually is.

Also thinking, if Layo 2 keeps the restriction of 5 levels minimum in multiclassing, it will seriously gimp the Eldritch Knight. 2 levels of fighter and 8 of wizard is usually the accepted practice, and 5 levels of fighter will end up giving only one feat and 1 BAB more than fig2/wiz8/ek10, while losing 2 spell levels. Just something to think about. I think as long as it isn't a pure wizard with the NWN martial weapon proficiency feat, any number of fighter levels is ok, since even if they only take 1 or 2 fighter levels they'll be behind the other wizards.

Frenzied Berserker is not the same as Battlerager. Battlerager is a PrC for dwarven barbarians and Frenzied Berserker is a barbarian that gets so many bonuses to his rage he has to ask the wizard exactly how much damage he's dealing because he can't do the math.

I understand the lag problems, but Etinfall, IRL you don't have bags that magically reduce the weight of stuff you put in them.
And jrizz, the problem with reallism is that the point at which you are heavily encumbered in NWN according to your strength is actually when you're carrying as much as you can in PnP. For example, for 10 str, I believe we get to carry 100 lb before we are encumbered. In PnP, with 10 str, you can carry up to 33 lb without being encumbered, 34 to 66 lb encumbered, and 67 to 100 lb heavily encumbered. It's just that Bioware decided that, since in PnP you are usually a 4-man team and in NWN you are alone, you have to carry everything yourself(remember that in the original NWN you couldn't control your henchmen's inventory).
I think the best way to prevent this is to alter the encumberance system to resemble that of PnP.
Thisis where the table for encumberance is at, in ase anyone wants to check it.

I understand the "internal struggle", but what if a tiefling didn't struggle, but embrace its devil heritage? I'd say definitely LN or LE then. As I understand it, many people want to play a lawful tiefling, because currently we have NO race traditionally aligned as Lawful Evil. Drow, Orcs Goblins are CE, and half-ogres are more chaotic as I understand it. This leaves us the tiefling to turn to, but the only way for us to play a tiefling is either CG or play a LOT till CN. I don't know about the others, but I myself have always liked to play lawful tieflings, especially LE. Now, I understand that evil is rare, but we should at least be able to keep the lawful part. As it stands, the only way of us playing a character with an evil racial influence is with a CE influence, which is not appelative to many. I believe that the tiefling alignment restriction should be changed to "Any Nongood", but that's just me. I do understand that some people like their CG tieflings, but I think it's WAY more plausible to have a LN than a CG tiefling.
Now, I only have to get people to actually hate drow and goblins instead of being nice to us, but that's a rant for another time...

Layonara Server / RE: Quest GM Applications are now open!
« on: August 14, 2006, 04:33:35 pm »
Hey there. Think I'm gonna give this a shot and try to get the power to overrun the world with halflings. Kidding, of course. I'm gonna overrun the world with halfling wizards.
  • List any DM/GM experience that you have and when the last time you performed this function. This is not a requirement. I have DMed mostly short adventures for my DnD group, though I have a campaign in the works set in the world of Eberron that I plan to start as soon as we are back to school and as such can keep in touchmore regularly. • Have you GM’d using NwN? If so please list for what world(s)/module(s) and for how long. This is not a requirement. No, I haven't, though I did play through that DMFI module some time ago, and will definitly play it again if I am chosen to be on the team. • Describe why you want to be a GM in Layonara. The main reason is a bit selfish, but it's because I like to make stories and adventures but my PnP group seldom gets together, only two or three people are together most of the time. I want to have a place to run my adventures where I know they will be played. Other than that, I think there are few quests for low-level characters. I like the characters that are level 3-7, usually capable of taking care of stuff with a little luck but still fragile enough that a critical by an opponent will almost certainly kill them. It's when us players learn the most about our character's strengths and weaknesses and how to work well as a group. I think learning how to work well as a group is important in a party-based server such as this, so I want to help people learn. • Describe what Quest GM’ing means to you in Layonara. What do you think will be the outcome if you are chosen to be on the team? To me, Quest GM'ing means creating obstacles for the players to overcome, wether those obstacles are tough enemies or tight-lipped NPCs that hold vital information. It's like co-writing a book: I set the tone, the beggining, and some possible endings, and let the players write about how the characters go from the starting situation to the climax, to eventually solve the problems and get richer with insight. • How long have you been a member of Layonara? You need to have been active in the community for at least four months. One year, and one week left to two months. For some time I couldn't play because of some hardware problems, but now everything is alright, and I don't expect to have trouble again. • Do you wish to be a part time or full time Quest GM? I wish to be a part-time GM, though that is only because I won't be able to devote much time to GM'ing since I'm gonna enter the last three years of high school. I can easily get time for being here part-time, and I hope to someday upgrade to full-time, but for now I will stick to what little time I will have.
I'm gonna PM Leanthar with a quest as soon as I write it up, but it will take some time because I want to be original and not use a quest I have already run in PnP.
Also, I can't open the GM Primer. Don't know why, but I always get an error message. Is there some way for me to get it as a plain text or microsoft word format? Thanks in advance.

Development Journals and Discussion / Re: Zakathion's life experiences

Today, I made two trips to the Red Light goblin caves. The first was to slay the goblin leader. That time, I entered invisible and reached the spot, sent my raven to attract the leader, but he got a bodyguard too. I killed them both and was rewarded by Ronus with two hundred gold pieces and some old green boots that help me evade attacks.
In the second trip I went with Room the half-giant, Darun the dwarf, and Eghaas the mage. I got a lot of greenstone that I have already cut. The dwarf got lots of copper.
I forgot to mention in the last entry that I have beaten a jelly-like creature, which had inside an amulet which I later found out belongs to Ragrian, the halfling bard of the Wild Surge Inn.
Today, I defeated single-handedly a darksoul and got its essence. I was then killed by a spider. This troubles me, and I think I will give up my worship of Baraeon Ca'Duz so that I can wear a Cloak of Az'atta, which I heard offers excellent protection against poison. I never really believed their philosophy of life, I just got used to saying "For Baraeon!" and not harming spiders. It is not even logical for me to worship him, seeing as I have rebuked my life in drow society.
I have finally sold that stardust. I hope I can find some way of making quick money, perhaps a hunting circuit, so that I can buy the items I need.

I hunted the trade and market posts at many inns and taverns in Mistone for the best prices in the articles I wish to purchase, and in fact managed to find some excellent deals.

I will have to make a lot of money for everything nonetheless, but I will buy right away some gloves to increase my strength. This will help me immensely.

I am interested in these gauntlets of ogre power. Please seek out Zakathion in Hlint. I usually wear black or dark blue robes, with a large hooded cloak, have elven stature, and am sometimes accompanied by a raven. I will have your money as soon as you find me.

Today, I did a lot of things. I made a trip to the Blood Desert, where my strategy of using Ghostly Visage to absorb the manticore's needles saved the day, though it could have gone even better if people had listened to me some more. The thing is, Ghostly Visage can protect you from as many small cuts and bruises as you are afflicted with, even though it won't help much against a single strong blow. Since the manticores throw tiny needles, Ghostly Visage would protect you from all except those that hit critical spots like the groin or the head, which would have a reduced force. I suggested that the ones who had Ghostly Visage tried to attract the monsters' needles by attacking first. But those humans and surface elves for some reason decided to waste fireballs on such weak beasts. That sorceress could have instead hasted me, which would make me contribute much better to the fight.
We then went to the mines of Haven. I tried to offer my century of experience with fighting underground in cramped corridors, but they only listened when we went down to the second level. That's when they all noticed that, for some strange reason, our frontliners weren't always nearing death and our archers weren't getting hit by clubs. Why is that, you say? I don't know, it might have been for the shouting match I had with one of the frontliners, after which they all agreed to do it my way. The tactic was for the numerous archers to staybehind the bridge/corridor/doorway while two or three frontliners made a human wall to protect them by blocking the already narrow corridor with their bodies. The ogres had to come one by one, all in line, and as such would be the targets of everyone at the same time. Thus, we dispatched each ogre quickly and only exposed the fighters to one or two foes at the most, which they could handle easily. I also advised not to cast spells until the last level, as I read a book about a man named Kaizer Thell who lived in Haven and knew the mines as well as the palm of his hand. I couldn't avoid the odd spell cast by one of the mages who would stay nervous at seeing one ogre get past our defense line and shoot a missile. But I could save enough spellpower for us to defeat the leader and his two accompanying mages with some ease. I disposed of one ogre brute and one berserker myself, and helped slay both mages and the chieftain. It was a glorious victory, but somehow some more ogres were hiding and attacked us while we mined the platinum. I fell immediately, but my companions managed to escape, though later on I found that Raine, the wizard who helped me with the rats and was with us, fell too. Anyway, we both waited for them to come out, and then went to deliver the head of the chieftain to Lord Rodor of Haven Castle. He rewareded us with eight hundred and fifty gold pieces!
Unfortunately, I had to spend it all on a crafting badge and supplies, as I want to learn how to make wands and scrolls, light armor and clothes, tinkering for making components for my other crafts, cooking for baking scrolls for scribing, alchemy, gemcrafting for magical jewelry and infusing, and wood crafting for sawdust to make scrolls with. Yes, I know I have made many plans, but though it will require a lot of hard work, it will allow me to save money, get richer with the experience, and get magical power to defeat my foes.
I also gave twenty skeleton knuckles to a woman who dwelled in the swamps, who made me an amulet to better protect me against undead. I also helped fill Lieutenant Jursen's weapon locker with manymelee and ranged weapons, for which he rewarded me with headgear capable of creating a magical field of force shaped as my body around me, enveloping me and protecting me as much as a suit of scale mail, only without the weight. I decided to save up for some scale mail or chain shirt, to wear when I do not plan on relying on my arcane skills as much as on my fighting prowess.
I have found another small bag of stardust, again from Kithairien's constellation. Later on I tried to use it but the jaguars got to me before I could hit them with my temporarily masterful prowess. I am now waiting in the Wild Surge Inn, meditating on my death and writing my journal. I made my first attempts at tailoring, succeeding in making some cloth out of cotton. It would seem this is one of the crafts most suited to my natural abilities.
I have noticed that I am writing a lot, and if I keep up this pace I will have to carry so many books I wouldn't be able to move. Thus, I have decided to write only when something remarkable happens, or when I fear I may forget something important.

Today, I was treated to a display of magical power that I could not have imagined in my wildest dreams. I was coming out of the crypts, and while I dusted my robes I felt the ground start to shake. Not just a little shake, but the kind that makes you jump ten feet into the air! Then I saw meteors falling from the sky, and thought, "The fools. Saying the Blood is no more! My books may be a little exaggerated on the details, but they are based in one reality: evil never dies." I cast an elemental resistance spell, which I knew wouldn't help much but would hopefully be enough to give me the time to run to Fort Llast. When I stepped outside, though, I didn't see a human clad in blood-red full plate and wielding a scythe at the center of the storm of meteors: I saw a halfling. Yes, a humanoid the size of my arm was conjuring that. I recalled the epics I had read and deduced it must have been the (in)famous sorcerer Reggub Hillhop. Realizing this, I walked away, not wanting to be in the middle of such destruction again. I decided to focus on my tasks to distract myself: I was to hunt a will-o'-wisp for Mage Dalton of Fort Llast. It was a tough battle, including a trip to the bindstone for me, but in the end I was victorious, though I must invest in better protection, as the will-o'-wisp hit me with a lightning bolt through my Endure Elements spell. I should also consider some armor, as my shielding spells tend to be short-lived, but for now I've gotten used to be free of extra weight that would prevent me from casting spells.
I have bought a two-headed mace, or dire mace as it is most commonly called. A fearsome weapon, it allows me to defeat those skeletons much faster and easier. I hope one day I am able to buy a house, where I can build a gymnasium to practice every weapon I can acquire. Maybe even teach others how to fight or cast spells. Yes, that is an option to consider.
