General Discussion / NWStory - A Useful Tool (YMMV)« on: July 12, 2009, 05:34:12 pm »
I came across this while browsing Sourceforge the other day, and I've employed Cleave to some success on my logs - Clobber is less useful, since I have the GLR.
Anyway, the link: NWStory. Basically, it formats and filters chat logs to facilitate things like CDT writing. Enjoy! 42
General Discussion / A Note for Those Involved in the Nothing Ventured Series« on: July 12, 2009, 04:32:50 am »
There will be handouts for this week's episode.
To prevent a repeat of the embarrassing performance on another quest of mine where someone (not naming any names) figured out the handouts on the previous night, these will be made available on the forums one half-hour before the quest begins. You may also wish to have graph paper available to you. Just sayin'. 43
General Discussion / Three Prisoners Puzzle & Solution« on: June 14, 2009, 06:12:05 pm »
For those who wanted the solution to the three prisoners puzzle from the quest today (or anyone else who might be interested):
Three Prisoners Puzzle ... and solution. So, the puzzle, in the context of the quest: Three prisoners are being held for questioning by a Rofireinite court. They are:
The following facts are known:
So. There's the puzzle. Those who want to try to work it out on their own, don't scroll down. * * * * Hint: Hypothetical questions can help a lot here. * * * * Hint the second: Particularly of the form "If I were to ask you Q, would you say X?" * * * * Solution Step One: Choose any one of the prisoners (we'll say Andrei, who will hereafter go by "A"), and ask the following question: "If I were to ask you 'Are you the one whose answers are true or false at random?', right now, would you say 'Ja.'?" If A says "Ja", they're the Random one. If they say "Da", they're either the liar or the truthteller. How this works: Because the Random prisoner is either lying or telling the truth (and not simply answering at random) there's actually information here. The key is to break it down into cases. The first two cases to break down are whether A is Random, or Not Random. Assuming A is Random:
Step 2(a):So, if A answers "Ja", we know he's the random one. We then choose one of B or C and ask them "If I were to ask you 'Are you the truthteller?', would you say 'Ja'?" If they answer "Ja", they're the truthteller. If "Da", they're the liar. How this works: As above, cases are the key, but this one is much simpler. Assume our questionee is the truthteller.
Step 2(b): A isn't Random, so the next step is to determine whether he's the truthteller or the liar. We borrow the logic from 2(a), and we've got him. Step 3: This is only required if A is the liar. We then know that one of B and C is Random, and one is our perp. The remaining question, then, posed to A, would be "If I were to ask you 'Is B the prisoner who answers randomly?', would you say 'Ja.'?" If B is Random, then A will answer "Ja", and C is our perp. If not, "Da", and B gets thrown in jail. How this works: See step 2(a). Hope this got you all thinking; if anyone has any questions or clarification needed, post it here. :) 44

General Discussion / Nothing Ventured - All Party Members Please Read!« on: March 14, 2009, 01:09:44 pm »Nothing Ventured Quest Series Seems there was a bit (well, a LOT) of confusion regarding the change to Daylight Savings Time, and the quest today. I will continue to post links to the World Clock on each of my quest entries, to try and alleviate this confusion. However, today's quest will have to be postponed. Again. *weeps* Next weekend, I will be away from from home, and therefore unable to run it, so it will be the subsequent weekend... *twitches* Six... weeks... after the last episode. To be absolutely clear, the quest will begin at this time. Please, please RSVP to this thread. Whether you can make it or not, let me know. It will let me know whether a retcon will be necessary to round out the party again. At this point, we will assume that Marcus used his ring and abandoned the rest of you. 46

General Discussion / LORE Firefox Search Plugin« on: February 11, 2009, 05:08:32 am »
Something for those of you who use Firefox - an extension to the search box in the toolbar that allows you to search the Layonara Online Reference Encyclopedia without even having to navigate to the site!
Just unzip the attached file into (if you installed Firefox into its default location) C:\\Program Files\\Mozilla Firefox\\searchplugins, and restart Firefox, and a LORE searchbox will have been added to the dropdown search engine list. (A boon to character approvers, character submitters, and anyone who needs a handy LORE reference during a quest!) 48

... by any other name, I'm still Ouroboros.
Although I'm coming along to the idea a little later than others, this thread will serve as a central posting location for information about all of my quests. This thread will replace the prior joint thread with Osxmallard - any future team-ups will be announced here, rather than spawning a thread all their own! Finally, for newcomers, you can link from here to my GM thread to get a sense of who I am before you sign up for one of my quests. Cheers! 52
NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / Call Lightning - Underground?« on: September 02, 2008, 12:29:47 am »
LORE: Call Lightning
As much as this spell has occasionally saved my bacon, it has also occasionally fried my bacon - and in either case, astonishes me when it occurs indoors, or worse below ground. Basically, what I'm suggesting is that Code: [Select]
wrap the spell, to prevent lightning from striking a mile underground. As much as the spell is powerful, it makes no sense to call lightning from the sky when the sky is a rock, stone, or wood ceiling 10 feet overhead. And to the argument that a thatched-roof cottage might not stop a lightning bolt, I say, true - but it's unlikely the inhabitants will look kindly on you. I'm just suggesting that the spell work as its LORE page suggests: Quote from: LORE

// This is a long-overdue thread promised to those who were on last Thursday's quest.
Any investigation of the grounds in which you wish to engage, questioning of guards or guests, or other investigation, should be posted here, in-character. If you want a more involved conversation with an individual, post here indicating your character's desire to find them and talk to them, and then find me on IRC or in-game in Tells to carry out the conversation itself. This thread is in-character - though it can be written in third-person if you wish, to facilitate the clarification of actions. Have at it! /// 57

General Discussion / Locked Out!« on: June 06, 2008, 01:52:08 am »
I am so sorry to everyone who signed up for my quest - here are the trials and tribulations of the past few hours.
I left work early, at 6:30, to allow plenty of time for setup. I arrived at the apartment at about 7, to discover (to my chagrin) that I had left my keys in the apartment when I left this morning. Unfortunately, Carillon is not here right now, so I couldn't buzz up to be let in. No problem, thought I, I'll just ring the managers. They're always in. As it turned out, this assumption was in error. Earlier this afternoon, it appears that my landlady won a dinner cruise for her husband and herself. So, at 6 PM, they had left the building. Fortunately for me, they'd keyed the buzzer to their cell phone, so despite a poor connection, they recognized my voice and let me into the building proper. This, however, did not get me into the apartment, nor to the computer at which I now sit. I then proceeded to while away the intervening four hours reading magazines left by the laundry room, composing little ditties for my bard and cursing the luck that allowed all these events to coincide with the delightfully involved little quest I had planned for tonight. So. That's why I was a no-show. Although the timing developed by my Rumours thread will now have to be stretched, slightly, I am relocating this quest to Saturday, same time, so as not to step on OsxMallard's toes with his fun-sounding Beetle Quest. Once again, I apologize to those who signed up for my quest, and to Dorg, who doubtless loaded up Quest for me. I ask your forbearance, and hope most (or all) who signed up for Thursday are equitable with the move. Regards, Darkstorme |
