General Discussion / Sorry for those on Arthenon's Curse
« on: October 10, 2011, 09:12:08 pm »
Looks like the server crashed and wiped out the entire set up I had planned.  Going to postpone the 2nd chapter of this Mummy's Tale for Monday, October 24th, per the wishes of the party at time of crash-recovery.  Hopefully I'll get quest server reserved so we wont run intot he same problem this time around, and keep my spawn a bit leaner n meaner.

General Discussion / Going to be missing for a week or more.
« on: September 23, 2011, 09:41:39 pm »
Finalizing the paperwork on the new place, making repairs to the old one and cleaning it out.  Only moving down the street, but the next week or two will be hectic for me.  Not likely to have internet access for a few days at the end of the month and the beginning of the next.  I will try to log into the forums oat work, but please don't be discouraged if any PMs get unanswered in the near future.

After I get Settled in:

1.  Going to try to run the next installment of "Unfriendly Competition" some time mid-late October.  Inspired by some Miami Vice themes and the dark underbelly of the commercial underworld.  Will try to keep you posted with rumors.

2. Dorandite GCDQ?  I'll try my hand at that.  Look for updates in between and will try to run that during late October, Early November.  I'd run it now if I wasn't knee deep in boxes.

3. Will keep up with the forums from work meanwhile.  And try to find some time to sneak in for an impromptu or two, schedule permitting.

Rumour Has It / Blackhearted Bart brought to Justice
« on: August 25, 2011, 01:00:05 am »
Let it be known that the group of Aden Delaveth and Charlie and Katelyn Poetr are to be commended for their service to the law and the security of Mistone for bringing the notorious criminal Captain Bart the Blackhearted to justice.  A slaver, murderer and by all other accounts a villain to the very core, Captain Bart's ship had recently been wrecked following a sea battle with King's Fleet outside the coast of Mistone.  He and much of his crew managed to escape to shore and wreak havok upon the merchant caravans and travellers in the vicinity of Windjammer Bay following the encounter.  The courts are especially pleased at the mercy they have shown to his crew, having the prudence to bring no less than 20 pirates back alive and ready to stand trial.  Though the Captain himself fought to the bitter end, the realms may now breathe easier knowing that such a vile criminal no longer plagues the lands, and that his men may find just & fair administration under the law of Mistone.

The Cabin Boy known as "Squee" shall henceforth be offered into the guidance of Rofirien's clergy for rehabilitation so that he may atone for his transgressions against the law and better serve the community.

Just for Fun / Smooth Jazzy Metal & Hardcore Pop!
« on: July 25, 2011, 08:23:25 pm »
This guy Andy Rehfeldt specializes in remastering classic metal to smooth jazz and injecting death metal into pop songs.  Equally makes me laugh so hard I squirt beer through my nose and blows me away with his renditions!  Here are some of my favorites so far.

‪Ozzy Osbourne - Crazy Train (Smooth Jazz Version)‬‏ - YouTube
‪AC/DC-Back in Black(Funk Version)‬? - YouTube
‪Megadeth-Symphony of Destruction(Reggae Version)‬? - YouTube

‪Taylor Swift-You Belong With Me(Metal Version)‬? - YouTube
‪Kiss-Detroit Rock City(Reggae Version)‬? - YouTube

This guy is insane.  One thing I noticed is how awesome songs from their own style translate well into most others, while horrible singers getting the death metal cookie monster vocal treatment actually improve!  If Lady Gaga ever caught wind of these remixes, I have no doubt she'd take him on tour, lol!

I wonder if I can get him to redo the David the Gnome theme song in death metal?

Fixed Bugs / Great Forest Genesai: Spawn placement + Death Spells
« on: July 10, 2011, 11:55:55 am »
Description:  Was with Lareth and Czukay in the Great Forest and we decided to face the genesai.  Had both true seeing and protection vs. death spells up and got wiped out twice by their weird spells.  Kurn should have been immune to that.

Also they seemed to respawn directly next to the transition leaving the woods going back towards Hilm in an effort to trap us there.  Very bad, since that sort of spawn placement will catch people unprepared who happen to be entering that neck of the woods.  Spawns should NEVER be on top of transition points!

Location: Great Forest where the Genesai cast weird and hug their magic tree.

Verified: Preaccure was present.

Reproducable: Happened twice in a row before I logged off in frustration.

Ask A Gamemaster / Monstrous Submissions
« on: May 07, 2011, 11:01:47 am »
Back in May 2010, a hold was placed on monstrous submissions "temporarily, until the team catches up on submissions".  All of the submissions from May 2010 seem to have been completed.  Any ETA on bringing them back?  We're at the one year anniversary.

Monstrous submissions require little extra effort to approve than any other approval.  If anything, they require even less effort, since they can say that they "came from some tribe in the woods" instead of "he came from this city at this time, check the Lore, and this event was happening there, check the lore, and so and so was the queen of this land, check the lore, and he learned elven from his fathers friend, and dwarven from his mothers uncle...".  This is much more complex than say "Tog came from the woods, he learned the way of the warriors and talks with grunts, like most orcs do".

What I also find strange is that highly complicated races like Dark elves, each of which must detail their test, how they passed, their reasoning for leaving the underdark, how they cope with being topside in an alien world, etc. are fine, but a goblin who was raised in a tribe in the woods is more complex.  The suspension does not extend to wemics or fish elves, which are very monstrous and complex in their own right.

This is not to knock the submission/approval staff.  They have a tough and thankless job, very thankless.  The stress levels of dealing with all these hurdles can be frustrating.  But when regular submissions begin to take almost a month to approve, monstrous submissions have been denied for more than half a year, and we have massive blow-outs like what happened with Silvanne, and about 1/4 of the new players who submit a new character just wander off during the process and never return, then decidedly there is a problem.

We need more staff!  Maybe the time is right for a recruitment drive to bolster numbers on that front.  We need to lower the bar!  When I first got here, maybe 6-7 years ago, I admit the bar was too low.  Right around 2005-2006 it was raised to an appropriate level, I think.  But every year since then, we have demanded more and more from our players just to start playing.  It has gotten to the point where three grown men in their 30s have to meet 3x a week for over 3 weeks to brainstorm, rough draft, edit, etc. trying to find the secret codewords just to get a battle-rager approved in less than a month.  This is a family server, children are supposed to be able to play here.  How is a kid going to make a submission without tons of outside help?  Will children have the maturity to be told "no no no no" every time they want to try to play a new game?  We've had a grown man in his 30s snap and rage-quit over this system.

Take a look around at the server numbers.  It's basically the same 10-20 people at peek hours, with 0-4 on any time less than weekend quest prime time.  Now you might say that this is simply because the game is old, then how come other servers far less incredible than ours that shall remain nameless are hitting 40-50/64 consistently?  I will tell you why, because in order to play a game, it has become work.  In order to alleviate stress, we fret and agonize about nitpicking little things in the bios.  I write awesome bios, so I don't have to deal with most of thise stress.  Luckily I can get my non-monstrous, mundane characters approved in say, 2-3 weeks.  I still think we can do better than that.

I love this server.  It has built many fond memories over the course of over 7 years.  Please, we have to stop starving it of new players in the name of law and order and meticulous structure.  I know I make this post every year, and every year now the problem has gotten worse and worse.  I do not fault the current submission team, but rather I commend them for lasting as long as they have and working as hard as they do.  But in the end, it's equally unfair to them as it is to the players to have the bar set so high.

In short, we could use two things.  1) a staff recruitment drive among our tiny numbers to help speed things along. and 2) to lower this bar so that people less perfect and well-written than myself can pass the very 1st step.  We also need to lift the ban on monstrous races, because it isn't the problem that they are so complex, but rather WE are being too nitpicky with the mundane races as it is.  If every submission takes weeks and weeks, then a goblin or orc is not the problem, the system as it is working now is the source of the trouble.

I commend the team currently working hard to keep this awesome world running.  Just you're working too hard over a basic process that gets harder and harder.  The higher you set the bar, the more work you make for yourselves, and the harder your job will be.  I'd rather have lots of approvals green-lighted quicker and see you people in game, playing, than making an unpaid career doing paperwork 20 hours a week.  I would rather meet lots of new players new to RP in the world than a tiny handful of seasoned veterans that survived the overly difficult obstacle course it takes to get here.  We need more staff, we need more players.  More players mean more veterans that become staff, so don't turn away the players.

You incredible people work too hard as it is. ;)

Just for Fun / Who Else Made Layonara in Sims: Medieval yet?
« on: March 31, 2011, 07:57:43 pm »
King: Alarik Dunwalton
Bard: Farros Galdor
Knight: Czukay Zarkholme
Smith:Bjornigar Ironguts
Trader: Ogzughimmal

I see a pattern here...  Layo is so good I play it even when I'm playing other games!  Don't get me started on how many times I've played my Layo characters in Guild 2 also.  Every RPG or Simulator I play is infused with Layo names.  Most recently Brother Gloom was a martial artist master in Sims 3, breaking spacerocks for gems and using his Sim Fu to forge a criminal empire as a super villain.  Then he got bored, quit his job, took up painting and became a line cook at a bistro.  I would imagine his customer service skills degenerated into something like a cross between The Iron Shiek and the Soup Nazi.

I've been playing Medieval Simulators lately and this last one has me bloody addicted.  Of course I've logged at least a hundred hours each of time into all four version of The Guild 2, Majesty 2, Dawn of Discovery and Tropico 3.  I've come to the conclusion that watching taskbars brings me joy.  Mmmmm, percentage completeness rising. *drool*

Taskbars.

Development Journals and Discussion / Kurn's Clinic: Czukay
« on: March 31, 2011, 07:26:13 pm »
"Heh, that's it lad!  Yer gettin the hang of tha stick-n-twist thar!" Bellowed the blackbearded one-eye with rotty teeth as he watched Czukay's movements in the midst of battle.  Howling beastmen advanced upon the Dark One's blades, sides split and heads lopped in glistening anguish.  Still they charged.  Witless and wild were the Trolloc waves, marching to death on wicked blades.

Czukay's scimitar hit the bearman's torso powerfully to the unmistakable crack of bones breaking, ribs shattered by the sheer force of his blow.  Sensing the damage done, the mad one pushed his arms further to bring the edge across it's belly in a long slicing motion.  Bewildered, the beast reached down to find its entrails dangling and its eyes knew true horror.  And then all went black.

The two anti-heroes trudged on through the massacred, chopping and lopping and slicing and dicing whatever poor monster should stand in their way.  Beasts, Ettins, Fiends or Bandits, it mattered not.  Only the blade was true.  The one Sword Dojo, long ago the term coined by the late Cassius One-Eye (or "Sword Master Bastard" as Kurn would call him)

"Ye gotta BE the blade, ye buggart!  Every mornin' sharpen it, every time ye feed it, ye strengthen the blade and ye live fer it!  Ain't none of us gonna live forever, lad.  All of this! Flesh it rots, it withers and sloths off.  Or maybe some young whipper-snapper git lucky and take yer head fer a prize, it dun matter.  All that matters be the blade in your hand and feedin its legacy.  We just be the bearers of the ultimate truth, this blade in our hand and the inevitable death that it brings.  The blade will keep on swingin long after we're dead, and long after we be drinkin with Cassius in the battle beyond the blade will remain and continue its job.  It has but one... KILLIN!" Instructed the dwarf by the campfire.

"HOW ter weild it better be yer only concern.  All matters of wealth, vengeance, rage, fortune n glory, they all just icing on the cake.  Sometimes yer poor and hated, enemy at yer back and nowhere ter run, then who will save ye?  The GODS?!  HAR!  They're too busy playing Creature Cards with our souls ter give a hoot bout any of us.  No lad, that blade in yer hand be yer only savior.  It spreads a message of greatness for all unworthy to die by its bite and feed its flame.  Sacrifice these beasts and burdens of the land ter its glory, MAKE the people know its name fear it rightly, friend or foe!  Even those enemies you make that curse its name bring it power, use it!  Do it lad! And let EVERYBODY KNOW the GLORY of tha scimitar!"

And with that they began their training...

//Getting the ball rolling for Czukay and I to do a joint-CDT for his Weapon Master training.  Will be posting back and forth here as evidence of RP training.

General Discussion / Mithral Golem Loose in Dalanthar
« on: March 30, 2011, 08:00:49 pm »
Apparently somebody brought a Mithral Golem into Dalanthar which is now locked in an epic battle with an invulnerable shopkeep at the Thunder Peaks Transition.  Please do not lure monsters to town when spooked, people!  Going to need a clean-up on Aisle 3 before some unsuspecting character loses a soul strand trying to exit town.
