Dragon Retribution / Jennara eyes the dough balls
« on: October 09, 2016, 06:44:15 pm »

Jennara eyes the dough balls not-quite-suspiciously, then takes three. She starts walking back to her assigned area.

Start with the bad news, please. Let the news become increasingly better.

She eats one of the dough balls without comment or expression.

Dragon Retribution / Niccy. I heard you were here.
« on: October 09, 2016, 12:31:22 pm »

Niccy. I heard you were here.

Jennara had approached from the right, and now stands a human's-step away, hands clasped behind her back. She looks sad, despite the reunion with one so close. It is clear, too, that she is tired. One too many strands of her hair hang loose. Her posture, her shoulders, her eyelids almost droop, sagging rather than supporting, as if trying to lay themselves down but held up by a will.

My post is this way.

She turns to begin walking, but stops and looks back to Acacea.

I am glad, and sorry, you are here.

Just for Fun / These are printed in the beta
« on: September 24, 2016, 05:52:06 pm »

These are printed in the beta grey plastic. They're similar in toughness to other hard plastic minis. They don't seem fragile -- at least, not any more than any tiny plastic thing. If you look really close, you can see a contour map-like pattern from the 3D printing, but it's invisible from normal viewing distance and didn't interfere with the painting at all. Here's a super-close-up where you can see the contours on her torso and arm:

"I know! Dwarves are great!"

She leans in to speak softer.

"I was just letting you know! If someone else gets a whiff of it and sees you sitting down for a swig, they might accuse you of having an elf for a grandfather! Or worse -- both grandfathers! We can't let that happen!"

Iri offers Zig two bottles of something strong that might -- maybe, just barely, if the wind is very light and blows in just the right direction -- be detectable through the wax-sealed corks.

"This is good stuff! Drink it sitting down if you're feeling cowardly!"

Ancients Legacy / "Yeah! Look!"Iri sits down
« on: December 09, 2014, 10:54:27 pm »

"Yeah! Look!"

Iri sits down and takes out a little map from a scroll case, spreading it over a small patch of ground atop the hill, and then pointing at various places across it even if no one is nearby to look.

"See? There's Bydell! And the tower we saw, after we went around the lake! And I think we might be on this hill! There's a town that way..." She points northeast without looking. "And a cave system that way, which is probably the gold cave he was talking about! Neat!" She points north. "Farther east is just plains and a lake and a river and then a big ocean bay, with Fort of Kings on the coast! Across that, there's a canyon in the mountains and then Milala's house, if this cartographer isn't one to make geographical jokes!

"The other way..." She drags her finger back across the map... "is just a swamp, with a swampy cave! But the cave is farther south than Bydell Castle, so if he meant to go there, he turned too far north after going around the lake! I think he was guided! Was he Aragenite?

"Hey! If we quit trying to stumble upon something new here, where should we try to stumble upon something new next?"

« on: October 28, 2014, 03:36:19 pm »

When Arfur first banged in, Iri's axe was out in a flash and she was poised to strike. Realizing the disturbance was simply some sort of jester, she returned to scrubbing at some drying blood.

When he draws his rapiers, she points at him and gives a quick yell toward the bar.

"Hey! If there's a plan for attacking the monster, it should include that guy as some sort of distraction!"

Iri returns with Tori and begins helping with the clean-up, starting with the apple she threw aside earlier. She keeps an ear to the chatter and conversations, ready to move if any assistance is needed.

« on: October 26, 2014, 07:57:27 pm »

Iri makes a rough sketch of the wall on a small piece of paper, showing the constellations' and broken edge's locations, while Acacea talks. At the end, she gasps a bit.

"Oooo! I'm going to be a legend hunter! I have a great idea! I'll be back! No! Probably not! Unless you plan to dig for forty years, in which case I will certain return before that is very far along at all! But since I think you won't, then we'll meet somewhere else, probably! We'll let the birds gather us! I'll bring a story of a legend! Maybe! Anybody want to go for a walk?"

Rumour Has It / After disembarking, Iri makes
« on: October 25, 2014, 09:36:39 pm »

After disembarking, Iri makes her way through the busy dockside traffic, from the docks to a fruit stand to the Buckle. She walks in the door, notices people, and begins talking.

"Hey there! Have..."

The looks on people's faces and the abnormal nature of the tavern sounds do not take long to register. She tosses her half-eaten apple into a corner and shuts up as the training from her mercenary days kicks in. She readies her axe; watches for attackers; checks on injuries; looks for Tori and Andrew; and listens for any shouts for assistance, equipment, or supplies.

Obviously, a person who spends that much time adventuring in those places probably isn't the best person for a judge job.  However, that doesn't mean that because there might be extreme cases it should be disallowed simply because people think it might not be "fun."  Making decisions based on what is fair for everyone is one thing, and yes, some things that might be fun may be disallowed because they are not fair, because they are what is in line with the rules of the server, and what is appropriate.  Making a decision based on a personal opinion of what might or might not be fun no longer falls in the realm the above decision-making.

Ed didn't make the decision based on his personal opinion of fun.  He suggested it might not be very fun because of all the other reasons that it doesn't work and because it wouldn't offer much opportunity.

The only thing that I've suggested is that if the ooc reason for not allowing it is removed, give those people who want to attempt it a chance at achieving their goals.

There are lots of OOC reasons things are the way they are.  If OOC reasons are removed for one thing, why can they not be removed more generally?  I guarantee there are lots of people who wanted to do things that had OOC restrictions in the way, and that there still are.  Why is this reason okay to bend or ignore?

My disagreements with what Milt said are based mostly on world view.  They wouldn't add anything if discussed here.

I'm honestly having a little bit of trouble understanding why characters (PC or NPC) in the Rofireinite church seem to have such INCREDIBLY limited authority until they get into the absolute highest echelons of the command structure.

If a PC commits a crime, and a lawman PC witnesses it, why CAN'T the lawman A) subdue the criminal and submit a form or two to get a judgement, or B) just slag the guy in the name of Good and Righteousness, if the crime's bad enough? If the criminal gets away in EITHER case, the lawman can still put his paperwork through, and have a warrant issued for the criminal.

This whole discussion seems like you're taking the beat cops of Layonara, and taking away their guns, badges, and ticketbooks, and relegating them to... Er... Well, what is it they CAN do, again?

They can do what other citizens can do - make an arrest, as long as they then proceed directly to the proper authorities and take responsibility for their actions.

Rofireinites are not the beat cops; town guards are the beat cops.  Well, I guess town guards who are Rofireinite would be Rofireinites who are beat cops, but it's because they're guards, not because they're Rofireinite.  To get authority within a town or kingdom, the town or kingdom has to grant that authority to them.  If any kingdom has ever declared that all Rofireinites have authority to do anything beyond what any citizen could do, I've never been told.

Rofireinites won't intentionally "just slag" anyone because that's not in accordance with how the law and system work.  The guy wouldn't be getting a proper trial, at the very least.  It could happen accidentally, which should result in appropriate consequences.  If it happens "accidentally" *wink wink*, then that's really not a very good portrayal of a Rofireinite.

That's part of the frustration for some people, thinking they are starting a police-type character with some authority and finding out it's just like any other character, only with the restrictions of Lawfulness.

It may be fun.  There are lots of things that could be fun that aren't allowed.  Fun isn't really relevant.

Can I ask what the difference is between making weird excuses for not pursuing becoming a judge and making weird excuses for adventuring/questing or making weird excuses for not hearing a case involving a PC?

Can you explain how not hearing cases involving PCs would make sense IC without invoking weird and nonsensical reasons? Why is the PC different than the NPC from an IC perspective?  Should the PC be different?

I'm not sure "everyone else is doing it" is a particularly good reason to have localized WL positions, but I wouldn't really stand against it for that.  Maybe.  I think most WL positions (and PC positions in general) shouldn't be tied to specific locations.  It doesn't make a lot of sense for someone in an important, official position in a specific place to trot off around the world.  "Yes, I'm the judge for Hiso.  Why don't I spend a year or so ignoring that job while traveling and involving myself in odd goings-on in the forests of Mistone? And the year after, I will see Dregar." *shrug*  Jennara almost said no to the position of commander of the guard in Echo because she really can't be there often enough to give it the attention it deserves.  It was only because the Queen told her (paraphrasing) that the post has official power but is basically honorary that she accepted.  So she goes to check on things and make inspections, because she feels a duty to do so, but she knows the captain is really the commander and doesn't pretend it's otherwise.  It wouldn't make sense otherwise, especially since she's Rofireinite.  Non-localized positions are much more suitable and sensible for our characters, especially if the positions are supposed to be 'real' instead of honorary.

IF it were ever allowed, being a judge should be a WL-level achievement.  This matches with other PCs WL-level jurisdictions, such as Jennara as commander of the guard in Echo and Angela as a diet member in Lor.  The place of jurisdiction for such a WL should not be one of the established locations with established judges, like Vehl or Hlint.  In addition to already having judges (Reus and Kirus, for these examples), those places are too often used for trials and over-emphasize the position, and that looks way too much like favoritism if a PC fills the role.

Even then, at WL-level, you're left with making up really weird and nonsensical reasons why the character is out adventuring instead of staying in town being a judge.  Clearly, someone else is the judge and the PC just has an honorary title or is horribly derelict in her duty.  You can't be the guard captain in Haven if you're never in Haven, right?  And if a quest happens to end with a trial in the judge PCs jurisdiction and the PC was on the quest, how can he be impartial? Or, if the trial and quest are unrelated, how is the trial not just tacked on for the benefit of that one player?  If it were going to be participation only at the trial, not for the rest of the quest, that would be cool... as long as it were in proportion to how often other WL characters were asked to participate in their respective areas of expertise.  As often as we're asked, though, the judge would never hear a case (without invoking a CDQ), and I think that's part of why it wouldn't be very fun.

Ask A Gamemaster / Re: Evil/Lawful Rofireinite vs Good/Lawful Rofireinite
« on: October 26, 2011, 05:25:30 pm »
Regardless of where it started, the topic drifted.  Explaining how an Evil Rofireinite acts sorta requires an explanation of how Evil works with the dogma, and the dogma was written LN-LG, as Dezza said before.  So it makes ugly wrinkles and requires twisting and pushing and special cases.  Not all of the examples of the difference are horrible.  There were actually a few pretty good explanations.  All those with one guy as judge, jury, and executioner are right out, though.  That's not just my opinion; apologies to those who can't see Ed's very recent post saying so in the Rofi forum.  And a lot of stuff really comes down to defining alignment, too, which is always going to cause problems.

In the end, I think it needs structure.  When each DM can play it differently and each player can decide what is and isn't allowed, it's not really any different than, say, Mist's church, where there's a few ranks under a Chaotic god and church.  Mist just has different fluff on top, but it all plays out the same in the end.  I know it's a lot of work and I know there's a fine balance between too much structure and too little, but there are only five Lawful gods, and not even all of those really need extra structure.  It's not like the whole pantheon has to be rebuilt.  And it doesn't even have to be now.  Just stamp 'work in progress' on it and have it done up more clearly by MMO time.

Additionally, when there are too many struggles within a faith, it stops making sense that it is one church rather than several splinter churches.  People like to use the example of real life faiths having people with various opinions.  That's true, but you'll notice not all Christians are Catholic, for example, and they don't all look to the Pope for answers.  They may all agree on core issues, but other differences of opinion have pushed them apart.  Having a jumble of opinions under one, broad Chaotic church is far and away easier to explain than under a Lawful church.  The more deviation, the less unity there will be among people who believe there is actually a Right Way to do things that is externally prescribed by a deity.  "Heresy" is a word much more likely to come from the Lawful churches, not the Chaotic ones, y'know?  There are rules to follow and rites to observe; law and order must be obeyed; stay in line, march in step; all that good stuff.  Saying 'anything goes until you hear otherwise' is basically just throwing it all in the trash; it's Mist's church painted gold.

I don't have any desire to see Rofirein as LG.  I was just saying that two gods with the same alignment and with followers who do similar things can be different in interesting ways if you put some thought and detail into it.

I'm glad you feel better.  I don't think Leanthar was specific at all.  I mean, yeah, "this has to change," but that's not very enlightening.  If we're just going to roll over and lick boots because The Man speaks, we may as well give up.  All of us.  Things get better because people ask questions and point out incongruities.

This is one of those times where we have to accept what we have at face value, work with it and try to enjoy the game that's been provided for us.

At face value, it's not Evil.  See all the parts about aiding others and not making way for evil acts?  Face value.  But I don't care that there's Evil, only that no one will admit it was tacked on after the fact, instead trying to pretend it really does fit as if no one can read.

It's cool if you don't answer.  I understand walking away from the mess.

Ultimately I find a lawful good idea kinda boring as Toranites come close to it already though they likely accept NG as good comes before law (which is pretty much what your kinda going for, with slight differences); I'd much prefer impartiality and broadness in the Rofies so they stand apart from that faith more and have some division in their methods (LN primarily, LG and LE as extremeists). It has a sense of irony and I know Gulnyr will probably not like that (dont take offence, im not judging you, im just predicting your reaction from what ive read in your argument) cause it contradicts 'Order' but at the same time, mortals are very unlikely to ALL agree on something and do it the exact same way because we are all individuals and by definition of life, it is formed from chaos as are its physical laws.

One of the comments I remember about adding Evil and making a "change" is that Rofirein and Toran had been too much alike.  And that's debatable, I guess, but wasn't entirely untrue with the way Rofireinites had been played.  The prominent ones were LG.  What do you expect, y'know?  It has always seemed to me the difference is that Rofireinites will be more likely, in general, to stick to the law (whatever the law may be) and toss aside good or evil or whatever while Toranites would toss aside the law to uphold good.  That's an interesting distinction.  Both gods could be LG and it would still be interesting.

Way back a few years ago, when a change had to be made, no change was really made.  LE was tacked on and there was a bend toward making sure it was the law and order part that got the focus.  A little too much, sometimes, making the whole faith seem bland and one-dimensional and, oddly, too open and messy.  "Law, for law's sake, overtime, regardless of which law is before us. Any law will do!"  It's not that I don't understand something was already written and it took a long time and no one wanted to write it again.  It's not that I don't believe that a change could have been important.  It's that one step was taken instead of actually making a real change, and that left it broken and weird, and no one will just admit it.  Honestly, I'm glad it didn't change more.  I would have had to throw away Jennara, probably.

If I don't want to lose my character to overhauls, why am I pointing this stuff out?  Because I want things to succeed.  I want Layonara to make sense - without resorting to shoehorns and special cases - and to be cohesive so that it isn't ridiculed and laughed off the Internet when it goes big and extra-public.  I'm asking questions and poking at wrinkles because I care.  People who don't care will simply rip it open and leave it to bleed.

The point is that I agree with what you're saying.  It's just that it isn't actually written that way because Evil was added afterward. So it's not impartial and broad but leaning heavily toward Good.

Quote from: davidhoff
Then we say we are going to allow L/E and L/G Rofie characters.  Well then, the was I see it played out in game is that Rofie characters will define what they think "Divine Law" is based on their alignment.  A L/G Rofie (like Jennara) will go into an evil city, with evil laws (kill the first born to sacrafice to the king) and say "wait" this law is not in accordance with "Divine Law" as she sees Divine Law, and she would oppose that law.  However, a L/E Rofie (like Aesthir) will go into the same evil city, with evil laws, and say "nice", I like the way this place is run and this King is my kinda guy and will enforce the law.

Playing a Rofireinite is not recommended for people with heart conditions.  It's not nearly as orderly and Lawful as would be expected, which is horribly frustrating.  Defining the law per character is pretty much the textbook definition of Chaotic, y'know?

The Main point: The over arching goal imo is stability, law and order. The methods are up to the individuals.

I can't agree with the way this is worded. Did you mean it more specifically?  Something like "Methods within the restrictions of Divine Law are up to the individuals."

I'm actually confused by your response, Dorg.  It seems almost like you read me saying the opposite of what I did, when I actually agree with you completely.

Because PCs are different OOC, it creates too many problems IC.  I thought I said that, just from the inside looking out, but maybe it didn't come out right.  And that's on top of the administrative problems.  I don't care why Ed said what he said, y'know?  It doesn't matter because it fits well and prevents problems to just accept that no one can be judge, jury, and executioner.  Besides, that's how it has been until these recent posts.

Don't snap at me for not being a yes-man.  Help me.  [post=470141]Look[/post] how much like me you were.  Tell me what changed your mind from being so opposed.  Do you really believe that it makes sense now, even though nothing has changed about the write-up?  I would never think less of anyone for simply admitting LE had been tacked on without any significant work or changes done to make it work from the ground up.  Just say so.  "We know it's a horrible, forced thing, but that's what we've got until we switch over to mantras.  We're not going to fix it.  Sorry."  But to cram and force and twist and insist and pretend like it used to say something different - no, I'm not going to let you debase yourself or insult my intelligence.  Don't tell me who I am or what makes me happy.

In this context, I can completely understand why Ed might say that (PC) Knights of the Wyrm should not have the right to be "judge and jury".  Focusing on the PC side of things,  we all know that PCs having that sort of power over other PCs will cause issues, and my guess is that his answer was focused in that regard, even if the question may have been asked more broadly.

I don't think this is a blank spot.  I think, for the best RP experience, that NPCs and PCs not be treated differently, because they aren't different from an IC perspective.  If a crime is committed and Jennara is going to do something about it, it shouldn't matter that the criminal is a PC or NPC.  From her perspective there is no such thing; there are only people.

Thus, if she can't declare guilt and execute a sentence if Steel commits the crime, then she shouldn't be able to if Larry in Wayfare commits it, either.  She should always have to go through the system.  That keeps everything consistent and orderly.  I also think that is too much power for any one character (PC or NPC) in the first place, both from an IC and OOC perspective.

I don't think there's any reason to try to dissect what Ed said.  Just take it at face value as a statement that, at least for Rofireinites, no one person has the power of judge, jury, and executioner.  Is that bad?
