Yes I also applaud PnP for his work. My greatest regret is that have to work during most of these events.

Yes I suppose it pays to travel with a DM or be a World leader.  Yes it very much feels like favoritism to me.  Yes the very higher ups look like a protected class.

But well...... The kings don’t eat rancid meet while their lords have fresh venison!

D&D is a feudal society as are all the other fantasy games and or books I've seen.  The peasants don’t get the benefit of doubt and should not when it comes to DTs.  If we can rise through the ranks, then other peasants will point at us and yell that we eat fat while they eat lean.  Consider how dull would a Marxist utopia be to role play in?  (Shudders)

I think most of these talks complaining about high level characters getting special favors are silly.  Of course they do, they likely should and until we catch up we are jealous or I am anyway but I think that’s as it should be.  In a perfect world we would all have a DM watching us.  But that’s never going to be possible.

Sometimes DMs will have to make a judgment call on something and we may not agree with it.  Oh well it’s not our call to make.

If you like to think in a role playing manner, assume the DMs are minor gods. What I recall from mythology was that the gods are capricious and its best for mortals to give them their due and stay out of their way.

It’s the fact that there is permadeath, other players and real gods (DMs) who make decision that makes me enjoy playing in a PW and in this one in particular. Will they make the same call I would all the time?  Of course not and if they did it might be as if I was the DM for my own characters then it would feel like playing the single player game.  Blast I died hmm….. reloads.

After a trip back home I found my copy of The Proper (smiles) and Real D&D rules.  Yes Im old and its my old copy (bought in 1976 or close to that) of the white box paperback D&D rules.  If you have a chance read these and be alarmed how far the PnP game has degenerated in an effort to make everybody happy.  I digress but death was a different affair.

Death was a permanent condition.  A cleric could raise you and "if" you survived the ressurection you would be alive but lose a CON point permenantly.  DMs had fun watching you try to spread load the gear of the dead person and carry them back to a temple. We should go back to that and no lag whining.  If the weather is bad dont go out.

With that rant over I think the DTs system works fine and gives me a bit of a feel for the old game.  Unfair to front line fighters but so be it, we can always hang back and claim our backs hurt or multiclass. If Thrain gets to his 9th he will (lvl lock himself) retire to Shoufal and open and inn, drink ale and tells lies to young adventurers who stop buy.

We all want to be the protagonist (sp) so we all want to lvl asap to keep pace with the others.  This is normal and healthy I think.  people go on quests for a lot of reasons but EXP is one of the main ones. No ? you say? well ask yourself how many quests you would do for no DM exp?

First time I went on a quest I thought the DM was drunk for giving so much XP.  90% of the characters did nothinging because the other 10% yapped all the time.  So I sat there, bashed 2 things and got a wild amount of EXP.  Reduce the quest EXP gain from DMs,  that will stop a lot of the quest leeches from making quests a dull (because they yap all the time) and make people who want to RP stay on the quests. No need to reward the fast type crowd and further more there is often plenty of EXP just bashing on a quest. The DM exp award is great, I love it, but I see no reason for it.

In the end I would have to vote no on limiting quests.  With that said sometimes there seems like two worlds on Layo with the regular world and the quest world in which many things happen but only a few are in on it.
