Well as virtual realities become just realities due to things like quantum computing and neural transference, and yet as human nature and society  remains woefully lagging behind it's technology, was it any wonder that some bureaucrat who can't even install Windows XP would eventually decide to screw it all up for the rest of us?

Well, at least we now know what Skynet uses.

Now quick, some one get off a memo to John Conner before the machines attack.

Well thats nice to hear, does that mean then that some things about traps will be changed?

General Discussion / Re: EVERYONE DISCUSS!
« on: December 11, 2006, 04:57:12 pm »
I'm sorry if anyone feels this is off topic. But I think this 'Love it, or leave it' talk that can be tossed out here is related to the problem. I read that, and I'm gonna think, so what is this server about? Well it appears to be, play, shut up, and don't mouth off about your petty gripes.

I'm not saying that is peoples intention when they post it. But, it is not to hard to take it that way.

Like for example, I as a player have some issues with how poison and trap making are in their current states in the game. And how it impacts the rogue class. Now imagine that I have never read these boards before, and I read that?

I'm not going to think to write an intelligent post explaining my stance and why I feel it is a problem that should be discussed. If anything it makes me wanna find a new server to play on. Because it appears the community isn't even open to hearing me out or discussing it. And will view me as just another complainer.

It in essece inadvertently enforces a lack of communication. Which is perhaps the thing we should avoid first and foremost.

What I'd like to believe people mean when they say that is, don't try and get everything your way. But yeah, if you do have an issue, toss it out and we'll talk about it.

Also, it kind of tosses weight to the perception of favoritism in a way, when you see sevral people going to support a staffers position on a topic. A staffer replies, and lays it out. Hey fine, that's the policy. Now five others respond, not to say they are, but they come off as yes men. Especially if they do not offer the slightest difference from the all ready stated point of a staffer. Let me state again, I'm not saying that is what happens. It is how it can be perceived, especially to a new user.

I just thought that was worth mentioning.

Uhm, what the hell, might as well.

I know a lot of people are gonna say I'm crazy here. But just because you never actively engage in, or contribute to favortism, does not mean it is not happening. And, I'm not saying it is, I'm am saying is it is incredibly easy to believe regardless of what one factually knows for people to assume and feel there is favoritism. I'm sorry guys, but you shoot yourselves in the foot with this one just by nature of the situation. You have a very well established community, a lot of long time friends, some are players, some are DM's, some are both....

And lets be honest, some of the long time players really need to develop better people skills. And not take for granted that everyone may not know everything Layonara.

I'll give you an example, my first time logging into the server to play my character, I was threatened in character, and out of with 'false' authoritive tells. What do I mean by 'false', well, lets just say some old time players here tend to think they can just decide to wear the old DM hat when talking to new players, and try to have authority they in no way have. And thats about all I'm going to say on that.

So do I think the guy was right? No. Do I think there is some creadence to what he said, uhm, yeah sure. But, it is sadly all something that is too personally linked to a perspective to ever sort out. Just my opinion there though.

General Discussion / Re: How does the Layonara volunteer staff treat you?
« on: December 11, 2006, 06:01:35 am »
Uhm, I know it isn't funny. But, uh, do you think anyone is all that eager to give a negative response if thats their honest feeling in the poll above after we just got through reading a rant about how our Tells are being read, and etc, etc? I mean, regardless of what the truth is, this may get twisted around by someone. Like I can pretty much see it now, 'See the only responses were posotive, people are afraid to say how they honestly feel.' LoL I know it is stupid, and absence of proof is no proof at all, but people who are conspiracy nuts or like relishing the rebel against the machine role live for a thing like this.

But, yeah, staffs been great to me.

Development Journals and Discussion / Re: I, Uilliam – Vol 1.
« on: December 11, 2006, 02:57:28 am »
~Depressed, miserable, and no longer caring really.~

Uilliam woke up in his apartment at the independent. A few empty bottles were on the bed with him. His mouth dry, and his head throbbed. Grumbling as he slipped out from under the covers, he went to sit up.

A good deal of bitterness was possessing him lately. He had worked hard to learn poison making, and had payed the price with bits of his soul when the spiders had brought him down. And despite his best efforts and practice, he was unable to do anything much with it. Even his trap making through his tinkering skills was at a stand still. Unable to collect the heavy amounts of ore he needed, on top of the failures when he did have it, everything was just seeming pointless now. As if he had wasted his life becoming a Wilderness Scout, learning the rogues discipline. After all, he had to crawl, and move slowly to hide and move quiet. But who had time for all that, when all you needed was some magic caster with an invisible spell handy. Just poof, and you were of running with your enemy none the wiser. Between that, the difficulty of making traps, and the complete waste of learning poisons, Uilliam didn't even feel like bothering to get out and doing anything anymore.

Even when he did, it didn't feel like he was learning anything new. All the fights seemed the same. And always there was the specter of loosing another strand on him. It was as his friend had once told him, 'Fighters fight, Casters cast, and Rogues get to be pummeled for their mistakes.' Which is exactly where he was now, being mauled on a regular basis as he tried to fill the roles of front line fighter, or part time archer, just doing whatever the groups he took up with needed. And it was getting him no where but to a early grave. Sometimes he even felt like not doing anything at all, just hiding in the shadows, looting the bodies of fallen enemies, and nothing more risky then that.

Finally hopping off the bed, he made his way over to the small washing bowl he kept on top of one of the trunks in his room. Splashing the near warm, and stale water on his face then looking down into his reflection on the water, he could see his eyes were as red as his hair after having drunken himself to sleep.

   “I hate my life.”

It was all he could say to himself in a mumble as he went to go place his clothes on. Half staggering as he walked across the floor to where the pile of clothes was on the floor.

Today he was just going to finish up some deliveries for the package master in Krandor, then go to the library in the Arcane tower in Port Hampshire. There he would do some research on what he had heard of Twin Lions at the meeting he had attended. Right now, trying to help with that, and see if it actually went anywhere was about all that was keeping him going. Everything else was just constant disappointment at the moment....

O.K. Weeblie, but whats more important? A system where there is more room for trust between staffers and community members? Or limiting the amount of times a player can risk their character taking reckless actions without consequence? In my expierience as a PnP DM, absolute charcter death is a bit to important an event to leave up to a game mechanic. And is an area that needs to be looked over by rational human judgement. But thats just my opinion. And as for playing with out respect for death, well thats an issue of bad roleplay. And should be addressed as such. In that a player be warned, then if it continures, not be allowed to come back.

Not to play Devil's Advocate here. But maybe it is time for a new system other then the Soul Strand one in it's current form? That is really the heart of the matter here I think.

See this is one of the odd cases where everyone can be wrong, and right at the same time. There are to many factors going back and forth here to ever try and say what is fair. Even more so is you have to balance community fairness with individual fairness. Bioware has a bug, people will abuse it, it leads to perceptions of favoritisim, etc, etc.

All I could think of to replace it with, and please this is just an individual idea lets not turn it into a 'Heres why your wrong' debate, is take it out of a automated process like the Soul Strand system is now. And say such things happen only in CDQ's, and GM Quest. Completely flip the situation from being 'I was alone when this happend and dont have a witness.' To 'There is no doubt a GM saw it, other players saw it, and we all know what happend.' I know it comes with it's own problems, and reworkings. But having a firm trust in the staff I feel is a lot more valuable then a game mechanic. And it will have just as many flaws and drawbacks as any other system I'm sure, I just think if trust is the main issue here, this would be one possible alternative.

But like I said. It's just an idea I'd throw out there. I'm sure people have lots of their own.

Did it, waiting to see how this one turns out. Tried player events before though, and ended up missing my own one cause people went and had it without me earlier in the day. LoL

*Seeing Pyyran's message, Uilliam takes a seat at the inn. Taking down the notice for a bit, he goes to write out his reply.*

Dear Mister Pyyran,

Thank you for the offer of assistance. Until the meeting, and a formal plan is laid down, I don't wish to start anyone off in a direction that may not be needed. However, I would be more then happy if you would except an invitation to attend our meeting, listen in, and offer whatever advice you can give from your expierience. Also, even though we are looking to establish a new place for and by the Children of the Earth races, there will no doubt be a place for Tall Folks who have, and will continue to have a, good relations with us. And part of that is by allowing them to see what we are looking to do, and be a part of what they feel they can help with. So thank you.

-Signed. Uilliam SeeksPeace.

// Warning acknowledged, no excuses, sorry.

*Naving stayed to the Shadows as he entered the Inn, Uilliam sees the 'humerous' reply left. So taking out his quill and ink he goes to give a response.*  'Wow, your right. With all us gone things may get a little boring for you Tall Folk. I guess people will just have to pass time by going to see your Mother more often.
  -Signed, Uilliam SeeksPeace.

Fellow Children of the Earth,

A time is now set for a meeting at the Hlint court house. It will be Seventy Five Days from now, at dusk. (RL time, Friday at Midnight, U.S. Central time.) I hope this will give you all ample time to make the trip and arrive safely.

Thanks.

Dear Friends and customers,

Sadly, for the time being, I am going to have to shut down my business. One issue is, people are quite simply asking for to high of amounts that I as one person can keep up with. I put the order limits in for this reason specifically, so I could deliver things quicker at less cost. However, so far a staggering amount of the orders I have received (Both here and in person.) have been for greatly oversized amounts that I can not manage physically due to weight, time, and personal risk.

So rather then raise my prices by a considerable amount, and contribute to the current problem of over pricing, I have decided to leave my Fetching Service for now in pursuit of other business ventures with my Halfling brethren. I'm sorry, for any inconvience this may cause you.

-Signed, Uilliam SeeksPeace.

P.S., Mister Pyyran, I have eight hops in my possesion for delivery to you. Please seek me out if you still wish to purchase them, thanks.

P.S.S. Sab, I may need some help in a new business I am starting with a few other Halflings. Please seek me out, and I'll do my best to see what work is available for you.

Mister Achnuman,

Right now the little company I have is not set up for something like mining the more hard to secure materials. However right now I am reaching out to a few people to see if we can establish an employee owned mining company, for which we would be the sole broker. It is my hope that we can start to make available these materials on the market at a more reasonable flat price. By adapting a specific protocol and plan for mining teams in each local, we hope to have the following items with these prices available to the public soon.

Copper and Tin ore, 22 True a piece.

Iron ore, Coal, 34 True a piece.

Platinum, Silver, and Gold ore, 52 True a piece. Plus a possible 'Risk' service charge due to the extremely dangerous working conditions our miners have to endure to aquire these materials.

As for minerals, we will probally adopt a by contract approach, looking at the specific mineral, the amount looking to be purchased, and the resources needed to retreive it, then giving a market price bid to fill the order. Minerals and Lumbers are kind of a problem item, as the effort to collect them can vary quite widely due to market conditions.

Right now the companies is looking to bring more general crafted items to market at reasonable price, such as heal potions an such.

-Signed, Uilliam SeeksPeace.

*Seeing Tyrian's and Tegan's writing, Uilliam takes out his quill and ink and goes to reply.*

~Miss Tyrian,

Yes Miss, there were a great many Halfling there that evening. And it slipped my mind as well. I would be glad to stop by, and discuss the rent and the rye, and will do so as soon as I am able.

-Signed, Uilliam SeeksPeace.~

*Then his reply for Tegan.*

`Miss Tegan,

I'm sorry to say, but I have a strict policy of no 'box of' orders. One of the ways I can keep my prices low is by time and weight. The less time I hold material, and the less weight I have to carry are of crucial importance. Also I do not have to pay for storage of stock then. I do deliveries on orders of no more then eight at a time on pickable materials, which I consider silk to be, which would be one hundred and twenty True each order of eight. I'm sorry, but we do this for both business reasons, and to help keep a balance in nature.

What you might be interested in though is as more partners come into the company, and are response time to orders increases, we will likely start a 'on demand' service, where for a flat fee a month we deliver a specific material exclusively to you (Twice a real life day.), in bunches of our normal quanity for the given item. We will keep bringing it till you tell us to stop. Regardless of how much we give you, it is the same price. However the exact details of that still are being worked out.

I hope that answers any questions you have, thank you. And I look forward to your business.

-Signed, Uilliam SeeksPeace.~

//There is also a good OOC reason for the no 'box of' orders. Full inventory boxes contribute to server lag. A condition I would like to help avoid. By me, and my other business partners keeping orders to what we can carry in our regular inventory, it greatly helps with the problem, and also lets us get things to people faster and lower cost. So if a person is willing to receive multiple deliveries, we can deliver a 'box of' quanity (35) in much less time, with much less server overhead.

Miss Dallorius,

Yes I can fetch you some rye. I'd be happy to meet you and discuss the exact amount of it you need, and the total with expenses. I usually spend my time when I am not working by the benches on Hlint's west side, between the Smithy and Bank. So please seek me out there, thank you.

-Signed, Uilliam SeeksPeace.
