Layonara Server / Re: Quest GM Applications are now open!

Application for part time Quest GM

To start with I understand the duties and responsibilies as stated above and I am willing and able to comply.

I believe I meet the qualifactions above.  I have been playing on Layonara for over a year and am fully on
board with the spirit and rules of the server.

• List any DM/GM experience that you have and when the last time you performed this function. This is not a requirement.
I have no experience DMing but I believe I am fairly creative and I am computer literate and able to
pick up new skills quickly.  In my case, I think the fact that I have never GM'd will be an advantage to my abilities
as hopefully my ideas will be fresh and add flavor to an already amazing place.

• Have you GM’d using NwN? If so please list for what world(s)/module(s) and for how long. This is not a requirement.
Same as above.

• Describe why you want to be a GM in Layonara.
There are three primary reasons why I would love to be a GM on Layonara.

1) I live in Hawaii and it seems that there is a shortage of GMs that have the flexibility to service the Pacific region.
Although there are a few on the west coast and some in Australia the time difference is always an obstacle and I don't
think there are any quest GMs currently in the Hawaii time zone.  My location would give me the flexibility to play in
PDT and Aussie time if needed to cover the time spectrum.

2) I have played here for a long time and have a great deal of respect for the team and the time commitment involved.
I think that adding to the GM pool would lessen the load on the other GMs and enhance the experience of the players
all around.

3) THE POWER (did I say that out loud)   Ignore that one.   Lets make number three the cool GM avatar  (with wings). *evil hope to be a GM grin*

• Describe what Quest GM’ing means to you in Layonara. What do you think will be the outcome if you are chosen to
be on the team?
Quest GM'ing is one of the primary things that makes Layo more than just a computer game.  Even with fixed quests there
are only so many things you can program a computer to do.  Having the human element to interpret and direct player actions
is the key to making the fantasy come alive.  GM's are not predictable and the players never know what is coming.  The
GM can react to player actions and take events in directions that no one thought they would go before the players started.
As far as outcome is concerned, I hope that I will be able to fill holes in the team and round out the ability to service
the Layo population.  Being new and inexperienced I would probably do mostly simple quest for small numbers of low level
to start with until I was comfortable with the interface and able to react to players better.  I hope to learn more about
NWN and grow in my own skills and ability to serve the team.

• How long have you been a member of Layonara? You need to have been active in the community for at least four months.
I have been playing on Layo for 1 year and 3 months all together although I did take a long break and come back due to RL
issues.  I have attended more quests than I can count and have been very impressed by the professional and mature abilities
of the volunteer team that makes Layo possible.

• Do you wish to be a part time or full time Quest GM?
I wish to be a part time GM to start and depending on how things go maybe increase the time later.

I have read the public Primer and can't wait to read the full copy if approved.

When you look at the racial information, one of the things it lists for the race is the ECL.  Its usually the last thing listed.  This is a measure of the XP penalty for the race.  No ECL listed means no penalty.  The higher the ECL the bigger the XP penalty for killing monsters than other races.  The ECL does not affect quest XP from either fixed quests or GM'd quests.  ECL goes to 3 at the highest I believe.

Remember that even if the rating says another character is "Impossible" to you that only means they are level 6 or higher so some may not be all as impressive as you think.  It doesn't take long to get to level 7 or so (maybe a week or two).  If you get with a group and run around doing the set quests and getting familiar with the lay of the land.

I really like that Summon Drow Monk spell that Sahala knows as well.  You can even raise him after he dies so he is almost immortal.  That is unless he dies three times in a short period.  Then Sahala has to resummon him and sometimes it takes a while for him to show up.

*picks up his journal and brushes the dust off of it* *coughs*

Well it has been a long time since I wrote anything about what's been going on.  We have continued to explore the mysteries of the ancient elves and the sea shrines.  We are making slow but steady progress.   The mysteries of the orb and the lich have been revealed and now we just need to seek a solution.  I still have this box.  I hope Ozy will be successful at setting a trap for the thieves.  Our group recovered the cloak that Epheris wanted and another group is going after the "light"  I have not heard from them.  I can't wait to help restore the Broken forext with Brisbane and the others.  I have been visiting Belinara more frequently lately.  Last night we went to the Fort of Last Hope.  This was the first time I had been to where Emerald is from.  It was very close to the site if Blood's defeat.  The crater there was the largest hole I have ever seen.  The enrgy released when the blood well was destroyed must have been enormous.  I really wish there was something that could be done to restore Belinara to its former state.  I will have to think more on this.

*closes his journal and places it back by the bedside*

NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Re: Wail of the Banshee broken?
« on: August 09, 2006, 06:06:33 pm »
Undeaths eternal foe protects against weird.

As far as the balancing of these spells is concerned, it seems a bit odd to me to make changes to spells as a result of player behavior.

I really don't have as much problem with this since my character is a Cleric and can choose any spells I want if they change but mages are very different.  Wizards choose the spells when they level based on their effects.  If you change the spell after the fact then the wizard can get stuck with bad spell choices of no fault of their own.  Sorcerers and bards can change spells when they level but that can still be a long time before they can get rid of bad spell choices.  The other problem with making changes to spells is that people who use them sometimes don't get the word about the change until they use the spell and it no longer works.  I have heard examples of players getting killed as a result and that's no fun.

I think for consistency sake the spells should be set in stone unless there is a very compelling reason to change it for overall game balance.  I would think those game balance issues would be almost non-existant at this point since Layo has been around a long time.  The premise of the original post that there is something wrong because too many people are choosing one spell or another is a bit strange to me.  That's like saying there's a problem when too many people go to a particular restaurant.  If one spell is better than another it makes sense that people would take that one over weaker spells.  I am not aware of an overriding need to make all spells equal.

I think if the team notices that spells are being used in ways that are not intended or getting an advantage that was not intended in a particular area or against a particular set of creatures, it's better to change the area or the creatures than to modify spells that affect all players.  If monsters change then let the adventurer beware applies.  There is no expectation that areas or monsters will always be the same but spells, feats, and class abilities are a very different story.

My bottom line is that I would like to see a much higher threshold for making changes that affect the way characters are built than for making changes to areas and enemies.

*looks through his spell book for the DM Invinciblity toggle spell*  Where is that blasted spell?  I thought clerics had access to every spell for each level.  I can't find this one.  Do I need a CDQ to get that one or is it an epic feat?  What's the spellcraft requirement?

Does skill focus or base Int modifier or anything else add to the spellcraft ranks for the prerequisite or is it just the base points put into the skill?

Fixed Bugs / Re: Mass Heal
« on: August 07, 2006, 05:57:58 pm »
The description is much better now but I have one more question.  What is the deity relation effect for mass heal?  Is it that the spell either works or doesn't work or is it a fraction of the effect or what?  Also I have never seen it not work on the target so is the deity relation only for others in the AoE or does it apply to the target as well?  Thanks.

The fear of a rust monster is directly proportional to the cost of your sword.  4th level fighter copper long sword, no fear.  19th level fighter adamantium greatsword with level 4 electric and level 4 titanium enhancements, RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!  Or just unequip the weapon and beat it with your fists.

Fixed Bugs / Re: Undeath's Eternal Foe
« on: August 01, 2006, 04:08:34 pm »
Well actually that would depend on who your deity was and your evangelical philosophy.  Rawkwin is a follower of Aeridin who respects all life and in particualr is not judgmental.  Rawkwin also considers it a way to sway people to follow Aeridin by portraying a great deal of respect for life even of those he may not agree with.  Another reason is that in a party every member is important and even a follower of an enemy deity may act to preserve the life of others in the group as long as they are alive so I think its a good idea to protect everyone when in group play even if the ultimate goal is the preservation of some few in the group.  When you are on a quest another reason is that you don't get to pick your company and as a courtesy to other players I consider it the job of the healer cleric to do all he can to preserve the life of everyone in the party.  So, there are actually a lot of in character and out of character reasons for it I think.
