NWN Ideas, Suggestions, Requests / And in threes...
« on: October 25, 2009, 02:10:32 pm »
In the perceived ascending order of usefulness...

1. Level 40 Epic.

On a kind of side-step, a couple of Dezza's things reminded me that I was actually talking with someone recently about the loss of the level 30 epic. Not so much its requirement to pass beyond it, but just that there was that "break." The old requirements, while stringent and restrictive in their way, did kind of add a lot at the same time - yes, you had to do something crazy to get past 20 in the first place, but also, and more interestingly to me, your story didn't just stop there. You had one at 20, and that was a beginning. At 30 you continued. There was another at 40, wasn't there? I can't recall. But there definitely a progression. I don't know if there should be another wall or not, but there was the feeling of level 30 being another big thing. Has anyone considered having a level 40 epic? Think about it - it takes you 20 pre-epic levels to get to "WL" in general. What happens after 20 more actually epic levels? heh. What have you spent all your time on? Make it twice as difficult and you either rule the world or go out with a bang, eh? Eh...

Anyway, I don't think WLs should be given more XP, regardless of quests, but at the moment their quests kind of come off very much as a final thing. You got one shot to complete a goal and then you are done and left to stagnate. It is greedy to try to do anything else story-involved a RL year later, you had your turn. In a lot of ways it seems like development stops instead of begins, and I think somewhere the lack of ability to progress in that fashion kinda sucked. What exactly are your Angelas and Alanthas and Storolds and so on doing at level 40? The next time they have stupid crazy idea to try, I say let 'em. Let it near kill them and break all ties and make new ones and whatnot, but let 'em. Make it worth the 20 epic levels they put in ;)

2. 1 hour to CDQs per 5 levels after 20.

You don't need three WL quests, but with the current CDQ reqs limited to 6 hours every 2 months... it's hard to think of things that fit within the scope of the characters after x level, but can be squashed into two three hour sessions. That isn't even limited to WLs but epic characters in general - it doesn't matter if you've had a WL quest, if you're out killing Essrantor for fun, it will be hard for you to have a meaningful cdq that's aimed for your level range in that amount of time. It can be done and I've seen it done, but still - hard, for both GM and player. Maybe you could even just add an hour for every 5 levels after 20 or something - at 40 you'd cap at 10. Is that unfair?

(That's not snide, I'm curious if it seems unfair, you know? Do level ten characters feel burned by that, or look forward to further development as they continue?)

This was originally in my response to that thread since that's where the other was, but it might be better off here.

3. Use LORE commentary as mini-DM profiles.

Another thing is regarding the both the use of WLs and non-WLs that have gained influence in x area on quests. Profiles can get pretty weighty and still not have things of interest in them - a long time ago I wanted to have a GM setup on LORE where they could see what they needed to see of a character in a glance. With the GM commentary added, it occurred to me to use it as a mini-profile.

You look at your GM event calendar - 6 yes, 18 maybe, 3 no. Looking to most likely characters of those yes, by using LORE you can browse their stats, last used gear, level, crafts, chance of permadeath, and if GMs left quicknotes on LORE, snips of anything that might be immediately relevant.

"Banned from Voltrex."
"+10 Gather Info and Lore when in x region."
"Favored knight of the Queen of Trelania."
"Hero of Hurix"
"Dragoncalled"
"Cannot tap the Al'Noth until date 20/5/2010"

And so on. By keeping them very short one-liners, you can add more of them and see more of them at a glance. If any of those one-liners prove immediately relevant to your quest, you can choose or choose not to go look at where there is more information. In some cases you might need it, but in some cases all the important bit is summed up in a sentence.

It could be that LORE commentary might need to be wiggled a little, but it seemed like having snapshots of relevant information immediately available to GMs just by clicking a stat profile would really help them not have to wade as much just looking to see IF there is anything they need to know.

Layonara Server / Update coming soon! New HAK required
« on: September 20, 2009, 11:15:24 pm »
Hello all.

Sometime in the next few days (I hope) there will be an update to the modules, and some of the changes require an updated "control" HAK file.  You can download it now and unpack it into your "hak" folder, so that you're prepared when the update comes online.

The download link is:  http://nwn.layonara.com/downloads/files/layo_controlv3r8.rar

Enjoy!

General Discussion / For My 31st Birthday
« on: August 02, 2009, 01:45:27 pm »
I'm going to cut the cord for helping develop the NWN server further.

So, with a fresh new posting style, I'm going to keep this short and sweet.

I've had a brilliant time with a great number of you, even the ones I've gotten really into it with.  I always thought I'd make a farewell post with the list of everything I built here, because it would feel like some sort of reminder to everyone.  It's a bit silly though, as for years and years I've tried to legitimize my efforts to this community, and overly so.  I think it stems back to my embarrassing beginnings here... but I'm no pyschologist heh.  I enjoyed building most everything I built, and I'm very proud of how V3 turned out.  That's enough for me this time.

I will always support the MMO team's efforts, and I look forward to the new game.

There are a lot of reasons for leaving, and I'd explain them... but the folks I'd really want to understand probably already get it.

So best of luck, I'll still be around now and then, in game and on the forums, and Dorg, I'll try not to troll your posts on balance too much.

And with one last challenge... the toolset is easy to learn.  It just takes time if you're going to make something come out right.  Time learning all of the placeables and tile options so you know the brushes and colors to use.  But it's not technically hard.  I challenge one of you, anyone, to step it up and legitimize all of your scrutinizing comments on the way the server should or could be.  Make 10 areas to a new theme, send them to Dorg.  Someone, anyone, impress Layonara with something new for others to enjoy.  Even if you know it's ending someday, soon or not so soon, who knows... build it because you care for the server today.  Take up the torch, as I know there are some people who have wanted to prove me wrong on some things - and there's no bigger crux to it then this.  Everything else is just forum posts.

Take care all.

Just for Fun / Catching up with Leanthar
« on: July 30, 2009, 05:46:29 pm »
Yeah OK, I didn't think I'd ever actually see this number when I started here almost 5 years ago, but here it is.

10,000 posts...

I'd try to think of something monumental, significant or ground-breaking to commemorate the moment.  Sadly, my creativity seems to be lacking today, and when creativity lacks, of course, I turn to simple aggression.  So here it is...

1892 posts to go. *squints sternly at Leanthar* I'm coming for you, buddy!

Rumour Has It / Super-Octogenarian Retires!
« on: July 23, 2009, 10:50:44 pm »
Let it be known that Earl Frogstomper, Red Ninja extraordinaire and tough old miserly sod is finally announcing his retirement from the adventuring/mercenary tradition.  At now quickly approaching his 89th birthday, he has this to say.  "Man, it's been a wild ride, more fun than I ever expected.  But with mah wife dead, my kids in thar 60s, my kid's kids in thar late 30s and THAR kids just about ready ter take up the trade and find wives of thar own, ah know ol father time comin for meh.  Gonna trade in all mah gear and profits and pay off em back-taxes on tha family ranch in Brech, so we all keep with the brewin and pipeweed trade.  Ter all meh friends out thar, please feel free ter drop by and give meh ah holler.  Ah still got mebbe ah decade left in meh, and my family is yer family.  We got the whiskey brewin and the pipes lit up fer ye!"

His will indicates the entirety of his wealth and items will be going towards his family members, and for paying off old debts.  He shall now be taking up "an honest job" brewing for the dwarves of Brech and farming hops & pipeweed in Prunilla's way.  With over 40 able bodied grandchildren and great grandchildren to take up the chores, his retirement years shall be spent most productively, seeing to it that the "XXX Whooparse Ninja Brew" label finds its way across the lands.  And so, one of Layonara's most eclectic and energetic adventurers finds his retirement years in comfort, with over half of his soul strands still intact.  If only we could all be so lucky!

//been fun, but playing a human past 90 entails heart attacks, hernias and adult diapers.  Would rather go out on a strong point than see him whither down into feebleness.  Please feel free to use him as an NPC in Brech, all ye GMs.  And for any players interested in playing a descendant, let me know.  Likely when the MMORPG comes out, I'll be playing his great-great-grandson, Earl Jr!

Rumour Has It / Adventure
« on: June 29, 2009, 01:47:02 pm »
Flyers in a few places.

Let's go do something!

Join me in Dalanthar and we will seek high adventure.  Depending on the numbers: we can romp through the Ore Hills and Sinister.  Blaze into the depths of the Rift. Or go back to my place for games of chess and a bath.  So come one, come many... and bring a cute friend.

~Razeriem

//Lets try this at 7 PM EST.  Going to play around with a few times and levels and see if there is interest in any regular weekly groups.  Thanks.

General Discussion / Joining the rank and file :)
« on: June 25, 2009, 09:28:00 am »
Hi everybody!

This is the post to inform I am stepping down as GM. I'm not disappearing from Layo, in fact I hope, RL and remaining DTs permitting, to step up my involvement with Ark as an active and roleplay-enhancing World Leader.

About two years ago I applied for a GM position in order to enhance people's Layo experience, primarily in the AEST timeslot given poor old Dezza was shouldering a lot of that burden on his lonesome.

The main goal of my quests has always been to get players to really think long and hard about their characters. To put roleplay flesh on their mechanics bones. To make players really think about what their characters would do in a given situation, a given moral dilemma. To put them in a place, not always comfortable, not always where they want to be and then see what they would do and where they go. Often my quests have a simple enough premise but I tried to have them involve something that had folks exploring the depths of their character's psyche.

As I write this, I remember one of my quests, early on, that had people magicked into behaving in a manner the polar opposite to their 'normal' sex, class and alignment. This stands out in my memory as a very 'typical me' quest. Hopefully fun. A touch of madness. A strange situation. Minimal set-up ;) A quest that (hopefully) by getting you to do something the opposite of what was normal, made you think more deeply about what was normal. By playing Lawful Evil for an evening, it made you think about what it really meant to be Chaotic Good the other 364 nights of the year.

Anyways, hopefully after two years there are some players who have a better picture of their characters as a result of my quests.

As to why I am resigning, no deep and dark discontent or disparaging remarks against any individual or the GM team as a whole to be found here! Of course there are decisions made which, as an individual, one might not 100% agree. Directions taken that might not have been the direction I would have taken were it my sandbox. Little niggles here and there etc yada yada but I can tell you there are no light decisions ever made by the GM team. No personal grudges. No favourites. No bias. Just a bunch of people that really do strive to provide the best server to be found.

Anyways, see you in game!

Rumour Has It / Children's delight in Vehl
« on: June 18, 2009, 03:54:46 am »
*The streets of Fort Vehl today could be likened to a carnival, with every child a winner.

Children of all shapes and sizes, all backgrounds and all races were treated to a yummy bag of licorice provided free of charge by the Vault Banking Institution. The bank's principal, Arkolio Salvorre, present throughout was happy to be quoted, exclaiming with a broad smile,

"I believe that children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way. Give them all the licorice they can fit inside."*

Just for Fun / A found lullibye {Squishy the Beholder}
« on: May 28, 2009, 01:43:45 am »
As the years pass, remnants of the presumed deceased bards' journal occasionally surface in the Aragenite temples. One such collection of pages seems to be a lullaby.

Squishy the beholder
Lived along the sea
And frolicked in the Mist Filled Air
In a land of silver kings.

Little Sarun-Elly
Well she loved that Squishy lots
And brought him gifts of little paints
To make him up with polka dots!

Squishy the beholder
Lived along the sea
And frolicked in the Mist Filled Air
In a land of silver kings.

Squishy the beholder
Lived along the sea
And frolicked in the Mist Filled Air
In a land of silver kings.

Together they would travel
Upon the lim lim's back
With wings held high
Like a dragonfly
Along the Silver Track

And noble elves and wizards
would all bow when they came
And offer gifts of toys and snacks
and laugh at their little games!

Squishy the beholder
Lived along the sea
And frolicked in the Mist Filled Air
In a land of silver kings.

Squishy the beholder
Lived along the sea
And frolicked in the Mist Filled Air
In a land of silver kings.

Beholders live for ever
But not so little girls
And so eye stalks and many eyes
Make room for other toils.

One grey night it happened
And Saru came no more
And Squishy the beholder
He ceased to go explore

His eyestalks bent in sorrow
Tears they fell like rain
Squishy no longer went to play
Along the Silver Lane

Without his life long friend
Squishy could not be brave
So Squishy the beholder
Slipped back into his cave

Squishy the beholder
Lived along the sea
And frolicked in the Mist Filled Air
In a land of silver kings.

Squishy the beholder
Lived along the sea
And frolicked in the Mist Filled Air
In a land of silver kings.

General Discussion / Having Fun?
« on: May 16, 2009, 09:51:24 pm »
I hope everyone is having fun exploring and adventuring together with friends this weekend. One of the things I hope to see from this weekend is that players (you) find new friends to adventure with in Layonara, or that some players return to regain the enjoyment of the world. I challenge each of you to go find new players or encourage players to return and enjoy the world. Layonara is built for you, the player/gamer--something we never forget.

We really do have a fantastic GM team that dedicates a whole heck of a lot of time (for 7!! years now folks) to the community.

Not to mention all of the "lowly" programmers and module builders that dedicate their time to grow the world and community *ducks for cover behind the content team....then realizes his mistake...* :)  I really do enjoy dogging on them the very few times I get the chance!!

Hope all are having a good time.

Rumour Has It / In Memorial of Shiff Dragonheart
« on: July 21, 2008, 06:35:17 pm »
Word goes out quietly and with invitations to friends of the Dragonhearts of a small memorial service being held in Haven.  Shiff's remains will be interred on the hillside overlooking the town and the family Shiff worked so hard to protect during his life.  Those wishing to remember Shiff are invited to do so.

Shiff's armor and helm have been placed in a stone casket set in the ground, arranged in a manner recalling how they were worn in life.  Laying the length of the armor is Shiff's greatsword.  The arms and gauntlets of the armor have been placed on the hilt of the weapon, as if Shiff were holding the sword against his chest.

Val stands off to one side of the casket, supported on her left by her father.  Standing at the head of the casket is thirteen-year-old Drakus, feeling both important and scared.  He is holding an urn containing the ashes of his father, Shiff.  Val, refusing to cry, stands quietly, occassionally turning to speak quietly with her father.

After waiting a short while for those in attendance to settle, Val steps forward slightly to speak.  Her voice, none too pleasant to begin with, is noticeably rougher than usual, but is still strong and she is clearly heard.

"I'm not much for ceremonies, but I have a few words I'd like to say.  Shiff Dragonheart was a good man.  He was a strong man, a dependable man, a firm man, one who could be depended on, a loving man, and a protector.  He was a man who I always knew would support me.  Shiff was strong willed, unyielding in the face of adversity, and a man who worked tirelessly to accomplish good."

Looking upwards, Val continues: "Shiff, we are proud of you, and will remember you always.  As you kept us safe, we will keep your memory safe."

She takes on a slightly more formal tone:
"Under the wide and starry sky,
Dig the grave and let me lie.
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will!

This be the verse you grave for me:
Here he lies where he longed to be;
Home is the sailor, home from the sea,
And the hunter home from the hill.
"
As she speaks the verses, her voice gets rougher and breaks several times on the last few lines.  Clearly barely able to contain her emotions, she says in a voice so quiet, even those in the front can barely hear her. "Shiff... you're finally home."

She steps back to her father, and he puts a comforting arm around her.  After a bit, when it seems clear she is too distraught to continue, her father moves towards Drakus, but Val reaches out a hand and stops him, quietly murmuring "I'll do it."  She reverently takes the urn from Drakus, setting it carefully under the breast of Shiff's armor.  The family then steps back, allowing others the opportunity to pay their last respects to Shiff Dragonheart.

Rumour Has It / The old dwarf finally falls for good
« on: June 22, 2008, 11:53:49 am »
He needed exercise..his tired legs, bad knees, and slightly stooped back felt good today.  The axe was sharp but the trip was short.  He became surrounded by bandits because tactical position was broken.  Foolish?  Perhaps, but that is neither here nor there now.

The aged dwarf Dorax Windsmith finally gave in completely to the Soul Mother and now his soul prays from beyond this plane for Vorax to escort him into the Halls so that his deeds may be remembered.  A Blood War Veteran and friend to so many who have gone before him.  Certainly not the brightest, but a good dwarf none-the-less.  Rest in peace.

Rumour Has It / Along the docks of Fort of Kings
« on: April 27, 2008, 10:20:24 pm »
"Old Man Cubbins says it's a dragon breathing smoke"

"...Well I heard it's a million billion bats, and not a cloud at all"

"You're both wrong, it's actually..."

While the Erilynian children argued about matter they all knew was unknowable, one boy was quiet. Finally, he spoke up. "You're all wrong. I know, I heard some people talking at the inn." The group of urchins silenced, turning to hear what their normally quiet compatriot could offer. "There was an elf, she was dressed in a shiny black robe, and she was meeting with some people who were wearing swords and armor. I hid under the table by them and listened... she said she and some others people went there, she saw what was in the mountains, she saw what was making the cloud. And I know she was telling the truth, 'cuz she gave the people with armor maps she drew to the Mountains of Madness"

The other children gave him expectant looks. "Well?" One demanded, "What did she say she saw?

The boy flushed with the excitement of being the center of attention, a position he obviously was not used to. "She said she saw..." he paused dramatically "She said she saw Milara." The boy smiled at their looks of incredulity, and continued, trying to get it all out before somebody interrupted  him. "And there was some woman named Say-Leen or something, she said it was somebody's sister, a really important person. And a grey floaty thing that she didn't know what it was. She said there was a portal there, that some people let Lumbers out of... and that's what's making the cloud, the Lumbers live in a shadow place and the cloud is the shadow that got leaked out." He finished, trying to sound as though he actually knew what that meant and that he was actually sure that's what the elf said.

One of the girls snorted. "You're probably just making all of this up... I like Brandon's idea better."

The young Erilynian smiled, for the best surprise was to come. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a piece of vellum, a veritable treasure from these urchins' perspective, and carefully unrolled it.  "I... I think they knew I was there the whole time. One of the guys with a sword asked the elf to draw an extra map, and then after she had finished he reached down and gave it to me." He held the map  up where they could see it, but not get their fingers on his prize.

"What do the words on it say?" Another boy asked.

"How should I know? I can't read any more than you can," the boy replied.

They began arguing about whether the map was real or not, and continued until the sun went down and it was too dark to try and make out anything on the map, and the boy carefully rolled it up with enough care to rival any curator or archivist, and tucked it away....

General Discussion / Wanted to Thank You all

Well when I started here, I knew nothing of the rp world.  I read everything slow and I typed even slower.  As time grew on, I like to belive I grew as an person and a player.

I was like this is to cool.  I can not belive this world and these people.  The GM's were great.  Heck I even remeber my first 3 day banned and only (I was a bad boy that did not read the rules and leveled in something I should not of) by L himself.  I could go on forevery about the Quest's.  The time it takes for the gm's, mind blowing.  The RP great, but I do like a bit of bashing.  Heck after all I am a fighter/cleric/undead slayer.

I can tell you this, I have learned to read faster and type faster with fewer mistakes.  My spelling has gotten a lot better, now I need to work on my grammer *belly laugh*.

I want to thank everyone here for everything it.  I can not wait to see the next verison.  I am sure it will be just as great.  I guess I just wanted to get this off my chest.

General Discussion / Thank you!
« on: March 12, 2008, 08:57:32 am »
I want to take a moment to thank all of the people involved in the last three updates over the past two weeks. There has been many long hours (I would be willing to bet at least a thousand) put in to these updates and it is clear their love for the world and community is what keeps them working on updates. The past six months have been extremlly packed with RL happenings, holidays, family issues, and the list goes on and yet these individuals continue to produce updates for the community.

There can not be enough thanks for them but I just want to make sure everybody understands that their selflessness is what continues to make the world a great gaming place that is enjoyed by many around the world.

 In no special order:
Gulnyr, muaddib, Chongo, Eorendil, Darkstorme, Weeblie, Script Wrecked, and Dorganth.

 Thank you and good job!!

I also want to thank everybody on the GM Team, now and in the past. I firmly believe that a major part of what makes Layonara so special is the GM Team and all of the events they run and all of the difficult work they do behind the scenes (online and off) in order to ensure that Layonara remains a RP server at heart. Your efforts do not go unnoticed and it is your attention to the spirit of the server which is what continues to make Layonara loved by many.

Thanks folks, to each and every one of you!

And of course, thank you to the community! What a great RP community.

 You rock!

Soon the canyons of isles once only seen on the horizon will close in around you, the steady breeze from a channeled and ancient wind pressing against your face.

And soon, you'll find why no ships sailed there before...

As the chittering of cunning foes echoes in the high cliffed forests around you...

And only passing moments of peace are found to admire what you've naught seen before.

Soon old enemies will take new forms.

And perhaps a few new tricks they'll have learned just like you...

You'll seek out their new domains with much wonder..

And perhaps... you will learn again to run...

And then run faster...

And yet faster....

Until you can no longer run.

I'll see you all in there soon enough.  Look for Dorg's big announcement!  Look for the new spells bursting in the air around you, the new monsters thundering towards you, the flicker of an unseen relic on the ground, and ever the expanding horizon of new lands.

:)Be careful out there folks.:o
